The makers confirmed that the ending was intended to be positive and that Pyra and Mythra definitely still have their memory.

It takes around 15 hours game time I believe, you need to continually keep sending out merc missions to complete Ursula's blade quest.

Seriously though, I think it's a lovely ending. Glad it ended that way. Loved theXenoblade Chronicles reference as well.

Is this quite grind heavy?

I have this and the expansion but was going to hold out until I play the Definitive Edition of XC when it comes out.

No. I didn’t have to grind at all until the final boss, which was more due to me not understanding the mechanics but to be fair the game does a lousy job of explaining them.

This.

I spent so long because I wanted to do the side quests which didn't get me a lot of XP

It’s not too grind-y to be fair, once the battle mechanics click with you, you can deal out loads of damage that makes grinding unnecessary for the most part. For myself it took a long time to click though, so I did do a bit of grinding via battling and side quests earlier on but not so much towards the end.

When you get the Elemental Break mechanics down then dishing out several million points in damage in a single attack isn't too difficult.

It's absolutely essential to pull them off if you want to take on the optional super bosses. You need to have good timing in using Pneuma to get maximum effectiveness since she can damage every element and damages all of them at the same time.
