A price would be nice, at least that way the pricing (maybe a launch date as well?) would be out of the way before their first party games showcase in July that way.

Obviously still waiting on a release date or a price but the pre order page seems to have gone live for the Xbox Series X over the last few hours, maybe we'll get a date/price at their June event?

Shinobi says July event -

Imagine asking people for their money before actually showing any games.

Nah.

Xbox Series X: The Most Powerful and Compatible Next-Gen Console with Thousands of Games at Launch

With more than 100,000 hours of play testing already completed, thousands of games are already playable on Xbox Series X today, from the biggest blockbusters to cult classics and fan favorites. Many of us in Team Xbox play on the Xbox Series X daily as our primary console and switching between generations is seamless. By the time we launch this holiday, the team will have spent well over 200,000 hours ensuring your game library is ready for you to jump in immediately.

All Games Play Better on Xbox Series X

Not only should gamers be able to play all of these games from the past, but they should play better than ever before. Backwards compatible games run natively on the Xbox Series X hardware, running with the full power of the CPU, GPU and the SSD. No boost mode, no downclocking, the full power of the Xbox Series X for each and every backward compatible game. This means that all titles run at the peak performance that they were originally designed for, many times even higher performance than the games saw on their original launch platform, resulting in higher and more steady framerates and rendering at their maximum resolution and visual quality. Backwards compatible titles also see significant reductions in in-game load times from the massive leap in performance from our custom NVME SSD which powers the Xbox Velocity Architecture. As I play through my personal backlog as part of our internal testing, all of the incredible games from Xbox One and earlier play best on Xbox Series X.

The team was not content to just rely on the increased hardware performance to improve your playing experience. The team developed new platform level capabilities to ensure all of your games continue to get even better. In partnership with the Xbox Advanced Technology Group, Xbox Series X delivers a new, innovative HDR reconstruction technique which enables the platform to automatically add HDR support to games. As this technique is handled by the platform itself, it allows us to enable HDR with zero impact to the game’s performance and we can also apply it to Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles developed almost 20 years ago, well before the existence of HDR.

All of these advances happen at the platform level and require no additional work from title developers.

The compatibility team has invented brand new techniques that enable even more titles to run at higher resolutions and image quality while still respecting the artistic intent and vision of the original creators. We are also creating whole new classes of innovations including the ability to double the frame rate of a select set of titles from 30 fps to 60 fps or 60 fps to 120 fps.

The team also continues to listen to feedback from the community on additional titles you would like to see added to the compatibility program.

Interesting! I will peruse the details fully later this afternoon but that tweet is a direct swipe at the Mark Cerny's approach to backwards compatibility on PS5, saying no boost mode and no downclocking! I recall the PS4 Pro reveal and Cerny discussing the issues of making it compatible with the launch PS4 so if i recall correctly he made the GPU exactly double the size of the launch PS4 so that if a game didn't have a Pro software patch than the GPU power could be reduced to half power for full compatibility which, apparently, is a clumsy solution.

Now that's a great commitment to Backwards Compatibility. Native support for everything should make everything run smoother. I might just be convinced to grab one at launch even if I don't even get one single Series X game.

Putting Sony's piss-poor BC efforts to shame.

I don't understand why Sony appears to be struggling with BC in a way that MS clearly aren't.

Sony take a hardware approach and MS use emulation?

I think....

That is a hell of a commitment to backwards compatibility, even for relatively new players you can buy some games from the original Xbox on their store can't you? So even for people who might be buying their first Xbox thy can still have a great experience playing older games, some of which will have HDR and double the framerate. Sounds great, what is Sony's stance so far? Just PS4 games?

It’s weird how it was a big thing for them on the PS3 and Vita, but they weren’t arsed about it on PS4. Always found it strange how they never get the deserved amount of criticism for this compared to Nintendo who actually make some effort with it.

This is the main reason why I bought the Xbox One and it will be the main reason why I buy a Series X. The prospect of playing older games in higher resolutions and framerates (permitting game code) is really something to look forward to. I can't wait to give stuff like Doom 2016 a go on this.

Unfortunately. PS1 and PS2 would be a piece of piss. And with some effort, we've already seen over the years what can be achieved when PS1 games are cleaned up even slightly (Gran Turismo 2 or Ridge Racer 4 on Dreamcast for example) and how PS2/Xbox games can look on modern hardware (Splinter Cell Chaos Theory on Xbox One X).

Oh  Still, if I do opt for a Series X over a PS5 then they'd be getting bought regardless!

Just looked at Chaos Theory and it looks rather good on a One X, you'd have thought the PS5 would have enough power to easily run PS1-3 games though if Sony wanted it to.
