I was woefully underpowered by the end of the game and it's no wonder I had such trouble getting through certain parts of the game. Surprised I completed it at all. :fp:

On my first play through of FFVII I hadn't really paid any attention to the materia system (and to be fair the tutorials are pretty shite!) so didn't know about anything but the real basics (equip Lightning = can use Bolt etc.), even fairly simple stuff like just pairing materia with ALL or ELEMENTAL had completely passed me by! :fp:

On a similar note I don't think I understood the junction system at all in FFVIII on my first run through the game.

Yep, I did basically the same thing again when it came to my first run at VIII!

Once you do understand junctioning it came make the game a bit too easy though, there are lots of ways to make yourself into an unstoppable beast quite early on!

I'm slightly sad that FFVIII is not getting the re-release treatment that all the other VII+ games have had recently - the story and characters are a bit bobbins but the junction system is really fun to play, and Triple Triad is a great card game as well!

That spinny jump in Super Mario World seemed to have little purpose to me apart from breaking yellow blocks and getting off Yoshi.

Many years later
...

You can jump (plus get a huge jump height boost) on spikey enemies, saws etc?

WUT.

Actually, I have a slight sense that it's just me on this one!

It's not actually mentioned in the manual - it just mentions being able to destroy some tougher enemies

https://www.nintendo.co.jp/clvs/manuals ... -SAAAE.pdf

I feel mildly justified in not knowing this.

Are you sure it's not just in Mario Maker?

I read that Square Enix lost the source code for FFVIII thus that’s why they haven’t re-releasing them.

I haven’t got any stories like this, but that’s probably because I always used to RTFM.
