PostWould you go back?

Was discussing this with my wife last night. Judging from the Covid, Work and Battlestation threads a lot of people are working from home. I was thinking about whether this enforced absence from the office could spark a change in how offices and workplaces are run in the long term. Obviously some jobs aren't suitable for WFH at all, but should there be a rethink about WFH being this weird privilege only your boss has? I appreciate some people might miss the office, and it's important to have these social interactions from a mental health perspective, but longer term, would a specific WFH day (maybe Wednesday, like uni sports afternoon and to stop people saying "Hump Day" unironically) work?

Seems an easy way to reduce stress and transport CO2 emissions in my opinion, and this seismic interruption to the 9to5 is surely the time to have a think about this.

I work from home once or twice a week usually, but I couldn't do it permanently (unless this is the new normal of course), as introverted as I am I do miss the office contact and being able to just go over to someone when you have a question.

I'd work from home every day if I could but unfortunately my employers are wankers and are still expecting us all in the office even now.

I actually find having to interact with my colleagues on a daily basis is far worse for my mental health than being alone as they're all horrible people who completely ostracise me anyway.

I cannot work from home due to being an Electrician. Just glad my boss stopped me working on Monday as some of the construction sites have up to 1000 people on.

I'm lucky enough to be able to do most things from home.

I think being in the office two or three times a week so I can chat in person is the sweet spot for me personally. It is a bit isolating doing things 100% via email.

If I had to choose between the extremes though I would rather wfh all the time than be in the office every day.

I love WFH and would happily never see or smell my colleagues again.

I cannot express enough how much I enjoy not having to be near certain people. It's not everyone, but I find most people intensely irritating, so I'm loving being away from everyone :toot: They want us all to use our webcams so we can we each other's faces... I move the window up on screen so I can't see them

I can do almost all of my job WFH, except when I'm delivering training, which I find works better face to face, but I hate working from home. I don't like having my work in my home environment, and my home environment isn't conducive to me doing work, either. I also really miss the interaction with people in the office.

I can do almost everything from home and I hate it. I don’t have my morning commute to get my exercise, I get distracted too easily, I can’t read the body language of my colleagues, they’re putting in more meetings so ‘we don’t feel isolated’...

The one nice thing is having my girlfriend working alongside me. I wouldn’t mind doing this two days a week. All week is maddening.

WFH is something our office offers to everyone, I dont avail of it usually cos my home interent is shockingly bad. Ive no choice now and Im just about to get my work done. I dont see this changing my habits, I like going to the office and getting out of the house, that may change as the kids get older but right now its nice to have an excuse to get out of the house.

I think I'd split Home/Office working, either 3:1 or 2:2.

This. WFH is ok, but there are some things that would be much easier if I was in the office. I’d like the freedom to be able to decide if I went into work or not.

I can't work from home unfortunately due to what my job entails :(

I'd love a work from home job though.
In fact anything that involves me being left alone in my own private space. With no deadlines or customers.

...Might just go on the dole come to think of it...

It's two polls, you're supposed to vote for it twice if it applies to you.

I'm currently finding working from home much less stressful than being in the office as I have a lot less intention with my boss, and can just get on with things a bit more and he's not constantly throwing more and more gooseberry fool my way in an unfocused bombarding manor. It's forcing the team as a whole to be more organised with tasks and workload which is step in the right direction in my eyes, too, as previously this has been very lax generally due to the way the department's managed.

My commute was 1-1.5 hours each way, and I'm now taking a full hours lunch rather than rushing 20 mins, and I'm doing much less overtime. I have so much extra time, it's fantastic.

I'd prefer to have a dedicated space, as I'm in the kitchen, but the space I have is much better than some people's I work with who are very cramped, unfortunately.

I'm also saving money on my commute, as well as food and drink.

Socially, I'm too busy usually to really talk to most people in the office, and I like working in a quiet room so I can concentrate (which isn't the case at work), so the isolation hasn't bothered me yet. I still chat with people from the team a little, so I'm not completely detached.

Overall, I'm currently liking it. But it's only been a few days, I might get sick of it after a few weeks.

I generally like being on my own and, when working, I like to concentrate on that. I couldn't go without interaction, though; I always enjoy seeing (most!) others and having a quick catch-up.

When I was working full time I enjoyed taking WFH days and would have loved to take them more regularly and frequently but I was too low in the chain to be allowed. But having said I really did love my colleagues and wouldn't have wanted to to WFH all the time. I freelance part time from home at the moment and like the lack of corporate bullshit but it doesn't pay enough to be a long term option. Once all this is over and I try to get a 'proper' job again it'll hopefully be in field archaeology so out and about all the time.

My partner works from home as standard, his company has a very remote workforce. It has advantages but he doesn't have the same opportunity to make friends, go to the pub, chat gooseberry fool etc, and the lack of low-level contact and feedback that you kind of take for granted with your boss and colleagues makes him worry sometimes about his job security, quality and long term prospects.
