They aren't moving on, this is all the 'Xbox One Family', no one gets left behind.

The end of generations.

Sorry mate. Know when people are hiding information behind words! Phil Spencer is a charmer, but in the past he has repeatedly used verbal misdirection.

Go to the 1:37:28s mark of the video. Phil Spencer says:
"Xbox One, Xbox One S and Project Scorpio will all be compatible. All Xbox One games and accessories will play on all three. No one gets left behind."

3 Sentences.
S1 "Xbox One, Xbox One S and Project Scorpio will all be compatible." Compatible is not defined. At its most basic level this likely means users of different consoles can be on each other's friends list and message each other.

S2 "All Xbox One games and accessories will play on all three." This means all games and peripherals made for the Xbox One will work on the XBO S and Xbox Scorpio. It doesn't say one way or the other whether Scorpio games or peripherals will work on the XBO.

S3 "No one gets left behind." Fantastic marketing slogan that suggest the loyalty of companions at war on a battlefield who will go back to face danger to save their wounded companions. But in practical terms related to consoles it means nothing. One educated guess is that it means if you are an XBO owner any digital games you have bought will be available to you on the Scorpio!

Lets be real, how is a brand new 4K made for Scorpio game or VR set going to work on the Xbox One?

EDIT: I've just seen Monkey Man's post of the Spencer interview on The Verge.

I wonder how 4K games now work on older machines... Hmmm

VR won't work on base X1, stop being pedantic. Phil literally said halo 6 would be 4K on Scorpio and lower on X1...

From reading The Verge interview. I get the impression that there will be a sales window where some games are compatible with XBO and Scorpio. After that everything will be Scorpio dedicated games. I actually think this makes the most sense.

No one gets left behind, importantly, this means all my games are staying including 360 VR optional would be cool.

I'm happy with that. It's sound like this is a powerful stop gap until they're ready to launch Xbox 4 in say 2020.

It'll carry the "Xbox One" name (Xbox One Pro?) and all Xbox One branded games will run on all Xbox One branded consoles.

There will, however, come a point when they have to shift to next-gen to compete with PS5, that's where things could, potentially, become messy and confusing.

Not happy with MS and Sony bringing out variations. Would just prefer them to say it's a new console rather than these different models under 'one family'. The general masses may get confused with different models and it goes against the strength of the consoles that everyone was on a level playing field. I'm afraid this is the end of an era for the consoles and it will be very fragmented going forward.

Sounds amazing, Microsoft needed to get back the most powerful console angle and it looks like they have done it, I'm in.

This, I'm not happy with either Sony or Microsoft here.

If it helps to popularise console gaming and make them more money then great, but I see casuals becoming confused.

I think this just cements the Xbone as an absolutely cluster strawberry float in every respect. I have time to save to get Scorpio but strawberry float me consoles aren't supposed to die out so often. The Xbone came out on the day my son was born and he will barely be four years old by the time I have to upgrade again.

The one thing I'm cautious about is this all peripherals carry over. Because the new controllers are using Bluetooth and the current X1 controllers don't, so at some point they will be left behind.

Obviously 4K and high end VR and XB1 won't go together, but the vast majority of titles will release on XB1. Why? Because they'll also release on PS4. But yes, XB1 <> Scorpio compatibility isn't as clean cut as Sony's PS4 <> PS4K plan. Sony could use that to their advantage when marketing their tech.

It's strawberry floating embarrassing when you read some of the posts in this thread :dread:

I'll happily upgrade to the Xbox One Two U if it's that much more powerful as the current Bone.

It seems odd that the people saying they won't upgrade are sying they will go for the pc which is all about upgrades.
Nothing is forcing people to upgrade but this just gives people who would like to a new option.

Consoles are successful due to generational upgrades and simplicity. Take that away and you may as well have a PC.

Every Xbox game will now be on PC, add to that PC exclusives and free online and you can see why people feel that they may as well switch.

Ok buy a PC then.
I'm getting a Scorpio and going to be very pleased with it as it will be my first xbox since the 360 slim.

I should have bought a PC ages ago and not bothered with the XB1. Eh.

Even at £500+ (if that's what its going to cost) a similarly spec'd PC would cost a hell of a lot more from scratch.

For the vast majority of people its not a trivial thing to get a PC.

People buy consoles for the ease of use, affordability and general reliability that comes from a set specification. I doubt anyone who bought an XBone or PS4 envisaged significantly upgraded hardware would be released after just a few years. It completely kills the affordability aspect of console gaming and even if you stick with the originals it'll be disappointing knowing the game could look and run better on the upgraded hardware with the possibility of additional features.

If you want to go the upgrade route you might as well get the full experience and build your own PC with superior hardware, online systems, controls and ability to upgrade parts whenever you like.

It probably is a bit too early to judge these mid-generation upgrades, but I'd be a bit salty if I'd bought an XBone or PS4.
