You are assuming the mass market stomachs multiple consoles at once. My experience is that most people that aren't huge gamers won't.
Hence why this announcement won't move boxes. Good chunk of 360 owners either have already bought a PS4 or have friends who went PS4. Said people either kept their 360s or dumped their 360s, and aren't in the market for a £300 box that plays some of their 360 games and whatever exclusives Microsoft can cook up. By the time the £200 barrier gets breached, I would expect Microsoft would have forgotten all about this initiative. Again, Microsoft should have announced this in 2013.

There *may* be techncial challenges and there *might* be uncertainty about how and when games will become compatible, but it's a step up from what has gone before.
The Wii U can run Wii games (for free), the One can soon run 360 games (for free)... I hope that Sony looks again at PS Now and their approach to pricing. Perhaps they'll even work harder to make it possible for the PS4 to play PS3 discs.
Has to be a good thing.
It's not a bad thing, but it is grossly overhyped. As I said, look at Xbox Originals and how that was handled, and I'd expect this to be very similar.
