whelp got all the bees, gave the lair itself ago, might have been able to stick with it for a while but it coming up "epic fail" when you die may get on my nerves a little too much

This is really great news. I had no desire to do the Impossible Lair tbh. I'm gonna go back and finish it now.

Also, for those who own Yooka Laylee on Switch you can get this game for 50% off (£12.49) I have snapped it up as it lasts until 19th

Hello, this is me, several months later. I've got basically everything else in the game apart from farming quills to unlock all the Tonics, and I really liked basically all of what I played; but I decided not to spoil my enjoyment of the game up to that point by banging my head on the final level. What I experienced didn't seem much fun, and I can't imagine it getting much more so.

Guessing you never went back to it OR?

I did not (my brother has the game at the moment anyway), although people have said it's much better with checkpoints now

I never went back to it either. I intend to replay it at some point though.

I think I got past the third boss battle in the Impossible Lair before giving up, I've done everything else in the game bar actually finishing it. I should really go back to it now they've added checkpoints as I want to polish off the platinum trophy.

Can’t imagine what it would have bee-n like before checkpoints - I found it bad enough with them. Just no desire to go back and learn those stupid-hard bits of platforming.

I went back to it after the checkpoints had been added and now I can't get as far as I did without them. :fp:

Dunno what it is about this game but I can't quite get into it. I quite like most of the time I spend playing it, but every time I'm not quite sure how to do something or something is just out of reach I find myself without the motivation to work through it. Bouncing round the levels is fun, but this is just a genre of game I do not have the time for anymore.

What the strawberry float is the deal with the chase sections in the last actual level? :fp: So many jumps where Yooka just doesn't quite make it.

And who's idea was it to have a chase section where you can't actually run away because the camera focuses on what's chasing you? :x Completely strawberry floating stupid.

EDIT: Wonder if it's deliberate that it just happens to be the level where the actual book is on the minetrain dickhead that was the worst thing about the first game

The relief when you finally get through it good lord.

Always just seems like Playtonic don't actually want to make a genuinely good game, they're fine just coasting along on the "oh it's made by the people that did B&K" good press. There's some shambolic design decisions in here. Think it's kinda telling that almost every achievement beyond the third paywall is "rare" on the xbox  No-one's actually bothered playing it any further.

I payed it right up to the Impossible Lair itself and I have to say, I really liked all of it! Apart from the Lair itself which is nonsense and which I never properly tried.

I'd call it good but flawed, there are definitely things the game does well. Just too many other design choices holding it back, chief among them the impossible lair itself.

I think Playtonic deserve some kudos for making this as the sequel. The first game obviously had the Banjo Kazooie spiritual successor appeal, but outside of the characters this is Donkey Kong Country.

This was free on some PC service recently so I grabbed it and will certainly give it a go at some point. I didn't get on with the first YL game really but I'm hoping I fare better with this one as the general view seems to be that it's a superior experience?

I'd say so. Different genres, but Impossible Lair is a better version of the genre it is in

I loved this game and thought the Lair was a fair challenge without any bullshit deaths - always your fault, which is what I want from a platformer. I think it only took me 2-3 hours of attempts to make it through.
