Handy in that I bought Call of Duty 4 on the PS3 because the graphics were the same but the online multiplayer was free on the PS3. Handy in that I bought The Darkness on the 360 because the PS3 version ran like dog gooseberry fool with no AA and spoiled the game a bit, especially with those load times on the PS3 that even the cutscenes weren't long enough to cover for (yes I also own the PS3 version as well).

I own both consoles. It's handy.

I think a better way to put it for these games is that Wii owners win.

FEAR 2: Triple Format Face Off - PC Vs. Xbox 360 Vs. PS3

Winner: PC
Loser: PlayStation 3

It seems that a combination of developers targeting consoles first and foremost, combined with the generally falling cost of PC components is serving to make the platform extremely enticing once more for enthusiast gamers who want the best performance - and in many games, a relatively inexpensive investment can give you a gameplay experience massively improved over console. In the case of F.E.A.R. 2 it elevates all of the core aspects that are fun on 360 and transforms the whole game into a richer, more enjoyable experience.

For both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 owners, F.E.A.R. 2 is something of a miss. For owners of Sony's box, it's pretty much a write-off, not just because of the very poor performance issues, but because it arrives in the same time period as Killzone 2 - a game I've spent a lot of time with recently and is perhaps the most magnificent technical achievement I've seen on the current generation of consoles. In every sense that matters, Guerrilla Games' effort serves to make F.E.A.R. 2 an almost completely redundant release for PS3 players.

For Xbox 360 gamers, things aren't quite so clear cut, because while it's hardly the greatest first-person shooter on the system and certainly lacks a degree of innovation, there is much to like about F.E.A.R. 2. While the AI isn't as advanced as Killzone's, it still provides a decent enough challenge, and once you get out of the moribund hospital environment it's clearly a pretty handsome game. Uninspiring it may be, but it's solid. So, to quote joyfully and without shame from my dog-eared manual of '90s games journalism clichés, I'd say that it's 'recommended to fans of the genre'.

PS3 only owners getting the short end of the stick, again. Is there really any excuse?

so you don't buy your games until they have been compared in one of these face-off things, guess you must wait awhile after release before you buy games then.

Calling FEAR 2 for the PS3 a "write-off" is a bit harsh, to say the least. I wouldn't say it performs poorly at all - there's plenty of gamer there for a PS3 only owner fancying a punt. Alright, it's not perfect, but those barbs from EG are entirely needless.

Face-Off: Street Fighter IV

As it is, the most noticeable difference between the two versions has nothing to do with the graphics and is all about the more mundane matter of loading times - eight-to-nine seconds per round on 360, double that on PS3. Thankfully the latter version has a ten-minute optional install weighing in at just 2GB, which brings it into the same ballpark loading time as the 360 version running from disc. It's highly recommended that you do complete the install, as playing online against those who haven't done so can get annoying rather quickly. For its part, NXE's 5.7GB install takes much the same time to complete but has little effect on in-game performance.

And so we come to the key component: online play, and once again we find what appears to be a complete score draw. Accurate measurement of internet performance is almost impossible - every game will be different - but just to make things really tough we sought out the worst connections possible on both versions and while the gameplay felt different, it was still playable and the better player always won.

All of which leads us nicely on to the question of which version to buy if you're the owner of both PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles. The technical differences are apparent but not intrusive, and the gameplay is identical; if you're into playing online it all comes down to which friends list you'd prefer to be using. Offline, it's close, but 360 gets the nod.

Over and above that, the only other thing you need to know is that the gloriously ultra-cheesy '80s-themed soft rock fest - 'Indestructible' - sounds just as good on either system, so in the final analysis, everyone's a winner.

Damn right skippy. I'm not prepared to shell out 30 quid for a new game at all anymore. PC games retailing at 20 quid or at the most 25 quid means I'm not paying more than that for console games.

Also if I don't get a comparison on the net, I'll try it out for myself.

So within a day of having a PS3 I've already bought an inferior multi-format game, yay!

It plays the same according to that and if you don't want to invest in another pad then Dualshock over that 360 pad any day for a fighter.

Plus you can pick up a cheap USB Saturn pad or any USB arcade stick and it'll work.

But all the above is true. It may look better on 360 and let's be honest it'll be easy to play friends online but the core gameplay is the same. But the 360 pad is one of the worst pads ever for fighting games.

Got my fightpad today and the d-pad is far worse than the Saturn's d-pad.

They haven't mentioned that PSN is free.

SF4 online (PS3) is free so it is a plus.
