- The Ascent only confirmed for Xbox One and Xbox Series X so far
- Call of the Sea is Xbox console exclusive and launching on Xbox Game Pass

I wonder why so many games are still not using HDR?

I'm not sure that's the right use of N/A there either. I guess they didn't want big red X's.

I must admit that I find it rather annoying that a game I backed on Kickstater is now going to be a part of Game Pass, simply because I needn't have bothered backing it. Eugh.

Out of interest, which game are you referring to?

Has Microsoft said anything about the future of backwards compatibility for Series X? I think the last I heard the BC team were working to make sure everything that was BC on XBone would run on Series X, will they continue to work on bringing more 360/OG Xbox after this? Any plans to future improve how BC games run on the new hardware?

Scorn.

I can completely understand why they may have done this, it could mean more money to work with the game and stuff, it's just. I don't know, I feel like I've backed something when I had no need to now. You know what I mean?

No real details yet other than adding HDR to games which didn't have it & "Games also benefit from the full CPU and GPU clocks of Series X" (Unlike the XB1X which was only 50%), maybe more details at the June event -

Players will see the benefits of the improved hardware of Xbox Series X for backwards compatible games, including improved boot and load times, more stable frame rates, higher resolutions and improved image quality. The Compatibility team is also continuing to create entirely new techniques and innovation that we can use to further enhance the existing catalog of games when running on Xbox Series X.

https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2020/03/16/ ... es-x-tech/

Further goodies were to come - and owners of HDR screens are going to love the second key feature I saw. We got to see the Xbox One X enhanced version of Halo 5 operating with a very convincing HDR implementation, even though 343 Industries never shipped the game with HDR support. Microsoft ATG principal software engineer Claude Marais showed us how a machine learning algorithm using Gears 5's state-of-the-art HDR implementation is able to infer a full HDR implementation from SDR content on any back-compat title. It's not fake HDR either, Marais rolled out a heatmap mode showing peak brightness for every on-screen element, clearly demonstrating that highlights were well beyond the SDR range.

"It can be applied to all games theoretically, technically, I guess we're still working through user experiences and things like that but this is a technical demo," revealed Marais. "So this [Halo 5] is four years old, right, so let's go to the extreme and jump to a game that is 19, 20 years old right now - and that is Fusion Frenzy. Back then there's nothing known about HDR, no-one knew about HDR things. Games just used 8-bit back buffers."

This was a show-stopping moment. It was indeed Fusion Frenzy - an original Xbox title - running with its usual 16x resolution multiplier via back-compat, but this time presented with highly convincing, perceptibly real HDR. The key point is that this is proposed as a system-level feature for Xbox Series X, which should apply to all compatible games that don't have their own bespoke HDR modes - and as Marais demonstrated, it extends across the entire Xbox library.

"But you can think of other things that we could do," Marias adds. "Let's look at accessibility. If you have people that cannot read well or see well, you probably want to enhance contrast when there's a lot of text on-screen. We can easily do that. We talked to someone that's colourblind this morning and that's a great example. We just switch on the LUT and we can change colours for them to more easily experience the announcement there."

It's clear that there's a lot of love for the Xbox library and that the back-compat team are hugely excited about what they do. "Hopefully you realise that we are still quite passionate about this," says Peggy Lo. "It's a very personal project for a lot of us and we are committed to keep doing this and making all your games look best on Series X."

This is interesting stuff, I love that they have a team dedicated to this kind of stuff. Phil has done some great things with Xbox since he took over and this is one of them.

Now that we're at about the 6 month point before launch when do you guys expect pre-orders to be started?

I can't see it being much longer as they'll want to give people time to save for what is a hefty chunk of change for an entertainment purchase.

I think 3 months before release. But won't people be saving anyway? I mean you don't need an official date to start setting money aside.

Haha, I thought that too. Fine to say N/A for Smart Delivery if a game isn’t going to be released on XB1, but otherwise it’s disingenuous. How are 4K and HDR not applicable to anything?! They should have just left a gap if they didn’t want to draw attention.

At a guess I'd say at the June events but maybe July event for MS.

Michael Pachter's reappeared...

Speaking on a recent live episode of Geoff Keighley’s Bonus Round , Michael Pachter suggests that Microsoft could consider taking a significant loss on its next generation console in order to launch it at $400.

Launching at this price point could potentially allow Microsoft's console to undercut its main competition—Sony’s PS5—which, Pachter points out during the episode, is rumored to have a launch price closer to $500.

It’s a bold strategy but according to Pachter “Microsoft has a big balance sheet” which means that “If they want to cut the price by $100, just price below and subsidise the first 10 million, they will."

As a result, Pachter believes that Microsoft is waiting for Sony to "blink first, and then they’ll reveal the price and launch date. It’s going to be Holiday, so very likely sometime in November and very likely $400.”

Fellow guest on the episode Peter Moore, who has previously held prominent roles at Sega, Xbox and EA before becoming CEO of Liverpool F.C., agreed with Pachter’s view:

“What both companies are going through right now is how much we can afford to lose in the first 12 to 18 months? What is our attach rate of software to hardware? What is our revenue we can drive from services? What are we willing to do in year 1, 2 and 3 to hit 10 million?”

So what makes it the "world's most powerful console"?

I can't see Sony releasing something that isn't at least on par with it. When it comes down to it anyway, how far can graphics go? I don't think anything shown by either company will blow anyone's head off. A bit shinier and smoother but nothing to make a mess in one's underwear.

Both companies paid AMD to handle the CPU and GPU (as far as I know) so both companies will likely have a pretty good idea of what the other is up to and I think one could claim to have the most powerful machine.
Sony seems to have gone with spending more on faster storage rather than pure power so we'll have to see which direction actually has more impact during the next few years.

There's also the debate about if the public actually cares about the "most powerful console" claim anymore so that could also be why Sony hasn't been bothered about trying to refute the claim.

It’s technically more powerful in both GPU and CPU. Opinions gonna opinion but from a factual standpoint, it is more Powerful.

But that really stopped mattering a generation or two ago, the games look barely any better. Whats the point of going all in on this sales tactic?

Xbox Series X is never going to get people who left the brand to come back. Theres nothing to see here unless Sony really mess up.

As always it will depend on the games.
If Microsoft lets the 15 studios make the games they want without interference they may make some stunning games and convince people to choose Xbox.

Because there’s a significant audience there that wants the highest spec console and wants to play the best version of multi platform console games available.

And I dunno, at a generational change, people would be more inclined to change brands than ever. The appeal of GamePass (or PSNow) can be strong, but not strong enough to switch mid-generation. And backwards compatibility makes a change in platform a more valuable prospect than sticking with the same brand, if you look at it through the lens of what buying the machine lets you do that you couldn’t before.
