Literally only finished the first turn of the tutorial before I had to come off it for the day but first impressions are great. Runs smoothly and looks good. Breaching is a cool idea and I can't wait to utilise it in a proper mission. And I really like the new turn order system as it adds a fresh layer of tactics in approaching the battle.

I've gone from intrigued to absolutely excited to get stuck in.

Its an odd one. Played a few hours and its a fresh take on the XCOM formula. I'm doing fine in missions but doing poorly in the base-game I think. It's also took a few days to work out that you only get certain rewards for missions if you get them from within the level, and it isnt always clear if you achieved some "better" mission outcomes. And I can't see anyway to view my inventory.

Also it does a great job of preventing you from "favourite team only" playing with its mechanics.

Haven't played it (or Gears Tactics) yet as I've been sucked back in to Stardew Valley and a couple of other games have been getting my attention too (Lonely Mountains: Downhill and Merchant of the Slies, both of which are great).

Played a couple of hours this morning and it's very good. Definitely different enough to stand on its own against the other games in the series and I'm finding the smaller levels and close quarters fighting to be quite a different kind of challenge. It's all very familiar but it's a new kind of puzzle to get my head around. Absolutely can't go wrong at £8 on release.

Axiom is the best, make sure you recruit him as soon as you can.

Run across the room and smash a guy, then get raged and finish off someone else. :datass: Getting good value out of Verge too with the mind control.

XCOM 2 finally starting to make sense after my 8 millionth attempt to get into it  And I've still managed to balls it up. (Avatar project progress bar is near completion and yet I've only just now managed to make contact with forces outside America ) But at least now I know how you increase contacts and so I'll be quickly starting the game over again despite all progress being lost. But I'm playing it on easy and things making more sense will hopefully mean I catch up quickly.

Don't worry too much about winning. Every game, you'll learn new tactics and strategies and you'll gradually get better bit by bit. Sounds like you're doing well though.

Do you have any of the DLC by the way? I found the game much harder with the additional missions, the ones that cause big boss aliens to randomly appear on missions.

Nay. Just the base version, via PS Now. The DLC is seemingly always on sale on PSN, but I was unsure about picking it up as I knew the game was difficult and so was uncertain if I'd ever get around to it. But now that things make a little more sense (and the load times are a bit more bearable thanks to the PS5!) I'll definitely pick up the DLC (War of the Chosen?) next time it's on sale.

New game progress: already made contact with Europe even though I've only done 1 black site mission. I've also already increased contact limit by 2.

War of the chosen is amazing. It really is. There is other dlc (alien pack) that also drops in new aliens. The standard Xcom 2 is good, but it gets a little repetitive. The war of the chosen helps massively to keep you on your toes.

Don’t be afraid to Evacuate if gooseberry fool goes wrong, and if you are staring out, occasional saves to help you work out what does and doesn’t work is useful.

Love the game. Pretty much buying a steam deck for xcom.

:!:  I knew the option was there but I've never even considered it. (Partly because I'm in the heat of the moment and the options never comes to mind, and partly because I'm saving before every big move I make :P) Ta for the tip.

By alien pack do you mean Alien Hunters?

I'm so glad 2 has finally clicked with me. I'd been waiting patiently to play it on PS5 (PS4 load times were so slow!) because I loved Enemy Unknown and Enemy Within so damn much on PS3. Can't wait to try Chimera Squad, when it finally hits consoles.

Alien hunters sounds about right.

Shen’s gift is robots, but you don’t really need them.

Yeah. The other smaller ones didn't sound all that interesting. War of the Chosen and Alien Hunters added to wishlist. (Now watch them NOT be on sale for bloody ages :x)

I was very surprised that they dropped the Mech class from Enemy Within, was somehow a big thing deciding which soldiers to butcher for the 'greater good', wasn't the same with the robots as they were just 'things' which had no personality.

Would be cool to see something similar in XCOM3, maybe something like cybernetic enhanced soldiers with gun arms or super strong legs for reaching vantage points in a single leap.

Yeah, I agree. The psi soldiers were good in xcom2, but they take ages to train.

The problem with the psi soldiers is that whenever they complete their training, I'm never satisfied and have to train them "just one more time".

In my previous playthrough, I somehow lucked out by putting an end to the UFO dark event. No such jamminess in this one :x

If I strawberry float this up now I am gonna be so pissed off  I've built some slick looking, powerful weaponry and armour, unlocked some very cool, OP af abilities and I've got characters who're able to execute mobs with full HP. And I'm not talking about scrub enemies, either, but things like those white spheres! I've also got my tactics down where I set the snipers up with the cone overwatch and draw fire into their vision, and have so much time on my hands that I often have overwatch ambush waiting for when Advent drop in back-up forces. So yeah. Here's hoping things continue to go my way.
