Most recent data for Sony puts them at generating 8 trillion Yen in revenue for 2020 which equates to about 80 billion dollars. Microsoft's latest data shows 2020 revenue at 143 billion.

Revenue has little to do with how much a company is worth or more importantly, it's spending power.

MS is a 1 trillion dollar company.

https://www.theverge.com/2019/4/25/18515623/microsoft-worth-1-trillion-dollars-stock-price-value

Sony is an 80bn company and make 80bn in revenue.

The reason MS's revenue is only double is because they are investing in infrastructure, there's a reason 1 company has a worldwide cloud infrastructure plus 1bn people using a windows device. It really is a david and goliath situation financially speaking.

On top of that, Xbox makes about 3bn in revenue which is TINY in MS's grand scheme of things yet Phil sits on the board of Microsoft.

True but share price also isn't the only thing that dictates a company's size or buying power. Revenue, income, assets, equity are all valuable indicators and yes MS is bigger in each, but not by the orders of magnitude you are implying :)

Yep, it feels like they're all going in very different directions at the moment, which is only a good thing. I can see Microsoft selling a lot of Lockhart consoles to people who don't game that much but are happy to pay a subscription and load it up a few times a week to play the latest COD or whatever.

People laughed at Phil when he said Sony were not the competition but you can see what he means now.

It’s really interesting these different strategies, I don’t think ending Xbox Live gold will suddenly make Xbox the bigger brand next gen at all but it will make a bit of a splash. Over time is where it will push Sony a bit, cross playing with Series X but one gamer doesn’t have to pay a subscription!?

We don’t know if it will workout for any of them including Xbox but they certainly putting things in place to give it a decent try.

It's quite interesting that we now have three companies all taking somewhat different approaches to the business of gaming

If they do get rid of Gold... what about all the games we’ve had on GWG that are dependent on having an active subscription? You'd hope they would use the Game Pass sub to maintain the rights, but who knows?

Some rumours from Resident Evil leaker & Resetera mod Dusk Golem -

I'm not going to say too much, but from some murmurings I've been hearing, I'll just say I suspect this topic is going to age "interestingly" when a few more details on both platforms are revealed.

I mean this in a few more ways, but to give the broadest idea, I'll just say the Xbox X is by far more powerful than the PS5 if we're just talking raw power, multi-platform games will run better on Xbox X is something people are going to have to prepare themselves for. Add to this Microsoft are ready to lowball Sony when it comes to price. They can more easily make a sacrifice and get back profits from Game Pass than console sales than Sony can from that comparatively.

I was away doing stuff until recently, but just a few friends I have in the industry working on games for both platforms and a few other insiders I know. More than one source. The basic gist of what I've heard is the PS5 is really good to work on for games exclusive to it, but in practice the specs kinda' get weird for multi-platform games. If multi-plat the usage of PS5's SSD systems does help a bit, but not to the fullest, and I've heard some dev friends talk a bit about the struggle PS5 has for 1080p games running 60fps still, while Xbox X doesn't have the same problem and can push above that even in most cases. Of course, this is a small selection of people I've talked to, there's more to it, but I hear something that's going to make this generation a bit interesting is the PS5 & Xbox X's focus in other areas are going to make multi-platform games "interesting" this generation, to the point we may actually see less of them and far more games coming to one platform or the other (plus PC), as it's actually kinda' hard to make a game optimal for both platforms due to where they're a bit differently focused.

But again, this is coming from the small pool of developers I've heard this from, there may be unique challenges to the games they're specifically making in this area and that isn't lost on me.

That said, I am going to dip on this as I just like sharing a bit of what I hear, I'm not super invested, but I knew something I could share could make this discussion a bit more interesting to where current feelings lie. I can promise you I'm not saying this based off of nothing, There's probably more on the tech side specifics I'm spacing on here/don't fully understand myself, if I'll be honest. But things will be reflective here when both consoles are out and multi-platform games are out there.

There's something I've heard a few times now, but I don't want to say it how I've heard it as I also know both haven't cemented a price yet. Just, the way I can say it without stating something that already isn't fully in stone yet is just expect that it's very, very likely the PS5 will cost more than the Xbox X, and right now Microsoft is more interested into getting people into their ecosystem and more willing to take a loss on console sales than Sony is.

I don’t see the amount of third party games coming out on Xbox Series X and PS5 being too dissimilar to what we’ve had the last generation, even with the differences between the two consoles.

Just seems like a likely repeat of PS2 to Xbox in terms of multiformat development to me.

...are going to make multi-platform games "interesting" this generation, to the point we may actually see less of them and far more games coming to one platform or the other (plus PC)

Development costs alone make this a nonsense from a hardware perspective. He also seems to have completely forgotten the existence of the Xbox Series S, which will be the weakest of the 3 and will also have to run all of the same games as the X and, in turn, what will possibly be the midranged PS5. The only way his scenario occurs, which it will, is when Sony or Microsoft pay for exclusivity to mitigate the costs, and even then the costs are so astronomical (I mean you've effectively got to pay for the potential loss of millions of sales) that it's timed exclusivity. To add to the risk, that's then prone to backfiring (Rise of the Tomb Raider is a perfect example of something that should have been a major release being a big sales disappointment on PS4; we may see it repeated with all this "exclusive content" for Marvel's Avengers).

It's a self imposed stipulation, but if developers out of necessity can get the new Halo running on an OG Xbox One and a Series X, they're not going to encounter too many hurdles getting their games onto an Xbox Series S through PS5 and Series X because they're never going to design a game that can't run on a weaker machine to begin with. Irrespective of different architectural strengths and weaknesses, there's inevitably common ground between the 3 systems, 4 if you include PC. Not that I expect the level of half-arsery that occurred for many releases on Dreamcast, which half the time made the console appear as if it had more in common with the PS1 than a PS2.

Basically the cut-off point for a multiformat developer isn't the Series X, it's the PS5 or Series S. Or in the case of Microsoft's exclusives, the Xbox One, which will then shift to the S...if we're going with the belief that's still real.

The struggling to get 1080p/60FPS game -

I'm talking about Resident Evil Village. The game's terrible performance at the PS5 reveal event with the terrible frame rate present in the trailer was kinda' the current status of the game on PS5 as of a few months ago. The thing is, apparently the game runs perfectly on Xbox X, they've been having some troubles getting the frame rate stable on PS5 (which as Sony had a rule to record the PS5 event gameplay on PS5, lead to the weird frame showing in that trailer). But it's running in the RE Engine, and they'll be making more optimizations to take advantage of the game there.

I just hope we get a price and release date soon. Surely they can't go beyond August without announcing those can they?

Microsoft launching a more powerful console at a cheaper price would make things very interesting

Normally I’d say no but considering how they’re both waiting for the other to jump first who can really say

Tomous wrote:Microsoft launching a more powerful console at a cheaper price would make things very interesting

It would make it a little more interesting, probably wouldn’t be enough for them to outsell the PS5 but if they could similar numbers they’d probably see it as a huge success.
