I only realised 25 hours in you get rewards for filling it in :slol:

Decent rewards too!

The affinity system seems ambitious but half-baked at the moment. It's a good idea, but again, seems tied to fetch quests and it's affinity with NPCs/towns that basically seem static and ever changing.

I'll need to watch a YouTube video on combat to see if I'm doing it right too. Feels like I am just using the same few attacks and waiting for the monsters to die, rather than being strategic. Have no idea how you keep track of what your party members are doing as well.

Enjoying it so far, mind.

6 hours of play after picking this back up and I've finally cleared my quest log, now I can move on with the main game

30 hours in, just started Chapter 8

Are you actually bothering to do all the ‘Kill X enemies or Collect X items’? I’ve been accepting them and just letting whatever ones automatically clear themselves as I go  the big side quest I did earlier when I was after the Giants Treasure and had to fight the big spider was good but not came across one like that since sadly.

I’m also 20 hours in and on Chapter 11 :shifty: feel like I’m speeding through at this point.

Yeah I'm pretty much doing everything

When I get to a new area, before exploring it, I accept all the side quests I can, and then go off vaguely in the direction of the main story, exploring and taking out monsters/collecting items that I spot along the way. And then when I can tell an area is concluding I mop up everything outstanding.

However, I'm at the Great Sea (or whatever its called) now and there are ALOT of side quests :dread:

The only side quests to really focus on are the ones with a timeout clock next to them. A lot of the rest will kind of resolve themselves as you go, or can be mopped up later on.

I’ve not even noticed any timeout clocks next the missions, I’ll have to check what’s in my quest log

Up to Chapter 12 now, just over 20 hours in, feels like some big events are going to start to happen :datass:

I gave up on the game on 3DS because I got overwhelmed by a compulsion to do all the sidequests which completely killed the pacing. The problem wasn't the repetitive MMO nature of the quest design, or even the huge volume - but the fact I had to stop after every single story event and revisit every previous location with NPCs - at every time of day - to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

That's exactly what I'm doing now, having picked up where I left off two years ago.

I'm 25 hours in and I've just reached Satorl Marsh. I don't know if that's good, but I suspect not. :slol:

This was a big problem. I'd say two things:
1. Definitive Edition on Switch puts map markers anywhere a quest shows up (so long as you're in the area), and is phenomenally more user-friendly as a result. You may not want to buy the same game again, which would be fair enough, and the quests are still bad and plentiful.
2. XC3 improves the side-quest side of things no end. A big step up for the series.

I didn't realise the Switch version added map markers like that, that genuinely does sound game changing (as silly as that sounds!)

That takes me from "no interest" in rebuying the game to "possibly interested in the future".

It also drops markers on the collectables needed for any active quest. For when you've got a rare doodah right there.

How exactly are you supposed to keep getting a sequence going with the chain attacks? I’ll start one off and usually do the pink, green, yellow arts in order to topple an enemy (most of the time they have the exclamation mark on the Art as well) but it seems random as to when I can then press B to perform another attack in the same sequence?

Yep I'm not actually sure what triggers that. Might be the tension level? I know it happened more the more I got into the game.

The chance is calculated from a combination of how high the affinity between your party members is, how high the tension of your party members is at that point in the battle and how well you timed your earlier chain link press.

So Balla saying it happened more the further he got into the game is likely because of a higher affinity between his party members.

I don't think I ever really understood what was going on with the tension system in this, or if I ever did then I've subsequently forgotten all about it!

Affinity was something I never went out of my way to improve either, pretty sure most of my party were at best ambivalent to one another even by the end of their epic journey together!

I definitely paid more attention to both those systems on the Switch than on the Wii.
