Honestly, take out that big floating crystal thing and I wouldn't be able to tell that wasn't a real photo.

Still coming in 2021. No mention of Remedy's Campaign in that update.

This looks nice in photographs and slow videos but how does it keep the detail at 60FPS? I often feel we push the wrong way with gaming graphics. Recent games like AC Valhalla still suffer from pop-in, models undeforming and the dreaded 'quick growing of grass' as you move across the map. I want current graphics but all of this happening much further away to give the illusion it never happens rather than more detailed grass growing very quickly.

Demo will be out later today.

The demo is very short: ruins, floating diamond thing, that's it.

During the GDC talk where the demo debuted, Coalition technical director Kate Rayner said that Unreal Engine 5 game development is still "really early," but that this demo was a good opportunity for the Microsoft-owned studio to "kick the tires" and collaborate with Epic on Xbox optimization.

Alpha Point was originally made with Unreal Engine 4—where it chugged in the editor—and was then moved to UE5 and completed. According to Coalition technical art director Colin Penty, most assets in the demo are made up of 300,000 to 500,000 triangles, 15 times the number of triangles in the average asset from Gears 5, a game that came out in 2019.

Penty also showed off a brief UE5 character rendering demo, noting the ridiculously high polycount of the hair, which is handled by Unreal Engine's Groom system.

"One funny stat I was thinking of, with the eyelashes being 3,500 triangles: That is kind of the budget of an entire Xbox 360 character, now contained within the eyelashes of one of these characters," said Penty.

He concluded by saying that he thinks UE5 games will look "incredible" on Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Alpha Point runs at 46 fps on an Xbox Series X at a 4K display resolution. I say display resolution there because the actual render resolution was set at 50% or higher and upscaled to 4K using Epic's Temporal Super Resolution. So, you might get around 46 fps rendering at 1440p (but not 4K) with PC hardware that's comparable to an Xbox Series X. Or you can also flip on Temporal Super Resolution, or possibly DLSS, or another upscaler.

Regarding The Coalition's next game, whatever it is, you can scour the tech demo for clues when it's available to watch, but Penty said that the assets in Alpha Point were made for Alpha Point, and are not from a game project, and that The Coalition isn't announcing a game at GDC.

Absolutely spot-on, imho, Carlos! There seems to be - as with every new generation or tech update - a fair amount of BS around about graphical capabilities. I recall that Unreal 5 demo last year of impressive-looking caves / statues; all very nice but it's unlikely we'll see console games running at that level of frame-rate and fidelity.

The PC Gamer report about "fitting a whole Xbox 360 character into an Unreal 5 character's eyelash" is pure hyperbole; technically true but we've already seen that new gen consoles can struggle to deliver 4k/60 FPS in some games and allocating that level of fidelity to eyelashes just isn't going to happen in the real world.

I love seeing tech advances in games and things sure have come a long way; but it's probably worth having a healthy dose of scepticism when some of the stats are bandied around.

(This isn't an Xbox thing, obvs; the PS5 will struggle more than the XSX to deliver on the exaggerated claims).

Pretty sure that the Unreal 5 Demo running on PS5 last year was 1440p at 30fps so the 'fidelity and frame rate' were not at a particularly high bar.

The Coalition are seen by many in the industry, including Digital Foundry as one of the best devs around when it comes to the Unreal Engine, the Gears games in general have been showcases for each iteration as they originally were made by Epic themselves.

I don't care about the amount of 'triangles' per object but in terms of lighting and better upscaling, these could be massive gains for this gen so you can take some things in these tech demo's into account.

Who can forget the T-Rex on Demo 1 for the PS1. Compare and contrast with the actual T-Rex that then turned up in Tomb Raider (which ironically is one of the places Demo 1 was included).

Yeah, it was running at that spec. Even so, according to some tech-focussed sites such as Tweaktown:

If we look at the tech demo as a pure demonstration on what's technically capable, things come into context. This won't be the baseline for all games. Most games won't be able to pull this off, and it's kind of a theoretical current ceiling for performance under this kind of graphics load.

Tweaktown share some interesting thoughts on the PS5 demo, plus how Xbox X could push further - click here to view.

Definitely; the Xbox 360/eyebrow thing stood out as an attention-grabbing soundbite but the lighting effects could be tremendous.

The T-Rex and Manta Ray demos were, indeed, both awesome!

With advances in AI you won’t have to do native 4K which will give more room for the other bits. Resolution is quite costly.

The Coalition present #AlphaPoint - an insight into the team's first tech demo created entirely in Unreal Engine 5. With Gears 5 pushing graphics to all new heights with Unreal Engine 4 back in 2019, the team is looking to the future and demonstrated an early look at what’s possible with Unreal Engine 5 on Xbox Series X|S. This demo was showcased at #GDC21.

The Coalition share a real-time character rendering test on Xbox Series X and their first bits of discovery on what’s possible with next-gen character creation using Unreal Engine 5. This demo was showcased at #GDC21.

Gaming

Gaming revenue increased $357 million or 11% driven by growth in Xbox hardware, offset in part by a decline in Xbox content and services.

Xbox hardware revenue increased 172% driven by higher price and volume of consoles sold due to the Xbox Series X|S launches.

Xbox content and services revenue decreased $128 million or 4% driven by a decline in third-party titles on a strong prior year comparable that benefitted from stay-at-home scenarios, offset in part by growth in Xbox Game Pass subscriptions and first-party titles.

First $15B year for Xbox.

Yum.

Looking at Uber Eats, it's £18 for a pack of 12 not including additional charges. It'd cost about £22 to have these delivered. :dread:

Hey, at 26 grams of sugar per doughnut, it's at least an improvement on the 66 grams of sugar in a bottle of that ghastly Mountain Dew. These collaborations are getting healthier!
