Xbox Elite & PS3 Slim - Fan noise

Howdy all.

I was playing my xbox for the first time in months the other night, and when the missus went to bed I had to mute the sound so that I could get to the next checkpoint in my game before heading off myself. I then heard what I thought was a vacuum cleaner noise, and it turned out to be the fan on the 360! My God that thing is stupidly loud. It was so bad that she came through to see what the noise was (office room/bedroom share a wall) which doesnt bode too well for future late night gaming fun.

I have one of the early 360 models, and I cant believe I never realised it was that loud! I was just wondering what the new PS3 slim and Xbox 360 Elite consoles are like in comparison. Are they equally as bad?

My Elite is quieter than my normal 360, and installing games to the HDD cuts out the noisy disk drive.

The PS3 slim is a lot quieter.

The slim is practically silent, you certainly wouldn't be able to hear it through a wall.

My Ps3 was a right noisy bastard. Sold it at the weekend and bought a slim.

My PS3 is quiet my xbox Elite is louder then the PS3 but quieter then my old 360

So when gaming with a low volume, is the Elite still loud enough to be classed as annoying?

Are you installing your 360 games? I find three quarters of the noise is the disc drive.

I haven't actually tried installing a game since I first got Fable II and experienced a lot of disc read errors. I popped Assassins Creed II into the Xbox last night and installed it, and its cut down the noise significantly!

I just can't believe how loud the disc drive is. Anyone know why that is? The original Xbox, Gamecube etc. (as far as I recall) never had the noise problem. Is it just a slip in quality or what?

It spins at maximum speed all the time, for some reason.
