PS4 system architect Mark Cerny didn't see the design of the console until it was revealed to the public on Sony's E3 stage in 2013. This meant he created the hardware and then designers found a box to put it in! With PS5 Digital Foundry during their PS5 reveal video speculate that it has multiple vents around the device. Cerny spoke during his Road to PS5 talk about variable frequencies that maintain a steady power draw and thus constant temperature, suggests he would have been part of the design process of the PS5 chassis.

But to be clear, the PS4 doesn't have an overheating problem, it has fans that during a demanding game run at maximum speed to maintain a safe temperature, but this causes a noise problem.

I have no idea about the engineering concerns but the PS4 looks miles better than the PS5.

I like the latest Xbox design ethos, the X1S, X1X and XSX all have different looks but enough similarities that it's clear they're from the same range.

If Cerny had created the system and picked the parts from manufacturers I would guess he'd have a pretty solid idea of what it would look like even if he never looked at the final design. There's only so many ways they can all be fit together so I doubt he was all that shocked.

Developers making Xbox Series X games will learn to address PS5’s SSD advantage, says ex-Xbox lead

Developers working on multiplatform games will find a way to get around Xbox Series X’s relatively slower SSD compared to PS5’s.

Microsoft’s William Stillwell, who currently manages the company’s Mixed Reality program, spent years at Xbox working on backwards compatibility, xCloud, and Xbox platform services.

Stillwell was recently a guest on the Iron Lords Podcast, where he was asked about the PS5’s impressive SSD tech, how faster it is compared to Xbox Series X’s solution, and whether it’ll even matter. Although the veteran developer pointed out that he doesn’t speak for the entire company, he has an idea about how this disparity will be handled.

“I’ll say two things with that. One, I understand that it’s a marketing point and a high point – and I think I said in the last podcast we did, I’m really impressed with what they’ve done in the architecture with their drive and I think they’ll be able to do really cool stuff with it,” said Stillwell.

“I also don’t think it’s as impressive over what you’ll be able to do [with Xbox Series X] and so I have high confidence in that team. I will also say – look, I reserve the right to wake up smarter tomorrow and someone may prove me wrong and we’ll learn. The one thing I have learned is [to] never underestimate game developers’ [ability] to take advantage of something and work around it, but that works on both sides.

“So the ability of a game developer to look and say, ‘Ok, I am building this game and I wanna have seamless transition with no loading screens on [PS5], but I am also gonna wanna sell on Xbox, what am I gonna do to manage that kinda thing?’

“Like, that will be the tricks and the techniques, so – I am just making this up – maybe there are elevators in the Xbox Series X version and not on the [PS5] version. I don’t know yet how they’re gonna address it, but they’ll learn to address it and they will figure out ways to work around it.”

I remember the original Splinter Cell games where the Xbox and PC versions were different to the GameCube and PS2 in terms of overall level design.

Xbox Series Xscalators.

I’ll wait to reserve judgement on the SSD, however, I only think it’ll make a practical difference in games doing a Rachet and Clank style total switch between stages within seconds. Both consoles will have the throughput to transition from, say, interior to exterior in an RPG pretty seamlessly. XSX will likely do this with higher fidelity so the trade off will be largely mute.

Time will tell just how much of a difference there will be in the (real world usage) SSD speeds and what impact it has on the games themselves, for third parties I can’t see there being huge differences really, as we’ve seen with The Witcher 3 on the Switch, that’s the exact same game as the PC/PS4/Xbox One got on considerably less powerful hardware so for two consoles that are closer I don’t think there’ll be huge differences between a Series X and a PS5 version of a game. I mean it’s not like the SSD in the Series X is slow is it?

For some first party games they may take full advantage of it like Ratchet and Clank seems to be doing.

Jez Cordon of Window Central says the Lockhart won't have a disc drive - 1hr13mins - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBY4YftCl1k

Recently, Microsoft filed a new trademark for the ‘Xbox Series’ only without the X. This could mean that there are other variants of the next-gen console which strongly hints at the Series S possibility that we’ve been hearing a lot about in the past.

Obviously, this could also mean that they just wanted to trademark Xbox Series as a separate name for their next-gen console. But, considering the recent reports, it’s highly possible that we’ll be hearing about this mystery next-gen console very soon.

We're going to be hearing a LOT about variable rate shading as we transition into the next generation console era. But what is it? What are its strengths and weaknesses? Is it really a game-changer in terms of more efficient graphics rendering? Alex Battaglia assesses the technology based on two games we've seen using it so far... and talks about how it could be used in future.

VRS is on XSX but the PS5 hasn't mentioned it yet and Digital Foundry saw none of it in the games the other day.

Interesting video from DF. I knew about VRS but was not aware it could achieve those kind of performance improvements. IMO even 10% improvement in performance from a GPU is nothing to sniff at, especially at the lower end where the gains are more noticeable.

I’d never even heard of VRS till watching that video, interesting stuff though.

Re the Lockhart model (or Series S as a lot of people seem to be calling it), losing the disc drive like the digital PS5 would make sense, it’s meant to be the cheapest possible way to enter the next generation of gaming, alongside the less powerful GPU I’d expect a slightly smaller SSD, less RAM as well to try and make it as cheap as possible. How cheap is the question though, they’ll probably want to undercut Sony’s cheaper model by a decent chunk.

Losing a disc drive does not make much sense if your aim is just to cut production costs as they are not that expensive to include, especially if you are Sony and own the license, so I reckon they are only saving like $20 by not having one on the DE. It does make sense if your aim is funnel more people into downloading games from your online store, where margins are significantly higher. For that reason I expect the PS5 DE to be marked down my more than the cost of the disk drive to incentivise the move.

Every little helps though

With the cheaper model, Microsoft will probably throw in 3 months of Game Pass Ultimate to try and get people in the ecosystem.

If the OS is the same piece of gooseberry fool as the Xbone then they’ve lost a sale, until they sort that crapola out.

Has it changed much over the past year or so? The last time I used it I never had a problem.

They moved the categories from going across the screen horizontally to vertically. That’s it.*

Some people just can’t handle change. Neneh Cherry did a song about that attitude.

Here at Xbox, we’re building the future of gaming by putting players first and ensuring that you are at the center and in control of your gaming experience. Whether you’re exploring an expansive library of Xbox Game Pass titles with more than 10 million of your fellow gamers or taking your gaming on the go with Project xCloud, it’s clear that the future of gaming is brighter than ever.

Nowhere is that more evident than with Xbox Series X, our fastest, most powerful console ever. Not only will Xbox Series X set a new bar for performance, speed and compatibility, it will empower the world’s greatest developers to create games that launch us into the future of gaming. Putting players first also means introducing a host of new features and technologies to improve their experience.

One of the most exciting of the technologies we’re introducing with Xbox Series X is Smart Delivery, which will ensure that you always play the best version of the games you own for your console, across generations. This technology is available for all developers, and all Xbox Game Studios titles that are Optimized for Xbox Series X, including Halo Infinite, will support Smart Delivery.

But what does that mean for you, the player? Well, it means that if you purchase the Xbox One version of a supported title, we will deliver the best version of it to your Xbox One, as usual. If you decide to jump into the next generation with Xbox Series X, we will automatically provide the Xbox Series X version of the game at no additional cost when it becomes available. You won’t need to do anything in terms of choosing a version to download. We’ll take care of all of that. And it’s not just limited to games that you purchase digitally; physical discs of Xbox games can also support Smart Delivery if the developer or publisher decides to implement it.

Below are a few different scenarios in which Smart Delivery will work across generations with the games and consoles you own now and those you may own in the future. Smart Delivery will ensure that only the best version of the game will be installed on your hard drive, so you don’t have to manage your storage space:

- If you own Gears 5 or are loving it via Xbox Game Pass now, you can play it today on Xbox One. Then, if you pick up an Xbox Series X this holiday, all it takes is a push of a button to download it and you’ll have the Optimized version of Gears 5 – available on day 1 at launch with the console – at your fingertips.

- When Halo Infinite launches alongside Xbox Series X and Xbox One this holiday, you only have to buy the game once and you’ll get the best version for whichever console you own, or both. If you pick up Xbox Series X for your living room, Smart Delivery will recognize that and deliver you the Optimized version there. If you decide to move your existing Xbox One to a bedroom or the office, Smart Delivery will recognize that too and deliver that version when you’re playing on Xbox One.

- Lastly, some new and existing Xbox One titles will be Optimizing their games after the Xbox Series X launches. For example, if you buy Cyberpunk 2077 when it launches on September 17, you’ll be set to explore Night City on Xbox One. If you pick up Xbox Series X at launch this holiday, you can play it there too in compatibility mode picking up exactly where you left off. Then, when CD PROJEKT RED delivers an Xbox Series X Optimized version of Cyberpunk 2077, you’ll automatically get upgraded once it’s available at no additional cost.

We’re also happy to confirm that Smart Delivery will be enabled for Xbox Game Pass titles that leverage it. Outside of our Xbox Game Studios titles, it will be up to the individual developer to determine whether they take advantage of Smart Delivery.

As was the case with our current backwards compatible titles, you won’t have to worry about losing any progress either. Thanks to our commitment to compatibility across generations, you can be assured that when you purchase a game on Xbox One today, your game library, progression and entire gaming legacy moves forward with you if you jump into the next generation with Xbox Series X.

But what about the games? Below you’ll find the initial list of new and existing titles that will be Optimized for Xbox Series X and confirmed to support Smart Delivery. Please note: this is in addition to the thousands of games you’ll be able to bring with you to Xbox Series X via back compatibility on day one. As this list grows in the weeks and months leading up to the Xbox Series X launch, we’ll keep it updated to reflect any additions.

Halo Infinite
Cyberpunk 2077
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
Destiny 2
DiRT 5
Scarlet Nexus
Chorus
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2
Yakuza: Like a Dragon
The Ascent
Call of the Sea
Gears 5
Second Extinction
Metal: Hellslinger

We hope this gave you a better idea of what we’ve got planned for Smart Delivery and how this new technology will ensure that the player is at the center of the gaming experience. We’ll be sharing more on Smart Delivery and adding titles to the list above in the coming months.
