The thing with Facebook is that everyone is on it. Which is both mighty convenient but also mighty annoying.

Twitter's just loud

Twitter is the easiest of all the major social networks to curate to exactly how you want it.

Doesn't that also make it the worst for becoming an echo chamber?

The problem with Facebook is it's populated by both my immediate and tenuously distant family who I'm obligated to stay in contact with, friends of friends, and old colleagues and classmates.

All of which are apparently strawberry floating morons.

I couldn't care less about that for the purposes I use it for.

I’ve tailored my Twitter to just be people complaining Twitter is an echo chamber.

Suppose it doesn't matter if you can somehow avoid news/politics. Just seems like they invade everything at the moment.

My twitter feed mostly consists of programming/web dev stuff, irl friends and japanese wrestling. I use a third party client (Tweetbot) so I don't get any ads, promoted tweets, posts other people have liked etc. appearing on my timeline and I've muted words or hashtags like Trump, Brexit and Love Island and such.

I'm baffled as to how it's become so embedded in society. Seems to be full of absolute cretins, it spreads misinformation, gives a platform to utter morons, its layout and design is gooseberry fool, and I rarely see anything funny, interesting, or useful on there that can't be found elsewhere already. I also hate the effect it's had on news and journalism: tweets from random plebs seemingly being the basis for news articles (i.e. "social media is saying..."), tweets being embedded in articles instead of the journalist doing actual work themselves, and journalists and politicians using it as a platform for spreading news/shite. Plus all the hashtag bollocks. :dread:

Of course other social media platforms have their issues, but Twitter seems like the worse. Feels like it disappearing would do more good than harm.

You could just easily replace Twitter with Facebook and your post would basically be the same btw. And if you want to talk about effects on news and journalism, Facebook royally strawberry floated plenty of media outlets that went for the whole "pivot to video" boom by massively inflating the viewing figures on their videos to the point where it caused layoffs or sites shutting down completely.

The spread of misinformation is also arguably worse on Facebook due to the age range of its users being much wider resulting in more usage from older generations who are much more susceptible to fake news nonsense.

And in terms of layout and design it's objectively one of the worst I use.

To be fair I'd have to argue as well that Facebook is worse for fake news because of the "safeness" of being in a "family" bubble, whereas Twitter is 100% public (unless both profiles are set to private) and so generally people are accountable for gooseberry fool they say. People also think they are seeing stuff from their friends and family when they're not; proportionally they are getting more information from adverts and sponsored content and reposted content than anything their friends might actually say or believe.

It's about as corrupt as "social connectivity" can get as investors pushed Facebook to be monetised very hard before too long and that will always be the case.

Facebook is also angled at the idea it is private when it is not. Anything posted on Facebook is effectively public.

I appreciate Facebook for making events easier to organise.

I went for Instagram (I have no interest in a social network that does what FB does but worse and more vapid), but if I were picking one I’m actually on it’d be Twitter. Even if you block @realDonaldTrump some person’s going to be commenting on his tweets and reminding me he exists.

Facebook for me. Until reactivating it recently I hadn't used it regularly for just over a year so I could happily do without it. The only social media platform I frequent is Twitter which I find useful as it lets me interact directly with YouTubers and streamers I follow who are usually pretty responsive.

I'd argue Twitter is the best platform for posts to actually cross over different sections of society since they're public statements by default, and that the points of view of minority groups can be boosted as a result.

The problems are mainly its dreadful lack of good moderation (especially against far-right groups and Trump), the feeling that half the people on the site are bots or sock puppet accounts, and the way other companies use it, either through chummy personified corporate accounts, shitty tabloid press amplifying two tweets to back their own opinions, or general clickbait headlines and PR pieces. It doesn't generally help that conversations and opinions on current affairs are developed at breakneck speed, but this isn't something Twitter can be singled out for.

Facebook is much worse I think.

Lol.

I used to hate Twitter for the very reason that (from what I saw here) it seemed to be full of "just got out of bed!" Pointless crap. I recently got in to it however by realising you can thin down exactly what you do or don't want to see. Mine is mainly sports I'm interested in, along with a few people from here and some comedians I like. Best part for me is that you can interact with these people directly as most seem to engage with you.

Any people that post about their breakfasts or how great their life is in a self indulgent way get blocked.

Same goes for Instagram though (Which I use on private). With the bonus being you can instantly look at someone's page and see how narcissistic they are (like when every single picture on their page is a selfie).

I just find it much easier to sort through things on there and not miss people's posts. It's also great for showcasing art which I like.

Also you get this kind of thing

Speaking of narcissism. Imagine making your friends watch that at the start of a call.

Nothing more narcissistic than charging people to watch you stand alone on a stage for two hours.

Twitter dies. At least Facebook serves a purpose - I can stay in contact with people I know easily. Twitter is 90% spam posts, with the majority making next to no sense. It's awful for anything other than promoting things.

The silly neighbourhood vegetable.
