Are Xbox still releasing two consoles at the same time? Have we heard about the other one recently? Everything just seems to be about the higher powered one.

No news today so I would guess a DF article on Monday to discuss the tech. A bit strange to reveal it without pricing I assume.

I have a feeling both Sony and Microsoft are hoping the other side will announce a price so they can then announce a lower price a few days later. That or they're both putting the final touches to some funky subscription deals.

MS already have a subscription deal, and includes an upgrade to the Series X.

1. All this work in just 2 weeks
2. Hasn't yet adopted Series X exclusive features like Mesh Shading, VRS, Direct Storage etc.
3. MP to be optimized to run at 120fps
4. All features on Ultra vs PC
5. Similar technique to Ray Tracing but SSGI I heard.
6. Cutscenes are now at 4k & 60FPS
7. Loading times decreased by 60% and this is without using any of the advanced SSD features from Series X.

Looks decent if its 0% interest, but I am assuming that there will be an additional one off cost attached to taking the upgrade option after 18 months, which is not really attractive if you want it at the end of November 2020.

Microsoft® DirectX® Raytracing (DXR) adds a new level of graphics realism to video games previously only available in movies, and AMD has collaborated with Microsoft on the design of DXR 1.1, an update to DXR that can deliver better efficiency and performance in many raytracing effects. This video is to give you a taste of the photorealistic realism DXR 1.1 will enable when using hardware-accelerated raytracing on our upcoming AMD RDNA 2 gaming architecture.

Powering Next-Generation Gaming Visuals with AMD RDNA 2 and DirectX 12 Ultimate

AMD has long been a strong supporter of next-generation, low-overhead graphics API technologies like Microsoft DirectX 12 that help take games to a whole new level. Therefore, we’re pleased to announce that in partnership with Microsoft we will provide full support for DirectX 12 Ultimate in our upcoming AMD RDNA 2 gaming architecture.

With this architecture powering both the next generation of AMD Radeon graphics cards and the forthcoming Xbox Series X gaming console, we’ve been working very closely with Microsoft to help move gaming graphics to a new level of photorealism and smoothness thanks to the four key DirectX 12 Ultimate graphics features -- DirectX Raytracing (DXR), Variable Rate Shading (VRS), Mesh Shaders, and Sampler Feedback.

“Microsoft and AMD worked closely on the development of the DirectX 12 Ultimate feature set to ensure a great experience with AMD RDNA 2 architecture”
– Bryan Langley, Graphics Group Program Manager, Microsoft

DXR adds a new level of graphics realism to video games previously only available in movies, and AMD has collaborated with Microsoft on the design of DXR 1.1, an update to DXR that can deliver better efficiency and performance in many raytracing effects.

Support for hardware-accelerated DXR 1.1 raytracing with AMD RDNA 2 architecture will allow both PC and console gamers to experience stunning, next-level visuals in games that support DirectX 12 Ultimate. To give you a taste of the photorealistic realism DXR raytracing will enable we’ve put together a preview of what you can expect:

With the announcement of DirectX 12 Ultimate, Microsoft is driving the next generation of games on both console and PC to new heights of realism and AMD is excited to be an integral part of this effort. With this new common graphics standard for both PC and consoles, gamers can expect to see advanced effects like raytracing come to more games sooner. In addition, DirectX 12 Ultimate will make developers’ lives easier, allowing them to develop games using the same common graphics API and graphics architecture for both PCs and consoles.

Announcing DirectX 12 Ultimate

From the team that has brought PC and Console gamers the latest in graphics innovation for nearly 25 years, we are beyond pleased to bring gamers DirectX 12 Ultimate, the culmination of the best graphics technology we’ve ever introduced in an unprecedented alignment between PC and Xbox Series X.

When gamers purchase PC graphics hardware with the DX12 Ultimate logo or an Xbox Series X, they can do so with the confidence that their hardware is guaranteed to support ALL next generation graphics hardware features, including DirectX Raytracing, Variable Rate Shading, Mesh Shaders and Sampler Feedback. This mark of quality ensures stellar “future-proof” feature support for next generation games!

Ultimate Graphics Innovation

Microsoft’s Game Stack exists to bring developers the tools they need to create bold, immersive game experiences, and DX12 Ultimate is the ideal tool to amplify gaming graphics. DX12 Ultimate is the result of continual investment in the DirectX 12 platform made over the last five years to ensure that Xbox and Windows 10 remain at the very pinnacle of graphics technology. To further empower game developers to create games with stunning visuals, we enhanced features that are already beginning to transform gaming such as DirectX Raytracing and Variable Rate Shading, and have added new major features such as Mesh Shaders and Sampler Feedback.

Together, these features represent many years of innovation from Microsoft and our partners in the hardware industry. DX12 Ultimate brings them all together in one common bundle, providing developers with a single key to unlock next generation graphics on PC and Xbox Series X.

Of course, even the most powerful features are of limited use without the tools necessary to fully exploit them, so we are pleased to announce that our industry-leading PIX graphics optimization tool and our open-source HLSL compiler will provide game developers with the ability to squeeze every last drop of performance out of an entire ecosystem of DX12 Ultimate hardware.

An Additive Benefit

DirectX12 Ultimate is fundamentally an additive initiative that provides gamers with assurance that their hardware meets the highest bar for feature support in next-generation games.

It is very important to note that DX12 Ultimate will not impact game compatibility with existing hardware which does not support the entire breath of DX12 Ultimate features. In fact, next-generation games which use DX12 Ultimate features will continue to run on non-DX12 Ultimate hardware. Though such hardware won’t provide the visual benefits of the new features, it can still provide a very compelling gaming experience on next generation games, depending on the specifics of the hardware.

The PC ecosystem encompasses a broad variety of hardware and DX12 Ultimate makes that ecosystem strictly better with no adverse effect on hardware which does not support DX12 Ultimate!

Amplifying a Virtuous Cycle

As any gamer would attest, there are few higher virtues than the appreciation of a well-crafted and beautiful game. DX12 Ultimate creates unprecedented opportunities for the entire gaming ecosystem, creating a self-reinforcing virtuous cycle that results in better gaming experiences!

The cycle below describes the general graphics improvement process in games that has occurred for many years. As new hardware (or a new console generation) slowly reaches market saturation, the number of addressable sockets with next-generation capable graphics features increases. As the number of sockets with these features increases, the number of game studios willing to adopt the new features likewise increases, until finally, market saturation of hardware occurs, and most game studios adopt the features.

Prior to DX12 Ultimate, there was limited overlap between these two cycles. Even when hardware was similar, the software interfaces were quite dissimilar, discouraging aligned adoption by developers.

By unifying the graphics platform across PC and Xbox Series X, DX12 Ultimate serves as a force multiplier for the entire gaming ecosystem. No longer do the cycles operate independently! Instead, they now combine synergistically: when Xbox Series X releases, there will already be many millions of DX12 Ultimate PC graphics cards in the world with the same feature set, catalyzing a rapid adoption of new features, and when Xbox Series X brings a wave of new console gamers, PC will likewise benefit from this vast surge of new DX12 Ultimate capable hardware!

The result? An adrenaline shot to new feature adoption, groundbreaking graphics in the hands of gamers more quickly than ever before!

Every single game you can run on an Xbox One will also run on Xbox Series X. They will also run better by default. Just like Xbox One --> Xbox One X. Some may get even further enhancements like automatic HDR or resolution bumps, depending on what the compatibility team is able to pull off.

No "boost mode", no variability. Everything just works, and works better. Every back-compat original Xbox and Xbox 360 game, and every single Xbox One game.

All of the controllers you bought for your Xbox One will also work on Xbox Series X, and will get a firmware update to take advantage of dynamic latency input too

Personally holding off on play Cyberpunk, Control & Fallen Order until I can play them on XSX.

So every single game will work and work better, just as it should be.

Hard to believe that Sony were in many ways pioneers with the PS1 backwards compatibility in the PS2 and yet now they have fallen so far behind. The idea that games you buy are tied to a single iteration of hardware is just ridiculously archaic at this point.

Surely lockhart will be a bad idea when it comes to designing games for the lowest common denominator? It would be better for microsoft to release the series x at a lower pricepoint, say £450. I was looking at a video showing the off the shelf price of the tech inside it and it goes beyond £1000! I know economies of scale come into play here, but still, i cannot see this costing less that £800 to actually manufacture including r&d costs.

I think Lock heart should be able to play Series X games at 1080p 30fps... at least that’s the rumours, it’ll have an SSD and Zen CPU so will be a jump up slightly from X1X.

I agree with you though, I hope it’s powerful enoufh to not hold Series X back.

Hot on the heels of Sony’s BC fumble, Microsoft today has issued their own clarification...

Since the Xbox Series X was first revealed, Microsoft has suggested that it will play every single Xbox One game. Today, it seemed to walk back this claim. Issuing a correction to a tweet (now deleted) made earlier this morning that claimed the next-gen console will play every Xbox One game, the official Xbox Twitter account noted that for now it can only confirm 1000s of games will be playable at launch.
