Worst Characters Ever

Recently reading the mirrors edge topic Cal called the heroine on of the most interesting charecters he's seen in years, and I disagreed since other than her profession, a "runner", and the fact that she's Asian and has a tattoo we know nothing about her. Which reminded me of an even more generic charecter...

Honestly the most generic charecter ever, his biography...

He's a physicist with a dark past.

What the hell is that! I played the entire game and there was never even any hint about what his "dark past" might have been other than he might be actually working for a diffrent organization in addition to working on a time machine.

So what's the worst charecter you've ever seen, and why?

Game protagonists don't need to be that well defined. Indeed, sometimes it's actively harmful to have them well defined.

Even in games like Mass Effect in which story is a large part of the experience, you choose a general background, and that's only sketchily filled in to allow you to mentally construct the character your playing.

People often forget that GAMES ARE NOT MOVIES. They have different requirements than cinema, even if a large part of the lexicon that games use to communicate their stories are stolen wholesale from cinema. You could have the most "generic" characters ever and still produce a wonderful game (see: Gears of War).

It's because gaming is not primarilly a story telling medium, Pacman, Space Invaders, Donkey Kong and so forth all did fine without stories but nowadays they're thought of as necessity and as a selling point instead of that actually being the gameplay.

Actually, Donkey Kong was arguably the first game to include the rudiments of a story into games. It's a very simple story, granted. And if you cared to, you could make a case that the little interludes in Pac Man were possibly actually the first appearance of any kind of narrative.

Story counts in games. But it's not the same kind of storytelling.

Crackdown being the exception then, lacking story but having great, fun gameplay.
