A subtly redesigned Xbox 360 controller has been spotted on the showroom floor at this year's Games Convention in Leipzig, sporting a new-feel d-pad that addresses the previously unresponsive and spongy model.

While aesthetically identical to the previous controller, the d-pad has been re-engineered to offer more instant control, with an eight way input taking place of the previous four. A brief hands-on with the controller playing Pro Evolution 2009 proved that the redesign has been effective, with the d-pad sitting in a larger rocker and proving more tactile.

It's expected to release at the same time as this year's Pro Evolution Soccer, and the re-design is thought to have been inspired by the imminent release of Street Fighter IV.

Screens

Well how about that. This was reported by Xbox World 360 almost 2 years ago. Sadly, the DPad shape is still a load of arse.

Nice to see MS admitting it's d-pad is shite but I can't see myself getting a new pad for something I barely use. Although SF4 might sell me it since I don't have a proper fighting stick.

The d-pad looks exactly the same. Hopefully it'll be better to use, though. And I don't like the green.

You can play Pro Evo with the D pad if you want - but I do not.

This is not a bad thing, I am on the lookout for a new pad so I may pick one up. My other two are a bit dodgy after I have played on them so much.

Not that I use the D-pad on the 360 controller often, but this can only be a good thing as it's shockingly bad at the moment. x

Good to hear they've improved the dpad, looks like I'll need to buy a new controller then.

Agreed. Don't both Sony and Nintendo have a patent on their D-pads or something so their design can't be copied? Meaning Microsoft had a difficult time coming into the race last trying to make a d-pad without copying anyone else. x

Best current design.

Nothing comes close to touching the d-pad on the Saturn.

Not worth getting a new controller for.

On the Wii? I don't agree, it's too wee (LOL) I don't like the DS Lite's d-pad either- the original DS is much better.

Eurogamer say the new pad is only going to be released for a limited time. Very odd.

I'm wondering if it's just simply that particular colour of controller that's limited edition, rather than the dpad.

:? I don't recall the Saturn D-pad as being all that great- it was just the same as the Megadrive's wasn't it?. I'll check when I get home. If we're talking about retro controllers then the SNES wins hands down anyway.
