Seems like this (PS5019-E19T) will be the SSD in the XSX, 3.6GB/s read and 2.2GB/s write speeds -

The cables hanging directly in front of those vents doesn’t seem like the best idea, to me.

I've seen the "cables in front of vents" as a negative argument against this a few times now. It really won't make that much difference at all to the air flow.

Including modern storage in the next generation of consoles is a great move, but those read/write speeds are likely to be largely irrelevant unless they start working out some really interesting ways of packaging the data for games.

High speed NVMe drives just don't make any real difference for load times in things like games - the profile of read operations that a game uses don't play in to the strengths of the format.

Edit: There was nothing.

Maybe something at the Super Bowl tonight, Greenberg says "expect the unexpected" near the end.

What’s the Xbox Series X Mystery Port? It’s for Expandable Storage

A few weeks back, we got our first look at the backside of the Xbox series X. At that time, I believed the long-rectangular port between the HDMI and digital audio port that was for diagnostics and I was incorrect. That port is for storage expansion, according to people familiar with the company’s plans, and offers the series X a work-around as games continue to expand in size.

The bigger question, which I don’t know the answer to quite yet, is what technology is Microsoft using for the expandable storage. Considering that the internal drive is going to be of the ‘high-performance’ variety, a flavor of NVMe is expected and not a platter drive, external storage needs to be quick as well. While the back of the device does have USB ports that could be used for expansion, that mystery slot is a dedicated storage expansion for high-speed hardware.

It's obviously for emergency After Eight storage in case of a snack emergency.

Microsoft are thinking of everything  .

That'd be the power cable, more than likely. I can't see anything else that could be it.

It's an interesting idea that they're going to give people the option to use less expensive but slower storage options as the cards are crazy expensive. The cards will obviously come down in price but I think were going to be near the end of the generation by the time the super speed cards are at even mildly reasonable prices.
I have a feeling I'll be sticking with the base storage for a while and maybe upgrading in a few years as at the moment while I have 3TB for my PS4 and One X I only really use a few games at a time and I don't think I'd be all that bothered about being space limited again.

This may be impossible but with GamePass could Microsoft allow us to pre-download next gen games or even hardware updates and stuff on our current machines so we then only have to do a manual transfer by swapping external HDD's?
That could cut the pressure on the network on day one and should be quicker than having to download it all when you get the machine.

Would that work or would it just be a security nightmare that would allow game copying?

It’s possible I suppose. I presume games in Extenal HD will work or at least require a small patch. Also with Xcloud you can play a game while waiting for it to download in Gamepass.

That's the actual use case I see for streaming. Playing on your phone or whatever is nice but being able to get a stream going while the game downloads is a real quality of life improvement.
