Fast, widespread adoption of new technology is only usually pushed by consumer demand and there really isn't huge demand for a lot of the things that TV producers are trying to push at the moment. Outside of gaming most of this stuff is limited in its application

But 8K is twice as good as 4K.

Only if you're sat 2.256m away from your tv which is in the corner at a 1.03 m and 12 degree angle from your L shaped sofa which matches your feature wall.

Superdry.

But that one goes up to 8K.

Xbox Series S may not be able to play Xbox One X enhanced titles – here's why

The Xbox Series S is Microsoft’s more affordable, entry-level console that promises to provide all the bells and whistles of next-gen gaming, albeit at a lower resolution.

It turns out, though, that the smallest Xbox ever made may struggle to make the most out of backwards compatible games; specifically Xbox One X enhanced titles.

According to Digital Foundry, who noted the Xbox Series S has less system memory available to titles than the Xbox One X (8GB vs 9GB), the cheaper Xbox will most likely use the Xbox One S versions of backwards compatible games.

That means games that were enhanced to support 4K resolution, such as Final Fantasy XIII, Red Dead Redemption and Sonic Generations, will run at their regular resolutions instead, which is often 720p.

“The Xbox One X has 9GB of system memory available to titles. The Series S has 8 [and] I’ve seen some reports that it’s actually 7.5GB,” said Digital Foundry’s John Linneman. “Regardless, with either configuration, it’s still lower than the Xbox One X, so I think it’s almost a full gone conclusion that the backwards compatibility will be drawing upon Xbox One S as opposed to Xbox One X.”

https://www.techradar.com/news/xbox-ser ... -heres-why

Well that’s a bit disappointing.

You can say that again. I've got no interest in picking up an Xbox at launch, as I'd rather upgrade my PC for 'Xbox exclusives', but I had hoped to pick up a cheap Series S in a few years for console exclusives like Metal Gear Solid 2/3 and Rare Replay.

Details of Xbox One backward compatibility on Series S:
Xbox Series S runs the Xbox One S version of backward compatible games while applying improved texture filtering, higher and more consistent frame rates, faster load times and Auto HDR.

https://www.gamespew.com/2020/09/xbox-s ... -confirms/

So as suggested, the 'X-Enhanced' features added to some games during the mid-gen refresh will be on Series X but not on Series S. Seems this is due to the Series S being designed as a lower res machine rather than aiming for 4K gaming.

Edit - the vast majority of the X-Enhanced games are 4K:

Not a surprise, it was in the github leak last year. Seems like you'll be just be missing 4K textures.

As long as I get the improved frame rates and load times, I'm happy.

This would have been the official reveal.

I wonder if it would generated the same sort of hype the leak did. (Official reveal is dry.)

Sounds like it wasn't. This was for the various types of media under embargo not the general public.

Another Xbox possibly on the way according to this rumour...

Rumours of a third next-gen Xbox console have surfaced, potentially pointing to an all-digital version of the Xbox Series X. Images shared last night appear to show the Xbox Series V, a mid-point between the two currently-announced versions.

twitter.com/IdleSloth84/status/1304218062275698696

The rumours appear to have stemmed from Twitter user Idle Sloth, who shared an off-screen image showing the alleged Series V between the Series X and Xbox Series S console. Idle Sloth states that the Series V would fit between the S and X in terms of power. The attached image also suggests that the V would be all-digital, as there’s no sign of the disk drive that accounts for some of the Series X’s significant bulk.

This is far from an entirely watertight rumour - it wouldn’t take too much photoshop expertise to have conjured up a picture of a slightly smaller Series X and adapted a logo to fit - but it could link to an as-yet unexplained Xbox codename that’s been doing the rounds recently.

Image is a fake for sure.

It's thought that 'Edinburgh' is the xCloud server blade for Series X. At the moment the server blades are based on Xbox One.

Yeah... I'm not buying it. If there was a third console, they would have announced it with the Series S. The very credible leak that gave us the pricing and release date would have mentioned it. And I'm not sure Microsoft would be crazy enough to try and have three similar consoles on the market at the same time for the launch of a new generation machine.
