The Xbox 360's successor will likely debut at E3 2012, with Timesplitters 4 among the titles in development for the new machine, according to a new report.

A "high-ranking" source within developer Crytek let the news slip to VideoGamer. Although the insider didn't confirm system specs, they revealed that the Crysis studio is using DirectX 11 in development.

The source expects Microsoft to unveil and subsequently launch its new machine ahead of Sony, though the studio is also investing resources in PlayStation 4 development.

Crytek is hoping that Timesplitters 4 will be seen as an early visual benchmark for the platform.

First announced by developer Free Radical back in 2007, the FPS sequel was thought to be dead and buried when the studio went into administration in 2009. However, Crytek, who bought up what was left of the Nottingham-based outfit, has seemingly resuscitated the game.

Built using CryEngine 3, it'll apparently focus on branching paths, exploration and sandbox gameplay.

Both Microsoft and Crytek have declined to comment on the story.

That would be better though, right?

XBOX720 plus Halo 4 = MEGATON.

Was Halo 4 ever confirmed as a 360 title?

Don introduced it as a new Xbox 360 trilogy, but that didn't make much sense if they're releasing them every 2 years as that would take us into 2016 :P

2012 reveal and a 2013 release would probably make sense.

Xbox 720 and the return of Timesplitters? Sounds a bit too unlikely to me.

So is this a definite confirmation we're finally getting a sequel? Maybe I'm getting my hopes up for what is merely speculation.

Should be interesting to see if all support of the 360 dries up like it did for the original Xbox, or whether MS handle things better this time.

This isn't confirmation of anything. It's a guy saying some nebulous person at Crytek apparently told him. Sounds like a fanboy trying to make up gooseberry fool because he knows the E3 showing this year was atrocious.

There will be no new Xbox at E3 next year.

How can you be any more certain of that throwaway statement than it actually appearing there?

Because it doesn't make sense for Microsoft to throw all this money at Kinect, only to immediately move on. Yes, they could make the next Xbox Kinect compatible, but they still spent a lot of R&D time and money that didn't go towards developing a new console. The way I see it, Microsoft are in it for the long haul with the 360.

No Timesplitters for this generation? :(

I was hoping this generation would last until at least 2014, but colour me interested anyway.

Just beacuse Nextbox is at E3 next year it doesn't mean it will see release that year, it will probably be a showreel of some amazing footage to make Wii U look dated before it even launches, a bit like how Sony undermined Dreamcast.

Hope we hear more soon though :)

If MS & Sony go down the bullshots route, I wonder if the press will go for it again.

"OH MY GOD, LOOK AT THOSE GRAPHICS!"

Yeah, but they're not real.

Kinect has already done its job of extending the generation for MS though - the 360 will be 7 by late 2012, which is 3 years longer than the original Xbox was around. They can also take everything they've learned with Kinect this gen and make better Kinect games for the next Xbox.

They'll probably do what Sony did to ruin the 360 launch at E3 05 and release some bullshots with a box to undermine Wii U.

Kinect is designed to prolong the 360 to the point where the next console can enter the market as less of a loss leader. It's unlikely that Microsoft have only been working on getting Kinect out the door. A new console wouldn't mean abandoning Kinect either, it can be marketed as a separate entity.
