Bought Control UE from CDKeys, started the download and noticed there was also a download to start thats marked as Series X/S. Is it optimised now? Thought it was the start of Feb when the update happens for digital copies of the game?

Yeah, the X/S file is just a placeholder. It’s due 2nd Feb.

My Xbox Series X order has been stuck in “packing” limbo since last Thursday so I summoned the spirit of Usher and within an hour it was shipped.

Well it’s here. Really like the look of it. Got a bunch of stuff downloading but as they were coming down it occurred to me they’re all excellent, but old games I’ve played a bit before. Kind of deflated the “new console” excitement.

I suppose you could say I got this thing to play the PC games I’ve not really had the chance to of late, and for the promise of Microsoft games to come, but I’ve no immediate desire to play anything on it just yet.

I did kind of wonder why you were bothering getting one.

I have a lot of games on it I want to play, I’m just in the middle of some other games I want to play more this week.

Well, anyway, I’ve spent a little time playing with it now. The UI, while I’m not a huge fan of the home menu layout, definitely seems smarter in terms of serving up the bits you’d want to get to when you open it in game. And the labelling on the audio and video settings is miles ahead of PS5’s arcane AV choices. Dolby Atmos being right there is excellent, and sounds great in my Atmos setup, but unfortunately, the delay is too great to be usable for games.

I’ve only tried 4 games so far from Game Pass, but aside from Ori and the Will of the Wisps (looking absolutely astonishing at 4K/120 with HDR on my OLED), I don’t think my choices left a particularly good first impression. Subnautica is disappointingly locked at 30fps, Call of the Sea has some inexplicable frame rate issues for such a technically light looking game, and Spiritfarer’s title screen menu is literally broken (the press any button prompt never goes away, the cursor is invisible so you don’t know what option you’re selecting, and if you save and quit from in game, you can never get control of the menu back). Of course, none of these are the fault the the hardware, and not enough to deter me from playing these games further, it’s just my gooseberry fool luck

Edit: Apparently they’ve left the dev console in the subnautica release and it’s possible to turn off vsync so it pushes it to 60. Hot diggidy

I have yet to see stock pop up at Smyths, but now it's saying stock is expected in Feb where as up until yesterday it was stock due in January. Shite.

I put in about 5 hours on Spiritfarer on Series X after playing around the same amount on One S and have had no issues with it (aside from Quick Resume being as knackered on that as every other game).

It turns out it’s a known issue that goes away as soon as you have a save file so if you brought over your save from your One S that’ll be why

Interesting. That's a pity for those just coming to it on Series X as it's a lovely game.
