I love it. "I'm an orphan.....er I nearly died once aswell.....but I don't want you to take that into account. Honest. I definitely didn't tell you that for sympathy."

If I went on I'd say "I come from a bog standard family who line in Bedfordshire and I've never had any life threatening conditions or had to live through a war. If you pick me I will spend the whole slot ranting about how shite this show is and that the viewers could spend the time doing something useful like killing themselves in the most expedient manner possible.".

I don't give myself much chance of getting much past the semi-finals if I'm being totally honest.

I remember a bit on Screen Wipe were Brooker said they only show the sob stories of the people who are actually good, because otherwise the humiliation of the talentless people wouldn't be so funny.

X-Factor is probably one of the most brainless pieces of "entertainment" around. It embarasses me that people out of my family actually watch it (they'll all women, mind, so I guess they don't know any better).

Yes, all the candidates are pre-screened obviously and they decide who goes through to see the judges (good and bad, for TV's sake). If someone's got a back story then they will dwell on it - or as with Bridgend girl last week force words in their mouths (apparently). There are also a lot of set ups auditions.

Love it! Prefer BGT though.

How the strawberry float did Cashley actually cheat on her? I think my knob would have turned down any other birds after having that.

The auditions are great fun, you snobby git. The thing that truly embarrasses me is when people spell 'embarrasses' incorrectly. Talk about shameful! :fp:

After the auditions it all gets a little boring, I think.

Watch the auditions, to point and laugh, but never bother with the live shows. But I might this year if it means a weekly dose of Cheryl in evening wear.

Great stuff from Charlie Brooker on the manipulation of reality TV in general:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBwepkVurCI

and more specifically, the X-Factor itself on 2:47 onwards...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zl0eBeelRPw

Essential viewing for looking at these programmes, though afterwards you will lapse into the meta-game of "spot the different day by the dress of the women judges in the same episode". It doesn't work with Simon Cowell, because he always wears the same bloody thing (probably for just this precise reason).

That first pic of Cheryl Cole on this page has been shopped so much.
