You can push a button and wipe one social media platform from existence - which do you choose?

In a room 101 type scenario, you get to go full Thanos and snap a social media platform from existence.

The conditions are:

1. Everyone forgets it ever existed except for you, but can't post about it elsewhere or tell anyone about what's happend.
2. The vacuum it leaves will not be filled by another platform. The type of thing you get rid of is gone for good.

I've put Facebook and Twitter becuase I only know about those two I also added Instagram becuase although I think its an app with filters for food, I've seen people say they follow people on it, so it must be social media of some sort.

And the correct answer is Facebook of course.

Social media as a whole has really weakened the humanitarian argument.

Twitter for sure. I've got a nice follow list consisting of people who like hill forts, alpacas, bird watching and flint knapping, so it's pretty pleasant, but there seem to be so many toxic aspects to it with the trolling and politics and abuse.

Instagram was my initial reaction, if only to stop all of those melters who take photos of their food/drink in public.

Twitter.

I'm baffled as to how it's become so embedded in society. Seems to be full of absolute cretins, it spreads misinformation, gives a platform to utter morons, its layout and design is gooseberry fool, and I rarely see anything funny, interesting, or useful on there that can't be found elsewhere already. I also hate the effect it's had on news and journalism: tweets from random plebs seemingly being the basis for news articles (i.e. "social media is saying..."), tweets being embedded in articles instead of the journalist doing actual work themselves, and journalists and politicians using it as a platform for spreading news/shite. Plus all the hashtag bollocks.

Of course other social media platforms have their issues, but Twitter seems like the worse. Feels like it disappearing would do more good than harm.

We can’t do much about the news, they’ll take crap from wherever if Twitter disappeared.

But Twitter itself is as good or as bad as your own selection. Follow cretins? Then don’t be surprised if all you see is cretinous views. And even the cretins that you do see are at least (usually) not somebody you know.

Whereas Facebook is populated with your friends, family and old acquaintances. It’s far more terrifying to find out that your uncle is a racist anti-vaxxer than it is to find out doglover54355431 is a twat.

People also trust things that are shared by friends and family. Your great aunt now thinks 5G causes Covid-19 because she saw your nephew posting about it, not because of a random tweet she saw.

That’s why Facebook is so dangerous.

Facebook is demonstrably worse than twitter owing to it's averagely much older and more technically naive user base.

I've tried to escape but I can't.

Facebook as it's what many people use for news and it's genuinely terrifying to think that people take it all as fact.

Twitter is evil and used to bully people. I also hate how journalist now use it for lazy news. "Peter Andre has said that he is really sad about the death of Michael Jackson, Rip in peace Jacko he wrote, moving words there from the official Twitter of Peter Andre"

Bring back MySpace, loads of bands and I could set a band!'s song as my MySpace theme song for those visiting my page. What wonderful days. Tumblr was ok before they banned porn and everyone moved to Reddit.
