Mate put his Xbox Series S into Dev mode (you need to set up dev account online it costs $20) and is now playing Ocarina of Time on it.

I'd love to do this but fearful of a banhammer... :shifty:

You’ll not get banned for running a dev build of retroarch in dev mode.

I’ve gone a step further and got my account on a retroarch whitelist so it’s literally just an app I download from the store and use in normal retail mode without having to sign out or reboot or anything.

I’m currently playing through Breath of Fire IV on my Series X, and although a bit fiddly to get the right files in the right place, once it’s in place it works like a dream.

Anyway, the Series S: it’s so small. Reminds me a lot of PS2 actually. Setup was a breeze and I love how even my folders sync across. It did ask me to switch to 4K/HDR when I booted it, so I’m not sure about “it can’t output 4K”. One disappointment is the controller though, there’s a grindy feel to the left stick, while the right stick is smooth as. It’s as if there’s a bit of dirt in there. If this was my only one I’d be immediately taking it back, but I have about 8 Xbox pads in the house, including an elite, so I don’t really care enough to bother

I think this is what MS wants tbh.

This is absolute horse sh*t btw. They've built the most powerful console of the gen, resolution and maybe framerates in future may be less on the S but it doesn't detract away from how a game on Series X will look, like, at all and with AMD bringing their version of DLSS in the next couple of years coupled with the fact that X and S are the only consoles this gen to have full RDNA 2 support (which no game has used yet) then your argument holds less weight.

Developers have already complained that its taking up their resources away from series x development. Its harming the industry as a whole imo. We already have one retro console, the nintendo switch, and don’t need another.

As for the old full rdna, its not making any difference. Sony simply created custom tools that far out perform amds own version. Amd will be using some of sonys ideas in rdna 3. This is why most ps5 games are out performing series x, especially in relation to framerate. I think the series x is essential if you don’t want to miss out on future exclusives and in all honesty i feel that after a few months of owning it, the bc really is worth the £450. Nostalgia has been the theme of lockdown.

No game has used RDNA 2’s features yet… (Variable Rate Shading, Sampler Feedback Streaming, Mesh Shading, DirectML, Hardware Decompression and Fidelity FX super resolution) you’re ignoring this point, and without it we are seeing performance advantages already.

I now understand why you talk so much nonsense, stop watching pro PS5 YT vids and RedGamingTech. AMD is not using Sonys ideas for RDNA3, and what games out perform Series X on PS5? Valhalla, Control, Outriders, Mortal Shell and Dirt 5 have all been patched to run the same (sometimes better - Outriders, Control and Mortal Shell) than PS5. All cross gen games run better on Xbox despite these 'tools' you're going on about.

Most PS5 multiplatform games run better. There have been a few patches that have made them the same, but the PS5 is still outperforming Xbox Series X. Even if it wasn't, there's still no series x game that rivals even a PS4 Pro enhanced game, let alone Demon's Souls and Ratchet and Clank.

I hope microsoft sort it out and think they will show some big games at E3. They are just one massive contradiction - they want to be the most powerful, then release games that don't show any advantage and even worse, release the series s!

Most PS5 don't run better, you're simply factually wrong on that, for a month or two at launch that was the case but it's not now. The Demons Souls and Ratchet & Clank games look Stunning (plus HZD Forbidden west) and MS do have to respond to that, this is a valid criticism.

I honestly don't think MS will sort it out at this E3 because too many games are too far out. If Forza Horizon 5 is next gen only and we already know Flight Sim is, they should be graphically nice enough. I think you're dead wrong on the Series S though, especially with the Super Resolution Fidelity FX stuff hitting Xbox dev kits in a couple of weeks.

Well let's see what happens. I am looking forward to FH5, although would have preferred a setting in Asia as opposed to Mexico. I do think Microsoft will get a few big third party games out on game pass day one to keep the early adopters happy and we may even get ubisofts back catalogue on it soon too, which to be honest is more than enough to keep us happy for a year or two.

Halo Infinite should impress, although I am not overly bothered by it as it looks to be a multiplayer focused game like Destiny, which I do not like at all. The BC is keeping me going and am loving GTA 4 at 60fps, although it is very fuzzy. The value of replaying these classics at a higher resolution and/ or framerate is something I undervalued before, but it is so important to have these games and even allow the younger generation to play them more easily.

Halo Infinite is nothing like Destiny, like, at all. It has a Campaign that can be played in Co-op (like all Halo games) and MP which is separate (like all Halo MP games). The only major differences between previous Halo games and Infinite is that the campaign has Open World areas where you do objectives/side quests in addition to the main campaign and the MP is standalone and FTP.

I’m tempted to take up that offer from Game. I have 2 PS4s ( a Pro in the lounge and the launch PS4 in the bedroom). Neither gets much use but the Pro will stay at least until (if) I get a PS5 and there’s no rush on that front.

I have a Series X in the lounge already together with the old XB1 which I’ve never gotten around to packing away. Wonder if I can trade the launch PS4 and XB1 for a Series S at no cost?

Assuming they’re both 500GB models, not quite, but very nearly!

If you do the deal with the original Xbox, you’d have £130 to pay, and the regular trade-in for the PS4 is £120, so I guess you’d just have to pay the £10 difference.

I tried ME Legendary Edition on my XSS last night. I had the console set to 4K and I'm hoping forcing it to 1080 gives it a bit of a performance boost, because the tearing was so bad I called my local MP to complain.

(Dunno if it tears at all on XSX, actually. Mine is hooked up to a TV with VRR so it's immune)

For those who didn’t want to lose Void Bastards when it left Game Pass, but didn’t think the GP discount price of £20 was very good, you can now get the game+DLC bundle for £10.99! Glad I waited.

Satya Nadella and Phil Spencer on Why Microsoft is “All In” on Gaming

Ahead of the first-ever Xbox & Bethesda Showcase on Sunday, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer hosted a series of conversations with Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, and members of Microsoft’s Gaming Leadership team on the future of gaming at Microsoft. We’ve shared some highlights from the day in another article, but we also wanted to share one of the day’s biggest moments on its own.

The conversation between Spencer and Nadella focused on the importance of gaming at Microsoft and in the world. Since this was such an important conversation, we thought it would be best to share it in its entirety. (Please note that we’ve edited slightly for clarity.)

I'm with Jeff Grubb on this, this will be a 'good' E3 but next years Xbox E3 will 'be potentially incredible' because it will be full of gameplay from all the big hitters.

Buying Bethesda is not 'just talking'.
