Was this event really that bad anyway? I’m seeing quite a lot of disappointment on the likes of Twitter and Resetera and can’t actually tell if people are just doing it for a laugh/to troll, or if they actually found it that bad? I know the lack of gameplay wasn’t great (but I don’t recall the Sony event having loads of gameplay outside of Ratchet and Clank, little bit of Gran Turismo) but some people seemed to genuinely hate it? Sure it could have been better, but things could nearly always be better than what we end up with. Personally I was very happy with it, showed lots of good stuff coming in the future, not sure what’s out at launch besides Halo and The Medium).

I didn't find it bad at all, just nothing had that pit of the stomach fuuuuckkkk yeeeessssss next gen WOW factor I want before a new generation launches. That extends to the Ps5 event too, the only thing there which looked amazing was horizon, and mostly becuase I know they will deliver on it and it will be as good as they showed it to be. I we're so spoiled by how good things are now that games which would have looked jaw dropping 8 years ago, now barely register because it's only incremental changes on the surface.

For all the talk of biggest leap in generations, nothing gave me that millhouse in front of the tv feeling.

Neither show was awful but equally, neither show was amazing. I think Sony offered a little bit more in terms of "next gen" feel, but honestly, in retrospect, the Switch reveal presentation was so much better than they received credit for at the time.

The general focus for the next gen seems to be making titles with the fidelity of current gen games, or maybe a little above that, but running at more solid high framerates and sticking it in an open world setting.

Not necessarily a bad thing though. Well, every other game being open world might be.

And no loading times.

Sounds gooseberry fool to be honest.

Eliminating loading screens would be an excellent expectation to set in the medium... as long as they aren't all replaced by contrived squeezing through narrow gap sections.

I'm disappointed there still isn't much focus on better AI though.

Both the level of visuals this generation and the level of resources required to create them are reaching a natural limit though. Pushing it even higher isn't going to be sustainable.

Everwild is the game I really want shown yesterday, obviously Forza and Fable will be on my radar too but they seem to be a long way off.

At least I still want to get a Series X over a PS5 all due to GamePass, I don’t have the money for games like I used to so GamePass makes it an affordable hobby again.

I might do the same. Halo Infinite as a Series X exclusive would have got me to buy the console at launch - but not everyone. This new approach of making it cross-gen means Microsoft will likely lose out on initial sales of the console, but Xbox One owners who become attached to the game will be more willing to upgrade to the next console. It's kind of the same reason, I suspect, Sony releases triple-A games near the end of a generation.

ResetEra is heavy pro-Sony so there's that.

I thought it was fine, just as good as the Sony one.

You mean the epicentres of internet gaming hyperbole?

I know they’re pretty rubbish for getting an accurate viewpoint but the viewpoint of it being rubbish was seemingly widespread on both of them, while it was far from rubbish in my opinion.

The only game recently thats had me speechless was BotW, when you first stepped out of the cave and when you could leave the great plateau

I was never really sold on the first Horizon so not surprised the second one didn’t wow me, it looked nice though!

The Switch reveal was fantastic, recall getting up at 5 am or whenever if was on (I know it was pretty early for us in the UK), was sold on it from that day on  Although with it being a Nintendo console I was guaranteed to get one anyway!

Ah I wasn’t aware Resetera was quite heavy on the Sony side, presumed with it being such a large forum it’d probably have a decent split, but I only really browse it on the odd occasion (even then just the odd thread rather than site-wide) so don’t hang around long enough to see a real sense of bias one way or the other.

Oh yeah, it is HEAVILY Pro-Sony, and they basically worship Naughty Dog.

Just finished watching it again and I’m still really excited about the games they showed trailers for. Still think Halo Infinite looks incredible (maybe in part due to not having played the recent ones), Everwild looks visually fantastic but still none the wiser how it’ll play or what we’ll actually do in the game :fp: Forza is bound to look and play great, Avowed’s setting is very appealing to me (watching it again I still think it looks like a bit like a cross between Lord of the Rings (looked like a Balrog about to burst through the open doorway at the end, Skyrim and a bit of Marvel with the Dr Strange-esque magic at the end). I’ve never played State of Decay or Stalker but both looked like they could be decent? Fable should be great, The Medium looks great as well now we’ve seen more of it. It’s just a shame they didn’t have more to show of Fable. The much rumoured Perfect Dark reboot didn’t get a mention, wonder if they’re waiting on that for the next lot of news?

I’ve still no idea what on earth Psychonauts 2 is either, psychedelic fuelled dream/nightmare?

Maybe you should watch the ratchet trailer again on a 4K tv if at all possible. To quote Richard from digital foundry, the graphical fidelity is higher than in the ratchet cgi movie from a few years ago. Will be interesting to see what they make of what was shown here. Shouldn’t be long for their analysis.

I’ll give it a read but will still prefer to see Digital Foundry’s analysis they don’t always see eye to eye with the eurogamer staff, plus I’m more interested in the technical stuff.

Most exciting things for me:

1. I get to play ALL of those games, potentially discovering a new genre or style I never knew I liked.

2. This is just the beginning of the reveals, they have a bunch more studios yet to show off their goodies

N4G had quite a few articles at the top of its page from the bigger websites that was critical of the conference. The sticking point for them has been the inconsistency with messaging about generational exclusives.

Saturday morning, I’m tired and have a bit of time, perfect! :)

Edit: 60 minutes FFS! 1.5x speed here I come.

Edit 2: it’s talking over the whole presentation, and I never able to take it all in the first time, so that’s okay!
