How does the combat compare to 2? I’m assuming 2 expanded on the foundations of 1?

I never got on with the combat in 2 but then again I'd call XC1 the best JRPG ever made. The story, sidequests, characters, streamlining and elimination of archaic JRPG mechanics and setting are all second to none. There's even an animal crossing-style huge sidequest where you have to rebuild one of the shattered human colonies. XC2 felt like a step backwards for me. The combat was overly complicated, the treatment of female characters rather laughable and immature and it put back some of the archaic mechanics XC1 got rid of, like not having to backtrack to finish off fetch quests.

Interesting, side quests was a bit of a weak point in XC2 to me, Sounds like even if I don't like the combat as much it'll be stronger in other areas anyway.

There are tons of quests to do and you get the rewards instantly without having to backtrack to talk to an NPC or drop off an item. I found XC2 had lots of quests but I'd forget who I needed to go back to speak to.

Side quests were definitely not the highlight of XC2, they were decent enough though. Certainly not BOTW levels of poor.

Combat was incredible though, probably the best JRPG combat mechanics I think I've ever experienced so I suspect XC1 might be a bit of a let down for me in that regard.

Still really looking forward to this though! :toot:

Be good to see how the world has changed in the year since the initial game concluded. Good for some people that from the sounds of it you can jump straight in with the extra content rather than playing through the game again first.

I wonder if they got Jenna Coleman back to voice Melia. I highly doubt it.

I hope so

Also it’d be weird having her voice Melia for the majority of the game only for it to change for the extra content. I sadly doubt she’d reprise her role as well though :(

I didn't even realise that she voiced Melia. :o

Can't decide whether to go physical or digital with this.

Anyone found it for sub £40 physical yet? £42.85 on Shopto best I've seen so far.

Best I’ve seen so far as well, considering you normally get stuff a day or two early from ShopTo I’m more than happy to stick with them, with the lack of first party releases from Nintendo this year I’m really looking forward to playing this again. I mean I adore Animal Crossing but after 3 solid months on it I’ll be ready to sink plenty of hours into something else come May

Truth bombs here. XC2 is probably the most disappointing game I've ever played. It took away almost everything I liked about the first game.

EDIT: Actually, I'm misremembering, that was Xenoblade Chronicles X. But I didn't like XC2 much either. Design was atrocious.

Never forget:

Once you've got everything unlocked then the combat system in XC2 is probably the best in any jrpg.

Yeah the combat is 2 is incredible, easily the best in any JRPG I've played. I adored XC2, it is absolutely one of my favourite games of the last few years. A genuinely brilliant game that I just couldn't get enough of.

A few missteps around character design are not enough to tarnish the otherwise excellent time I had with the game.

Yeah that was a bizarre musical choice for XCX :fp: Some of it was good though! Although Tatsu can do one

I enjoyed XCX on the whole though, still think Elma should have been the main character rather than a player generated one as that way the main character wouldn’t have been a mute. Also still disappointed there hasn’t been a sequel yet, the ending more or less screamed there would be.

That NLA night theme would be strawberry floating great if there wasn't some guy rapping over it.

I like the music in the game a lot, and I love Sawano (I have the soundtrack for this on CD). But a lot of the time, the music he produced for X does not fit normal gameplay. It's too short, and there's random J-Rock everywhere in it.

I hope they stick with Mitsuda/ACE going forward. Those guys are amazing musicians, and they understand how to do game music.

I've never played XC, but have always been tempted by how well it's received here and more widely.

But, is it just me or are the definite edition re-designs less appealing than the original? The original faces and so on had an appealingly textured, weathered look to them (rather like FF XII) whereas this has now made them seem very bright and blandly anime.

Nah, I love the redesigns. The character models in the original were passable, I was more impressed by how strawberry floating big the areas were on the Wii.

It was a really impressive game on a technical level. The draw distance was incredible in certain areas.

I preferred the original models when this was first announced but the new ones had grown on me when I saw the latest trailer. I'm really feeling it! :toot:

I've been thinking about getting a Wii U just to play through X again as I really enjoyed the setting and combat. I feel like all the Chronicles games are great but they all lack that little bit of polish or thought in places. Like in XC2 the way the bloody field research works.

edit: And I've just remembered in X, trying to get all the collectables, although this kind of applies to all the games. Very annoying.
