Battlefield 4 was a mess on console at launch with the constant crashing.

Whilst ET was a terrible game didn't it technically have a great launch? It flew off the shelves for Christmas. It also wasn't a bug ridden mess, it actually functioned, which is a miracle given the development time, it's just that what was there was crap even though it worked right.

It was post launch that it imploded.

Driveclub is what comes to mind immediately. So bad Sony offloaded the studio, even the fact it turned into the best arcade racer ever made couldn't save them.

SimCity. Online-only and didn't provide the infrastructure to cope with the demand. So few people could get into the game and those that could only had positive impressions because they could play so little that they weren't able to see the fatal flaws that pop up after a few hours. So demand stayed high, the servers stayed down and eventually people slowly realised it was an absolute disaster even when it worked

In recent history it would be No Man’s Sky.

You do have to wonder how much better No Man Sky would have sold if it had been delayed and released in the state it is now. The difference in response would have been huge.

How could I forget this? A strawberry floating mess for months and months but Photek somehow had a magic copy that worked perfectly.

Didn't it sell really well?

I think it depends on the context you look at it. As an indie it sold extremely well, but then it did have a big push and a lot of support from Sony. If it had landed to a positive reception I think it could have done huge numbers.

It may have had a pants launch but it turned into one of the greatest driving games of all time and for me is still the best multiplayer driving game ever.

I can't agree with this. Yes the multiplayer had big problems, but the core game was still excellent.

Didn't Mass Effect Andromeda have a pretty appalling launch? Never played it but remember the reception was quite vocal.

I can't think of Driv3r without appending -gate to the end of it.

Yeh the driveclub thing was blown out of proportion  there was a solid fun game there even with the multiplayer racing and mini challenges disabled. I’ve never played a game where hotlapping was so addicted (okay just one my lap and that’s it...)

It’s a shame it’s up there with the worst launches ever because it overtook Forza Horizon 1 as my fav arcade racer

Nothing is going to really top ET, but my vote goes to FFXIV for almost bankrupting Squenix and killing one of the biggest names in the industry. Bonus points for the gambit they pulled turning it into the success it became.

People were calling it vaporware in the months before launch, and folks were getting very, very impatient for it. Delaying until 2018 would've destroyed the hype and it would've fizzled at launch.

The problems began when they decided to announce the game. Had they left it a couple of years and secretly delayed it to 2018, things would've gone very differently. But I suspect Sony wanted results sooner than later, and Hello Games needed the money they were offering. Or something.

No mentions of Battlefront II yet? An absolute mess of micro-transaction and pay-to-win progression scandals, miserable sales and a rapidly dwindling dev team as EA just gave up almost as soon as the game came out.

Ah yes, MCC launched with a ton of problems but after several patches they just barely got mp working and not perfectly by any means, constantly separating fireteams after matches.

The ridiculous thing was people in this forum making out that I was lying about playing mp games and white knighting it despite posting literally hours of footage of me playing mp and I streamed most of it providing links. I realised far too late though, that despite having evidence to the contrary (which is online), I was still somehow lying because grcade’s gonna grcade but that’s on me, I was way too naive and reactive and I’ve tried to change as a result.
