By the way, is it just me or does the game explain gem crafting really badly?

It wouldn't be Xenoblade if i didn't need to head to Youtube for some tutorials, but I was wondering if it becomes any clearer or if what you get at the start is your lot?

I never did any gem crafting, largely because I didn't understand it!

I don't think ignoring it caused me any problems to be fair

I think the gem crafting is pretty unnecessary really. You get an insane amount of ingredients to craft gems but you find more than enough gems in the wild anyway. I guess they're good for absolute stat nerds who want to eke out every small advantage but I consider myself a high nerd and I didn't bother crafting any gems.

I think that I tried crafting towards the middle of the game to try to increase my main character's speed outside combat to help with exploring but I don't think that you really need to worry, especially if you go exploring for chests with rare gems. It's definitely not explained in the game as well as it could be because I had to look up a guide online to try to work out how to craft something specific.

I also had no idea how to properly craft new gems, I kind of muddled through some and got some reasonable ones to replace some low level gems I’d been using for a while.

It's official, Grcade just doesn't get gem crafting in Xenoblade

That said, the little animations and voice clips when you do it are really cute!

I started crafting about 2 thirds of the way through the game. It's a bit confusing, but using the right combo of characters can get you some nice gems that give your stats a good boost.

I didn't find the gem crafting to be too hard to understand. I would suggest just doing it and seeing what happens.

I wouldn't bother with gem crafting until much later in the game. The process is so tedious and anything you can craft at the start of the game will be outclassed by rewards and gems you craft later. It also relies heavily on having good affinity between your party members to get more crafting rounds and random bonuses.

I'm not sure if it is the optimum method, but I first try to turn all my ether crystals, which have multiple qualities like strength and aggro up, into ether cylinders with 80-99% strength in a single quality. Someone with a gentle flame is easier for this as they won't add too much strength to a single quality and put you over 100%, and multiple qualities will get boosted in each round. I then craft using these ether cylinders and aim for over 300% strength. Here's where someone with a strong flame is good. Finishing with +100% strength creates a gem of the same level as the ether crystal/cylinder, +200% adds +1 level, and +300% makes two gems with the +1 level, so starting with a strength of 160-180% from two max ether cylinders makes the latter a lot easier to achieve.

I must admit that I wasn't generally as engaged with the game as I wanted to be which made a lot of "optional" stuff very easy for me to ignore/overlook. Affinity between characters was something I gave zero gooseberry fools about. That stuff where you rebuild Colony 6? Nah, can't be arsed. All the heart to hearts around the place that were locked behind Affinity? Jog on.
