It won all these awards and plaudits and yet I found it one of the worst games I have ever played.

I'm interested in seeing more about this. Outer Wilds (I don't think there's a 'The' in the title!) is coming to Switch this year I believe, and it's a game I'm conflicted on whether I should try. It apparently does a lot of what I love regarding exploration and discovery, but I also hate time loops. So I'd be keen to read an expanded version of your utter apathy/distaste, because all I've read so far is praise for it.

I think I’d have enjoyed Outer Wilds a lot more if not for the time loop, explore for however long and then bang, back to the beginning :fp: The actual idea of the game is neat in itself.

I found it to be largely meandering. I went off into space in a quite realistic space craft and flew towards an interesting looking planet surrounded by storms. I flew into one for a laugh and ended up lost on the surface unable to get back to my ship.

The time loop reset and off into space I went again without a clue what to do beyond a radio that seemed to point in the right direction. Off I went and found nothing. Didn't see the hook and deleted it.

I don't mind time loops: Majora is my favourite Zelda and I quite enjoyed figuring out the crime in 12 minutes.

I don't mind obtuse starting points either. I must have died 10 times on No Man's Sky starting death planet before figuring out what to do.

Sounds like you missed the early guidance - on the starting planet you are given the objective of reaching the moon, and from their you pick up a trail that gives you some early direction. It's not necessary to take things in that order, but it helps

So as long as I look for clues and take things in order it won't be my worst recent game? Sounds good to me!

There isn't a set order as such just stuff you're more likely to stumble upon earlier.

Outer Wilds is a game I've been meaning to get back to for a while because the hook of being a space archeologist just isn't something found elsewhere.

Outer Wilds is in Game Pass, so I guess I can give it a try. Having looked it up, I'm interested in what it has to offer.

The worst recent game that I've played would have to be... how far are we talking for recent? 'Cus Fantasy Tower Defense came out two years ago and I can tell you now that is definitely a bad game that does not understand balance at all. A small Switch game, it starts easy enough, but soon it throws so much at you and everything seems as though it can heal itself and those around it that it becomes impossible to even progress through brute force tactics.

I thought it had been taken off of Game Pass, guess it must have come back on. I’m tempted to give it another go now OR mentioned about going for the moon rather than a storm ridden sea planet…… still think for that space exploration itch that No Man’s Sky would be a better fit for me without the time loop aspect.

I think the worst game I've played recently is Umbrella Corps. Its pretty much copy and paste and all levels, the gameplay is pretty bad.

The Hunt or Shadow Tactics. Although looking at the Steam store page for Shadow Tactics the reviews are "Overwhelmingly Positive" so maybe they've fixed it.

Just searched Outer Wilds on the forum as I just watched some interesting YouTube videos analysing the game, and the first hits I see are in the worst recent game thread, what the strawberry float

Personally, it's easily one of my favourite games of all time. It's absolute fantastic in every facet, the mini solar system is an incredible concept and the gameplay and narrative interwine in a way to make it one of the best examples of games being art. And that's not mentioning the music which enhances the whole experience. I can understand people bouncing off it for different reasons but 'worst recent game' is such a bad take. Even if it's not for you, it's an incredibly made game.

EDIT: Just realised OR put it better than I did already in the thread. I think it's on Gamepass now so I'd urge anyone who has access to give it a go, it is genuinely brilliant.
