Anyone else slightly disappointed about the lack of any kind of innovation with the controller? It's essentially the same as before with a few very minor refinements.

I guess if it's aint broke, then don't strawberry float it up which is fair enough.

I've always found the Xbox One controller to be very good so just refining it sounds good to me.

With those principles in mind, the Xbox design team developed a next-generation controller to deliver what fans wanted most: improved ergonomics for a wider range of people, better cross-device connectivity, easier sharing, and reduced latency.

https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2020/03/16/ ... ontroller/

I think MS have been held back in some ways on the controller front by all the improvements its already made over this gen (unlike previous gens) and the cross-gen compatibilty the controller needs as well as it being a well regarded controller anyway. Evolution over revolution as new features on controllers tend to be only used by a few games.

Are they including a rechargeable battery/pack this time or does it need to be purchased separately again?

Separate. Although looks like you can use the same one as before.

I bought one of those for One controller. It then proved a whole lot easier to just keep the controller connected via USB, so the battery pack remains inside only as a backup. I guess I'll just keep the pack within that One controller until needed for the new one (probably never).

Get some AA eneloops and you'll save a fortune. You should be able to get a charger and 4x AA kit for £10

IKEA batteries are also meant to be unbranded eneloops but I have no feedback for those having never used them myself

I hope the thumbsticks are more resilient. My Xbox One S controller has recently developed a really annoying drift on the left stick.

If the cable is always connected, you’d be better off taking the battery out, otherwise it’s constantly being topped up to maximum charge, which I believe knackers batteries’ life.

Not at all. The fact that Xbox One controllers will work with Series X is more than enough to cover for any lack of innovation. Will save people a lot of cash.

Bit late for that considering I've been using it that way for probably more than two years at this point, possibly even more. Although I will check to see if the pack is still in there, as I can't remember if I had ever took it out.

Announcing DirectX Developer Day

GDC may have been postponed, but we aren’t going to let that prevent us from bringing the next generation of graphics innovation to the world. Join us this Thursday, March 19, for a virtual DirectX Developer Day on Mixer! The Microsoft DirectX team, along with partners from AMD and NVIDIA, will be streaming a series of talks covering how we’re pushing gaming graphics into the future, introducing exciting new features, showing never-before-seen demos, and doing a deep dive into both PIX and our shader compiler.

Mark your calendar to tune in Thursday for DirectX Developer Day at 5:00 PM GMT, on https://mixer.com/DirectX. The graphics engineering team will be available online to answer your questions in real-time during our first ever Mixer stream!

I’ve been told that the new console doesn’t have an optical port, meaning I can’t use my sound system on it. Not cool.

Yeah, my amp doesn't have 4k passthrough, so although I could use an HDMI for surround sound, I'd only be getting 1080p visuals.

The overall unit cost must really be creeping right up if they're leaving that off.

My system is 10 years old but optical ports are fairly universal surely? It’s not dying out or anything, is it?

I was looking at soundbars the other day, and was considering the Sonos Playbar, but that only has optical, no HDMI at all. It's a really odd omission if the new Xbox doesn't have it.

I'm lucky in that my TV has an optical output so I could do it that way (HDMI to TV then optical to surround sound), although that would add quite a bit of latency I suspect and make some types of games unplayable.
