This is a tough one. I'm tempted to say buffalo (yes, there is a difference!) mozerella with tomato and basil (yum) or even steak with mustard (which I'm not sure I've ever even tried, but can imagine would be delicious)

But my final entry is: bunchy white bread, quality ham, butter, mayonnaise and crisp lettuce.

All these fellow cob lovers  No chance of me being mardy while I'm in such good company. Let me give you a croggy down the jitty and we can get an okey.

Of all the different local words for rolls in the world, I think Breadcake is the funniest. It's like a cake, right, but it's made of bread!

I can't gloat mind, I'm in Leicester. I'd just ask for a cob.

I’m originally from Derby so for me it was always a Cob too. It’s the slow assimilation into South Yorkshire.

They have other regional variations too like calling a Jitty a ‘Jennel’.

Beans on cheese on toast. There is no meal on earth with a better effort to reward ratio. I appreciate it is not technically not a sandwich and I'm not sure on how strict a definition we are sticking to here, so as a backup, I'll go for a toasted cheese and bean sandwich. Competition over. 8-)

Real butter on got fresh toast. Wait a few minutes for it to cool down a little then cover with a generous spread of Marmite. Tastes best on a hangover.

Beans and cheese in a toastie (in a proper sandwich toaster so it doesn't ooze everywhere) :datass: .

Oh yeah, the burning hot ooze is the only thing that lets down a cheese and beans toastie. But for this competition, my entry is heated to an appropriate level, to melt the cheese, but not turn it in to lava.

It would need at least ten minutes to cool enough to eat without resulting in a trip to A&E.

How many other sandwiches come with risk of severe injury? Probably none, but there's only one which is worth risk of severe injury.

I once managed to burn my mouth on a McDonald's apple pie, nearly an hour after buying it

The hottest toasted sandwich includes that plastic cheese and sweet chilli sauce/plum jam.

Not only does it burn your mouth and lips off, but it also roasts your fingertips just as you press them into your eyes whilst trying to see where the savlon is.

Told by a friend.

Nutella in a soft white freshly opened packet of sliced bread, Hovis or something.

It's chocolate, what's not to love?

Leftover turkey sandwiches with an extra slice of gravy-soaked bread in the middle; I call it the "Moist Maker".

I always read it as thus:

- Alleyway: the narrow passage that leads behind rows of terraced houses to access the back yards/gardens as nobody in a terrace uses their front door. I don’t at least.

- Jitty/Ginnel/Jennel: narrow pathway often leading from one street to another behind the backs of houses.

- Cob: the proper name for a crusty bread roll. Breadcake I can get on with but the north west call them teacakes which are a whole other thing (cakes with raisins in). I still have no idea what a Balm is supposed to be. I am sure someone from Manchester can fill us in.
