I'm guessing the answer to the following question is the obvious one but here goes -

If i set my display output to 120hz @ 1080 (LG B8), i will never see a native or supersampled 4K image right on any game will I? The console gpu is actually outputting the reduced reoslution all the time, irrespective of whether the game has a high frame rate option to actualy make use of the trade off?

I don't QUITE understand the question but the Series S and X will super sample everything to fit whatever your TV displays. If your output is 1080p it will supersample 4K or 1440p down to that. If a game downgrades it's resolution to suit 120hz that's on a game by game basis but the Xbox will supersample down any resolution higher than you're displaying and upscale up it's resolution if the resolution is lower.

TL:DR It will upscale and downscale resolutions to fit your output.

Thanks for that (i knew you would be the one to reply). Unfortunatly i dont quite understand the answer (its me, not you etc).

I will give a very specific example, and if you should feel inclined to reply with what i will "get", great ;)

Background - TV is 120hz @ 1080p, 60hz @ 4k.

If i have my Series X outputting in 60hz 4K mode and boot Ori and the Will of the Wisps, im guessing i wont see the option for the 120fps mode? Or it wont be selectable?

If i go into the dash and set the Series X to output 120hz @ 1080p, i assume i will be able to play the 120hz mode, but the "quality mode" (6k version) wont be available? Or if it is it will only be displayed @1080p (but upscaled by thr TV) until i go into the dash and change my settings back to 4K.

If i then play Jedi Fallen Order (no 120fps mode, just performance and quality), im guessing i wont see any visual difference when i toggle between the 4k and 1080p mode. Because the xbox is downsampling from 4k to 1080p before reaching the TV.

So the only way to see native 4k output on my screen would be to play a game that is native 4k (obviously) and also have my Series X in 4k @ 60 mode?

As im typing this its pretty obvious that that must be the case  .

Well yes, this will be the case.

I don't like how the 120hz is a toggle on Xbox rather than in game, I understand why but it'd be nice if it dynamically adjusted per game.

EXACTLY! I’m guessing there must be a technical reason for it? Seems like it just makes life harder for those of us without HDMI 2.1.

Anyway, thanks for the reply / confirmation.

Up to you, how much you’re willing to restrict that. Plus, of course, heat won’t radiate from the sides if it’s enclosed. It’s not all about the vents.

If there's any heat on the side panels then you have bigger worries than having 4-6" around all the sides. All the heat is in the middle and then drawn out through the wind tunnel and out the top (or side if you have it horizontal).

Going back to this point, now I’ve had chance to use it a bit. As I expected, there clearly is heat radiating from the sides, especially when it’s running a demanding game. Or is it just mine? Either way, I’m glad I’ve not enclosed it.

Those sales are pretty low, if that's the same six day launch window for all four. Guess there must be desperate shortages pretty much everywhere, and MS couldn't manufacture anywhere near enough to meet demand.

Don't think it's come back in stock over here. Which is very fortunate, as I'd be tempted to through absolutely all logic out the window, and buy an X, trading my UK S in (sneakily swapping the power cable out.

I am more than happy with my S though, it's a great little machine. I actually prefer how the S looks, and the white colouring. It's deathly quiet too.

Spent the evening playing the original Halo on the MCC. What's the general opinion on the visuals, do people prefer the Anniversary or original visuals? I probably prefer the latter, especially outdoors. The revamped ones just seem way too bright at times, losing some of the atmosphere. Plus they add more modern details and textures, that tends too take away from the originals cold,, sleek alien aesthetics.

Up to the Silent Cartographer anyway. It's still absolutely fantastic, for a game that is approaching its 20th birthday.

I've always been happy with games on discs, but this gives me the urge to go all digital than I've never had before. Might have to add price alerts for a bunch of games I already have on disc.

I like some of the additional details on the Pillar of Autumn but dark areas looked a lot brighter compared to the old visuals for sure. The marines look quite chubby in the revamp to me and Keyes looks completely wrong, what's going on with his mouth? I find myself flicking back to the old visuals quite a lot.

Looking up at the Halo I think it looks significantly better in the old graphics, the revamped Halo is too clouded over - I really prefer being able to clearly see the land masses and oceans on the Halo stretching up into the sky.

But yes, it still plays really well! I had another go at Perfect Dark Zero on my new Xbox too and it plays like an absolute dog in comparison

So I changed my Xbox output to 120hz 1080p and then 60hz 1080p. When I swapped between resolution and performance mode on Fallen Order (1080p vs 1440p) I could still see exactly the same resolution bump as if I had left the X at 60hz 4K.
I don’t understand. Is the Xbox sending the signal 1080p (in my first examples) and then be upscaled by the TV back to 4K? Which is not as good as native but not apparent to my eyes?
Genuinely confused now. What would it take for me to only see a 1080p image (so the image quality is identical when swapping between quality and performance mode)? Disabling the 4K setting in my HDMI ports? Not that I want to have a degraded image, I’m just not sure why I can’t see any difference when I change the settings on the Series X dash.

Occasionally I think about trying to grab a PS5 on release, but then I ask myself if I would really buy any of the upcoming games over the supply available to me for “free” with Game Pass. For me that answer is no. Multiply by 5 is you did not have a 1X (I do).

But which ever you get, you will be in for a great time.

Well, it'll be a while till you can find either, probably, so might as well chill till spring and see what people are talking about then. Early days for both, anyway.

I don't want to sell you anything. The games you like are the games you like. If you're wedded to the exclusives on one or the other already, probably just get that one.

If not, given most other big games feature on both, the best console for you will just be the one you play most. The Xbox has surpassed my expectations so far, because, and this is hard to explain, everything just feels so joined up.

I've switched this on multiple times every day, and it's a joy every time. I'd have always put myself in the playstation camp every time till now, as well, this has won me over.

So, I think this will do me for the next few years at least, maybe get a PS5 as well in a few years, if there are any exclusives I want to play enough. Depends what you're after, though

So, I've now gotten a 4k TV just because of this, and wow. Even with the series S my socks are blown right off, well past my shoes, and into someone else's laundry basket. I owe this machine for dragging me into the modern world.

Fine, I've mainly been playing Gta5 and watching the Mandalorian, but this is amazing. If I put my glasses on too, my socks might as well be in Jupiter.

One thing I have noticed is that very occasionally if I switch it on with the external drive attached, it crashes a bit. So, I keep that unplugged till I need to transfer games around.

But, I'm having a ball with this machine so far! Even realising Perfect Dark Zero is indeed a load of old bum isn't a disappointment, because I can just download something else instead, or crash through some rain in FH4. Or play Kameo.

Fine, I'm playing Peggle as well. And there is so much yet to explore! I hardly know where to start!

I think the main reason to get this over PS5 is GamePass, its amazing how much bang for your buck you can get out of GamePass

GamePass is what did it for me. Moving to XSX from PS4.

Yep, getting a console on launch and instantly having 60 games I could stick in my "To Play" list is the big draw. Got Gamepass for 3 years and considering I have the Switch and PS4, that's probably going to keep me busy.

That's not even counting the MS/Bethesda stuff that will come in the future too. Ridiculous.

I had a go on Battlefield 4 and Operation Locker has never looked so smooth.
It's a bit odd being a level 1 medic again as I played on PS4 before but it's buttery smooth.

Pity I'm still gooseberry fool at Battlefield 4 though :slol: .
Getting points by lobbing health kits at people never gets old though.
