Unless I missed something the Back Compatibility on Xbox One (and X) only works for select games, I'm not sure that's going to change for OG Xbox and 360 games, I can see it working for 100% of Xbox One titles though.

The size of the GPU part on this is making it look like sub £599 isn't likely for this, which is fine if there is a 'Series S' version of the console for around half the price.

I missed out typing ‘select’, I presumed it was known...

I'm not sure everyone knows it, especially when you are talking about OG Xbox backwards compatibility the selection is pretty bare at the moment. There are only 32 original Xbox games in the BC list for Xbox One.

If MS could somehow make the Series X compatible with all OG Xbox games that would be a system seller for me. I've just gone back and softmodded my OG Xbox so I can play games at 480p through a OSSC I've purchased, if next year I could suddenly play all those Xbox games at 16 times the resolution that would be great. Like I said though I'm not holding my breath for it.

When they announced the "last" of the BC games for X1 early last year, they said it was to focus on the goal to get the current BC games that work on the X1, working on the new hardware for day 1. And 100% of the X1 software and hardware working on the new hardware for day 1.

Then they'd go back to bringing additional original and 360 titles to BC for X1 and the new hardware.

What's the point of a second HDMI slot?

About £460. So let's say £500. Seems reasonable to me when compared with the X launch price.

As it stands right now, the series X features, on the back of the hardware, two USB-A ports (of the SuperSpeed variety), ethernet, a single HDMI port, optical audio, and a power connection. There is also another port on the back that may be used for debugging but there wasn’t an agreement on the nature of its functionality. The image at the top of this post shows a basic outline of how those ports appear on the actual hardware.

Also, on the back of the device are openings for air intake as well; all of the ports are located on the lower half of the hardware. Keep in mind, there is also a USB-A port on the front of the console but for now, it looks like Microsoft is sticking with the older USB style port.

I do wish that the series X would use Type-C as that is where the market is headed and is more user-friendly but that’s not currently be used on the early hardware iterations. As always, these ports could change before release but that’s what I am hearing the series X is using today.

It's CES time - exciting stuff for PC users, but not much in the way of megaton next-gen console reveals... so when Xbox Chief Phil Spencer decided to reveal the final physical form factor of the Xbox Series X processor, Rich got excited and put together this quick DF Direct. Is this the biggest console processor we've ever seen?

Not a great design if they really expect some people to place the console horizontally. Half of those vents will be fouled by hanging cables. Bad for airflow, and bad for the cables.

It's being blown out of all proportion. It's just a render of a product that hasn't even been made yet, being used in a promo.

Here's an article about the Series X having a windows mode that will allow PC games to be played?

https://www.ccn.com/xbox-series-x-rumor ... r-console/

Is that plausible?

It can be done. The console would just act like any other PC or laptop it if was to have a Windows-lite OS within it.

I won't be surprised if it doesn't happen but I'd love it to happen as I haven't had a PC for over a decade.

I think they'd have a hell of a support / maintenance challenge if they wanted to put something like that in there as a full on feature.

If it was chucked up as a curio - something to play around with but ultimately un-supported and with no guarantees that it would actually work then I think it could work.

No exclusive XSX games at launch says Matt Booty -

It would be easy to think that Microsoft’s veritable army of developers would be targeting the Series X’s launch day. But Booty agrees with us when we propose that this will be a very different kind of console launch, with first-party games being compatible across all Microsoft’s hardware, existing and new, ending the usual platform reset we’ve seen in the past with such launches.

“As our content comes out over the next year, two years, all of our games, sort of like PC, will play up and down that family of devices,” Booty explains. “We want to make sure that if someone invests in Xbox between now and [Series X] that they feel that they made a good investment and that we’re committed to them with content.”

And that means it’s also unlikely that there will be much pressure, from Microsoft at least, on third-party publishers to turn out hardware-exclusive titles for the relatively small day-one audience of Xbox Series X owners. In short, Microsoft is rewriting the rules of the console launch.

How are some games not going to be hamstrung by this directive? You’re effectively limiting scope and scale because you’ve always got to appeal to the lowest common denominator, in this case the now rotten original Xbox One. You usually see this with third party games in the first couple of years (for example you saw this happen a lot with third party games on Dreamcast, which got fobbed off with PS1 ports like Resident Evil 2, V-Rally 2 and Tomb Raider 4 and 5 and made the system look resolutely last gen when it was quite comfortably able to handle things like Code Veronica, something a PS1 definitely couldn’t do). To do this with first party when you have a system as powerful as the Series X is bizarre to me.

You can scale up and down graphics, framerates and resolutions but you can't scale level design, especially a whole generation apart. A PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 couldn’t run Red Dead Redemption 2 or Spider Man.
