Still only on Chapter 2 here so have really met anyone new beyond the initial set of characters, most of those guys are growing on me though which is good!

Just had chain attacks introduced into the mix, going to need to practice with those a bit before I feel like I've gotten to grips with them - as always there's a lot going on in the systems to wrap your head around! I'll be interested to see if the system opens up any more layers from here, this take on chain attacks seem quite tactically interesting but I think I miss the more kinetic feel of the system from 2 at the moment.

Yep the chain attacks in this one aren't my fave, they can be quite spectacular but it feels more like choosing options from a menu than in previous games. 2 still has my favourite battle system (once I understood it - X might be better but I never got there...).

Started Chapter 5 and immediately went back to see if I missed any side quests since people kept going on about how many side quests they were doing in chapter 4 and I now realise how many I missed and how many hero quests I missed out on too.

Chapter 4 was amazing by the way.

I know I’ve only just really got the chain attacks but they seem to do relatively little damage compared to those in XC & XC2. Maybe it’s just me not really getting them yet.

Don’t worry the chain attacks are simpler than you think and you’ll be able to rack up plenty of damage before you know it

Do they start dealing more as you level up then? I think I got a 150% point and a 99% point combo in but think it only just dealt about 15k damage.

Just letting my Switch charge and then I’ll be back on this after a short time away from it, I can just sit in front of a fan to try and keep my Switch cool

If you get only 99 it’ll cut it short. The more you do the higher your damage output

Yeah healers max it out at 99%, at the minute I’m just cycling through the starting 6 classes, so have 2 healers on the go at once. Not sure if there’s going to be a definite best class/party balance as of yet but imagine there will be.

Generally each step should go attacker-healer-defender at first until you start aiming for more subtlety.

My Chain Attack record so far, from the beginning of Chapter 4, is about 750k.

Image

I do hate that Healers cap at 99% though, I don't really get the logic behind it.

Healers capping at 99% is a good thing, it gives you a base to then get the 200%+ orders which you wouldn't be able to do consistently without it.

Yeah I'm confused, the tutorial made me think that keeping it under 100% is what you should be aiming to do?

No, you only get a further round of attacks if you go over 100%. The bit I can't figure out is what prompts you getting another round aside from that because I get chains ending when I'm over 100%.

It's just annoying when you end up in a situation where only healers get reactivated, so you can never complete the round.

Quoting myself as I've just had a read on Chain Attacks before end of Chapter 3. So, they work as follows

Chain attack will continue until chain gauge is exhausted, you lose 1/3 per round unless you use a hero during that round and then it doesn't deplete
Opening with an attacker gives a 1.25x modifier to the TP amounts
Healer attack will always max out at 99%
Finishing with a defender grants a restoration of the character with the highest TP value for the next round.

So ideally you should go attacker - healer - defender and aim to get 150% TP+

Found and finished a bunch more Hero Quests now and the number of classes opened up to me is huge. Only issue is I'm in lower level areas doing side quests so I can't level any of them up lmao

If you get 150% 2 people come back, if you get 200% 3 people come back so you should be good.

No idea what these heroes or hero quests are but guess that means you get more than 6 party members? Guess the chain attacks get better after chapter 3 then from one of the above posts, I’ll be back on this later on all being well. Really hope this is it for battle mechanics though, like in XC2 they just seem to love throwing new stuff at you constantly

This is a really good explanation with loads of examples. The YouTube channel had a lot of quality XBC3 content too.

Wish my image sig would work

Ah we're into YouTube battle tutorials already. FWIW I've managed to pretty much figure out chain attacks from the in-game tutorials, the only thing I hadn't gathered was exactly when they ended.

The tutorials have been a bit better in this tbf, having the training dojo (or whatever it's called!) to try stuff out in if you need it is quite a good idea.

Still feels like some of the explanations are in classic FFVII "attack while the tail is up" territory though!
