jawafour wrote:What a fantastic thread! I'm gonna enjoy reading through all the posts :) . Okay... as an "older" gamer I've been fortunate enough to enjoy using quite a few systems over the years. I've left some out from this post - mainly those that I played as "retro" systems some years after they were popular - but these are the ones that I played during their prime!

Commodore VIC-20 (1984)
My first computer system was bought for me by my dad. 3.5K RAM (athough I later bought the Vixen 32K switchable RAM pack), cassette deck (although it also had a cartridge port), 20 character screen width ( )... and it was awesome! Pharoah's Curse, Omega Race, Metagalactic Llamas Battle at the Edge of Time ( :datass: ), Jet Pac and Perils of Willy were my favourite games.

Commodore 64 (1985)
I sold my VIC and games to raise money to fund this, with the rest of the money being earnt from a paper round before school. I had enough money to get the system in December 1985 and, man, I was so hyped. The step upi from the VIC to the C64 seemed incredible at the time; to put it into context it was like going from, say, the NES to the SNES. I had so much fun with this machine and I still have all my kit (albeit in the loft) today. Lots of great games but, above all, it's that SID sound chip that most strikes memories with me - I still sometimes listen to C64 music tracks on my iMac now (thaks to SID player) .

Sega Master System (1987)
This was the first consle that I owned. I had read Computer & Video Games magazine's Go! pages (precursor to the legendary Mean Machines magazine) for months and was usure about getting he NES or the MS. I plumped for the MS on the basis that I could play Space Harrier, OutRun and other Sega hits on the system. Mastertronic / Virgin distributed the system in the UK and Europe and they did a great job. I bought the console on the weekend it launched, whilst on a family day trip to Westgate on the south coast. Strange place to buy it but I was just so excited to get it; Hang-On was built into the machine and I bought My Hero and Ghost House on Sega Cards. Years later, when I moved out of my parents place, I sold all the games for an absolute pittance and almost instantly regretted it. In subsequent years I have bought back most of the games... bar Power Strike I and II which now sell at ridiculous prices. I'm still so fond of the MS  .

Atari 520 STe (1989)
Oh boy. This came with probably the best ever gaming pack... the legendary Power Pack (v2)! Twenty games and most were pretty decent - incredible! I had placed an order with Evesham Micros for the 520 ST model but, fortunately, they upgraded my order to the "arrived that week" STe model. I loved the ST with its bright green GEM (windows) system! It's the only Atari system that I have bought and it still holds great memories for me. It introduced me to the mighty Kick Off and, man, did I play that a lot. Even so, I only had the machine for a few years as I "side-graded" to an Amiga (see later in my list) as the ST started to die out.

Sega Mega Drive (1990)
For delivering the "wow" factor, the MD was incredible. It remains the only system that I ever bought an imported version of; I picked up the Asian model which allowed UK (Europe), Japanese and American cartridges to be used. I bought Sonic the Hedgehog and Alien Storm alonside the console and they were sensational; vibrant, fast and brash! I still have all my MD carts although I did sell my Asian console (plus American and Japanese games) for some crazy reason and I still almost literally cry about this today  . I'm lucky enough to have a few MD consoles now, alongside a Mega CD and 32X. That ridiculous-but-lovable tri-force of kit still looks amazing when it is setup!

Nintendo Game Boy (1990)
I have a pal who has never been into console gaming but he did like the old portable electronic / LCD game systems, and he helped to get me excited about the launch of the new Game Boy system. Portable gaming with small switchable carts... this was amazing at the time! I got my system alongside Tetris And Super Mario Land and I instantly loved the wee machine. My younger brother was now getting into gaming, too, and he loved playing the games on my machine. My original console has long since died but I have a few Game Boy Color systems so that I can still slam in a GB cart every now and again :) .

Commodore Amiga 600 (1992)
So... after enjoying my Atari STe computer for a few years (see above) I migrated ober to the Amiga. The 600 was a lovely design; it was small, looked slick and was well-made. However, it was soon succeeded by the 1200 model and I swiftly sold on my 600 to raise funds for the 1200. Which is coming up next...

Super Nintendo (1993)
...but not before the Super Nintendo arrived on the scene! I was very much a Sega fan but, having seen Starfox running in-store on the SNES, I bought the system in early 1993. I like the SNES and bought a few games for it but, for me, it was always second-choice to the Mega Drive. I do admire the system, though; the console design was wonderful and games like Zelda and Mario Kart were great; Zombies (Ate My Neighbors) even more so!

Commodore Amiga 1200 (1993)
And so to my favourite computer; the mighty A1200. Well built, a wonderful catalogue of games and I added in a 200Mb (yep, Mb not Gb or Tb  ) hard drive. Great times, especially with stuff like Kick Off 2, Goal! and Championship Manager '93. I was in peak magazine-buying mode as well, picking up Amiga Format, CU Amiga, Amiga Power, Amiga Action and others every month. Great times, wonderful memories :) .

Sony PlayStation (1995)
I struggle to think of any other machine that delivered the same "wow" moment as when I saw Destruction Derby and Ridge Racer running on the PlayStation. For perhaps the first time, this really was like having arcade-quality games in your front room. I was totally onto the PS scene... gaming had previously been pretty un-cool but now it was on the front pages of lifestyle and fasion mags! People at work played on the system and there was - at last! - no social shame in being a gamer! Well, perhaps some, but not like it had been before  . Looking back, the gaming catalogue on the PS was incredible; such variety, range and quality. The graphics have aged now but, for me, the system remains a gem.

Nintendo 64 (1998)
I had spent a few years being engrossed by the PlayStation but, all of a sudden, the N64 caught my attention. I think it ws due to see my brother and his pals playing International Superstar Soccer 64... it looked so good and played so well that I had to get the machine. I picked up the GoldenEye 007 system pack and quickly grew to love the instant-load games and the large, vibrant graphics. This is a machine that I have actually grown fonder of over the years; today I like it even more than I did at the time, I think! On the collecting front I was fortunate to pick things up prior to 2010 i.e. before the crazy pricing that you see today. I have several systems and a nice set of games... even two copies of Bangai-O :toot: .

Nintendo Game Boy Color (1999)
A Game Boy with a colour screen? I was totally up for that idea and the system remains my favourite GB console. As for color-specific games... Martian Alert! and O'Leary Manager 2000 remain two of my favourite GB titiles.

Microsoft Xbox (2003)
I had gone through a relatively long period (around five years) without getting a new home gaming system and, after eyeing up the PS2 and the Gamecube for quite some time, I settled my mnd on getting the Xbox. The deciding factor was the translucent green model that appeared in 2003 - I saw it and just had to get it! It really did feel like a powerful machine; that start-up sequence and the built-in hard drive felt pretty advanced for the time. I hugely enjoyed gaming on the XB and, to me, it remains a shame that it was only really around for three years before being succeeded. Today, I have five Xboxes :toot:  ... :dread: .

Nintendo DS Lite (2007)
I was hugely unconvinced by the DS at launch; to me, the console design was clunky and the games pretty unconvincing. However... in 2007 the Lite
model appeared alongside some great new games and I became hooked! I still love the dsign of the Lite model - it's so slick and swish. Even now I can still enjoy using the machine and playing the games.

Microsoft Xbox 360 (2007)
Again, it took me a while to be convinced by the 360. I stuck with my original Xbox for nearly two years after the launch of the newer machine. Then the black Elite model arrived alongside Bioshock and I jumped on-board. The move to HD (720p) graphics was a big jump and I love the feel of playing on the 360. It remains one of my favourite and, looking at the amazingly long life and fantastic library of the system, it stands out as a classic gaming machine.

Sony PlayStation 3 (2008)
Hmmn. Admission time... it took me along time to like the PS3. It was techically more powerful than the 360 but, for me, it seemed to take a long time until the system showed any benefits above the 360's capabilities. Even so, over the years things improved and the later slim model was, for me, a lot more more attractive. In the end I spebt a lot of time playing on the console although that was pretty much solely due to Pro Evolution Soccer. My PS3 was my PES-playing machine and I definitely don't have any regrets about that :) .

Nintendo Wii (2009)
I can now spot a theme. This was another machine that I was very unsure of at launch and I held off for a long time before jumping aboard. Initially I had played a number of terrible party games at friends' houses and it had put me off the console. Then I played Wii Sports and I was drawn in! I still love the compact, svelte shape of the console today and - despite the boatloads of awful shovelware - the game range is wonderful. My Wii is still set up in my living room and I have no plans on putting it away... and I still play Wii Sports Resort weekly at my parents' place  .

Nintendo DSi XL (2011)
I got this at a cheap price and it is lovely; it is the brown model and, perhaps surprisingly, it looks great! The bigger screens work, I feel, really well on this model.

Nintendo 3DS (2011)
What a strange launch this machine had. I held off until the June when I got the console at a discounted price alongside Zelda Ocarina... and then gained the Ambasador GBA and NES games :toot: . Which I have still not played  . I am one of the seemingly few people who love the design of the original 3DS - the build quality is excellent and, to me, it looks the part. I then made a mistake...

Nintendo 3DS XL (2012)
...by selling my original 3DS and "upgrading" to the XL model. I know that most people preferred the XL, but I never got on with it; it felt plasticky and cheap and I wished I still had my original 3DS. So... I sold the XL and reverted back to the original model :o .

Nintendo Wii U (2012)
Pre-ordered. Loved it from launch. Still love it  . I got to be a real fan-boy of the Wii U - even more so because so many other folk were disparaging about it... that only bolsted my fanatacism! Even so, I can see that it never really got it its stride and it swiftly became clear that Nintendo were giving up on it. I feel that it is a cult system though... one that will be very collectible in years to come. I will always be a proud member of Club U 8-) .

Sony PlayStation 4 (2013)
I had a pre-order and cancelled it... before GRcade hype forced me to place a last-minute pre-order! I still remember my controller "speaking" whilst playing my first-ever game of Resogun and I was totally taken by surprise! . The PS4 has grown to become one of my all-time favourite game machines... it's hard to judge right now, but it feels I'll place it mightily close to that top spot. Even so, it had a very slow lauch period and in that first year I continued to play on my 360 far more than on the PS4! It has a huge range of quality titles and it has been the first system for which online has become a major part of my gamiing approach. It feels like it'll be a classic.

New Nintendo 3DS (2015)
For me, this model is 3DS perfection. It feels comfortable, looks great, is pleasantly dinky, has excellent 3D and those SNES-coloured buttons  . Lovely!

Sony PlayStation 4 Pro (2016)
Straight up wanted the power rush :datass: . Still not sure what it is doing over a standard PS4 for most games, though  . But, yeah, as I said above - this is one of my all-time favourite gaming systems.

Nintendo Switch (2017)
I was unsure and still totes in love with the U. I cancelled my launch pre-order. My reservations lasted unti late April. And then I jumped in. Oh, man, that display screen was wonderful and I loved being able to swap between portable and TV play! I still have reservations - no friend comms at all, virtually no "Nintendo-type" apps and incredibly basic system features... but, hey, the machine is still terrific. Early days, but it has so much potential.

So, yeah... gaming systems  . And GRcadian memories of them  .

This will take quite a while so I'll probably keep updating this post over a few days.

Master System (1989 ish) - surprise christmas present, came with two (three if you are include the hidden snail maze game) games built-in (Safari Hunt & Hang-on), I didn't get any other games in until my birthday the following September and remember not knowing how to put the game cartridges in.

Gameboy (1992, I think) - I had some Christmas money burning a hole in my pocket and saw that the place where my mum worked (Makro) were selling Gameboys for something like £45 so after a small amount of pestering I was allowed to buy one (avec Tetris which still remains an all time favourite)

Megadrive (1994) - I had wanted one for ages after playing Sonic and Supe Hang-on on my uncles console and was delighted to get my own for my 13th birthday, got it with Street Fighter II and shortly after bought Sonic 2 with some money I also got for my birthday.

32X (1994) - Got this for Christmas with Doom and Virtua Racing Deluxe, broke a week later and was replaced, replacement lasted until just after my sister was born in January 1995. Worst. console. ever.

Saturn (1996) - Wasn't really bothered about getting one until I played Virtua Fighter at a friends house and immediately started saving up for one, over several months I had got just over a quarter of what I needed and was considering just giving up on bothering, then came probably one of the few times in my life I've been totally lost for words - one day my mum came home from work and said something like "come and look what I've just found in this box" so I went to have a look at what I thought would be something really mundane and was greeted by a large box containing a brand new Saturn and four games (Virtua Fighter, Clockwork Knight, Theme Park and Sega Worldwide Soccer), turns out my parents were so impressed by my saving that they decided to buy one for me (some bizarre parental logic there but )

Playstation (1997) - I had just started revising for my GCSE's when I saw that Makro (thanks again mum) had a ridiculous bargain priced PS1 bundle on offer so on the understanding that I couldn't have it set up in my bedroom unit after I'd finished my exams I was given the green light to buy it. Ii got it with GTA and Pandemonium 2 but bought Tekken 2 and Ridge Racer Revolution the following week.

N64 (1998) -Got it for Christmas with the somewhat mediocre Star Wars: Shadow of the Empire, I then bought Diddy Kong Racing a couple of days later. I never really got on with the controller and the expensive cartridges meant I didn't buy many games for it.

Dreamcast (1999) - This was the first console I bought at launch, I even took the day off from college so I could spend all day playing Sega Rally 2 and Virtua fighter 3, I absolutely loved this wonderful little machine and was gutted when Sega stopped making games.

Neo Geo Pocket Color (2000-ish) - Bought this to take on holiday as the original gameboy was showing its age and I quite liked the idea of a handheld version of metal slug, unfortunately when I bought it I couldn't find Metal Slug anywhere so opted for Samurai Shodown 2 which thanks to the superb mini joystick played brilliantly, Unfortunately due to the absolutely abysmal lack of games available I soon abandoned it

Playstation 2 (2001 ish) - Not entirely sure when I got it but it was some time after launch, bought it with SSX and I think, Tekken Tag Tournament, despite my initial misgivings the PS2 went on to become one of my avourite consoles.

Gameboy Advance (original) (unsure of year) - Again I don't know exactly when I bought it but it was roughly around the release of MGS3 on PS2, bought it with F-Zero,, Kuru kuru kururin and another launch game but don't remember which one

Gamecube (2002) The final games console I got for Christmas, got it with Starfox Adventures and a Wavebird controller , unfortunately my parents didn't get a memory card with it so I couldn't use it properly until I bought one on Boxing day, again one of my favourite consoles of all time.

GBA SP (unsure of year) - I really don't know why but for some reason I imported a Japanese one from Lik-Sang.

Xbox (2003 ish) - Bought an almost new condition transparent 'crystal' model with a few equally good condition preowned games from gamestation (my brother worked there at the time and got staff discount) the games were PGR2  , Panzer Dragoon Orta  , Jet Set Radio Future  and Gunvalkyrie :x - I later acquired a disc only copy of Halo which I played for around 3 hours before giving up and never played it again.

Xbox 360

Playstation 3

Nintendo DS

Nintendo DS Lite

PSP

Nintendo 3DS

I see the majority of you have included your handhelds in your journeys, something I avoided but will just list quickly now:

Nintendo Gameboy - the original, I got this for Christmas when it launched (along with a Thunderbirds VHS and a delightful shellsuit 8-) ). Tetris, Super Mario World 2, The Simpsons. Such classics. I shudder to think how many batteries my parents had to buy for me and my sister, our carbon footprint must have been immense :slol:

Sony PSP - Barley played this, I came in just as it was dying so got a couple of games and then bailed. Still got it and it's in great condition, but it's not something I look back fondly on.

Nintendo DS Lite - My Animal Crossing machine, I've got 1 in black and 1 in white. My wife also has one and played a lot of Professor Layton, but it then went in the cupboard never to be seen again.

I'm loving all the stories guys, lovely to see how we're all connected through our passion

NES

The NES was before my time, but this was a hand-me-down from an older cousin to me and my brother (I think he'd just got the mega drive). Duck Hunt and RoboCop were the first two games I ever played. All the games we had were what came with it, which included SMB and SMB3, but the real best game was Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers - especially in co-op.

N64

The first new console I had, shared still with my brother. We had plenty of classics, and this was the era when we even rented a few games from blockbuster over weekends. It was the N64 that cemented my love for videogames, and shaped so much of my tastes with games like Ocarina of Time and Banjo-Kazooie.

PC

I imagine it was around the time of getting the N64 that I started playing games on PC too, although I never had a machine of my own until I got a laptop in sixth form. The original Civilization was a big part of my early gaming life though. My dad even printed off the entire civlopedia!

Game Boy Color

The first console of my own, I got this with Pokemon Red and Blue (although I had to give Red to my brother after I chose Blue and let him play the console too - he later got a Game Boy of his own... but a Game Boy Pocket. I think my parents felt bad when they realised the difference). I had a travel wash bag that happened to fit the GBC really well (as well as my accessories like a clip-on magnifying lens for the screen), and it kicked off my love for portable gaming as I could take it away on long car journeys and on holiday.

Game Boy Advance

The first console I remember being excited for the launch of, me and my brother both got one each. Mine was Glacier while my brother had Fuchsia, and I got it with Kuru Kuru Kururin. I took a step up with the accessories for this as my travel bag was actually designed for it!

PlayStation 2

I wanted the Gamecube, but after a change of heart my brother convinced my parents to get us the PS2 for Christmas instead. It was a good choice. The PS2 opened up my gaming world and I have a huge library of games for it. This was the last console I shared with my brother.

PSP

This is perhaps the console I am most attached to - even if the one I have now is actually a refurb as my original broke just as the warranty ran out! It also probably marks where me and my brother diverged in how much we played games, as my brother never got a PSP. I took the PSP in to school for years as me and my friends played games like Star Wars Battlefront, Syphon Filter and Monster Hunter during breaks and lunches.

Wii

The first home console of my own, I got this on release with much hype for Twilight Princess. And the first thing I did on boxing day? Went out in the sales and bought Wind Waker, the Zelda collector's edition and a Gamecube controller now I could finally play them  This was the last console I got as a present from my parents.

Nintendo DS Lite

PSP was and remained my handheld of choice, but I got the silver DS Lite to coincide with the release of Phantom Hourglass. Have you detected a Zelda theme yet? This was the first console I bought with my own money.

PlayStation 3

I bought the PS3 at probably the worst time for the hardware, getting an original fat model, but with only 40gb of storage and no PS2 backwards compatibility. Game wise though it was worth it, as I bought it to play MGS4. I actually raced through the end of MGS2 the night before MGS4's release so that I could go round my friend's to play the beginning together, it was that big of an event! This was the first home console I bought for myself.

PlayStation Vita

I bought my Vita for Tearaway, and while my Vita library never approached the size of my PSP library, it's still a console I love, and the first in this list I still count as "modern" that I've yet to ever pack away. I got this while unemployed in the summer after finishing university.

PlayStation 4

My current home console of choice, I bought this when Little Big Planet 3 came out, but of course one of the first things I did was rebuy Ground Zeroes to play it next-gen. This was basically a Christmas present to myself, arriving the day before we had our "House Christmas" at the start of December in the house share I live in.

New Nintendo 3DS

I got the New 3DS on release, having not been sold on the original model as I already had my Vita. I basically bought the New 3DS for Monster Hunter 4U, which was the second game I got for it as it came out about a week later. The game I got with it on release? Majora's Mask 3D of course!

WiiU

I literally had to edit this in as I forgot about it. I bought a refurbed model from Argos through ebay, and it's the only console I've never had in my bedroom - I've always played it in the living room of my house share. It still gets plenty of use for Mario Kart!

Nintendo Switch

Finally, the Switch. The first console I've ever bought at release, and quickly becoming one of my favourites. What sold me on this? Zelda of course

--

The takeaway from all of the above? Zelda, MGS and Monster Hunter sell me consoles.

It is interesting to wonder how many people have bought an entire new gaming system for hundreds of pounds, purely off the back of wanting one particular game - the power of the system seller in evidence!

I was going to but didn't want to waffle on  It was my second Zelda game after OoT and not the game I got with my GBC as Pokemon takes that crown. So while one of my favourite games of all time, it wasn't a system seller or my introduction to the series.

I also just realised that I somehow managed to forget an entire console in my list... I'll have to edit it in

1980-something Atari - 2600 A hand-me-down from my cousin. I have fond memories of playing this on our matching wood veneer TV.

mid 80's - Spectrum+ My main gaming machine for most of the 80's and the first one my parents actually bought for me. Easily one of my favourites that I owned.

Late 80's - Amstrad CPC 464 Another hand-me down from a cousin. I don't remember much about it TBH. I must have played it at some point but it's not left any particular memories with me.

Late 80's early 90's - Master System 2 My first Sega console! And one of the reasons I became such a Sega nerd! Absolutely loved this console though having to pay so much for games was a shock.

early 90's - Megadrive As much as I loved the Master System we didn't have it very long before I got a Megadrive. Why my parents bought one so soon I can't remember but it was probably my petulant whining. This is my joint first-placed favourite console and I never felt I was missing out when some of my friends started getting the SNES.

Mid 90's - Playstation We got our Playstation a little later after launch. I would have quite liked a Saturn but we had been burnt by the MegaCD and frankly, I don't actually remember there being much of a Saturn presence in the shops anyway. Loved the console and playing 3D games felt like was living in the future

1999 - Dreamcast The first console I bought with my own money and ties with the Meagdrive as my two favourite consoles. That said time has not been kind on my views of the Dreamcast. Not the console itself or the games (I'm still disappointed after all these years they never released Argatha though) but my rabid Sega fanboyism is embarrassing to look back on. This was Sega's comeback console! They were going to come in and knock Sony down to size. This was going to be the console of it's generation. Why I was quite so adamant that the Dreamcast was going to do so well I don't know! All that said, had the Dreamcast stuck around had and a steady stream of releases it would have remained my main console of the generation. I dread the day my Dreamcast stops working.

2001-onwards I got a bit silly here expecting Sega to release hundreds (may or may not be exaggerated for comedy purposes) of games across all formats so bought 3 home consoles of that generation. Quite why I put Sega on such I pedestal I'm not sure. Also, I didn't buy them just for Sega games, that'd be silly

PS2 A great console with my personal favourites being Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Rez, Mark of Kri.
Xbox A bit meh on this one. The games I owned were great but the ones I wanted were few an far between
Gamecube While technically not my first Nintendo console it is the first one I bought while it was current gen. Though I didn't own loads of games for it I loved the ones I owned. Also the first console I bought on launch day.

Xbox 360 Probably my second favourite console. The only bad thing I have to say about it is, having had two die on after previously only having two console die on me in 30+ years of gaming is disappointing.

PS3 I bought this quite close to the end of last gen. It's been fine. I bought it mainly to play a handful of consoles exclusives. It's lived longer than my 360(s) but then it hasn't been used anywhere near as much.

Current gen Nothing has really jumped out at me this generation and I still haven't bought anything from any of the console makers

I also have a collection of retro consoles along the way which have all been fun but I don't have the same nostalgia for them as I do consoles that I owned as they were current. I've dabbled in the handheld market too which are kinda fun but nothing ever really grabbed me enough to have me spending loads of time or money on them

Please do not post this in the "No Context" thread

ZX Spectrum - Fond memories of sitting through those loading screens while the tape played
NES - Eldest brother gave this plus the Master System to me and my other brother
Master System
SNES - Shared Christmas present with my brother
Gameboy - Got it with Tetris and both Super Mario Land games
PS1 - Went halves on it with my brother
N64 - Birthday present with Goldeneye and OoT. Ended up staying up until 3am playing on a school night
GBA - Christmas present. Got Doom and Castlevania CoTM which reawakened my love for the series.
Dreamcast - Bought it off my brothers mate for £30 with Crazy Taxi 1 and 2, Sonic Adventure and Quake 3.
Gamecube - Delayed birthday present at launch. Last home console I truly loved thanks to all the great Nintendo output and re-releases of stuff like PSO.
PS2 - Bought if for Vice City but had more fun with San Andreas
DS - Handheld perfection at the time. Metroid, Zelda, Advance Wars, GTA, Mario and many top class Castlevania titles.
Wii - Bought it for Zelda but ultimately disappointed. The PS3 and 360 didn't interest me so I stuck with my handhelds and eventually built a gaming PC.
DSLite - Improved on the base DS in every area, truly awesome bit of kit.
Built my first gaming PC - Most rewarding experience tbh and much easier than I expected.
3DS - Not quite as good as the DS thanks to a weaker software line-up (lack of decent Castlevania really hurt it for me) but a great bit of kit. The 3D was neat but a waste of battery in the end.
Built another gaming PC
New3DSXL - Much improved and it gave me my first taste of handheld Xenoblade.
Switch - I use it mostly as a handheld, but in less than a year this has given me more gaming joy than anything else in the last decade. So many good titles and much to look forward to in the coming years.

In the beginning:

Atari VCS

Everyone's going Atari, the number 1 video game! Almost 40 years on, I still remember the tune. So the VCS (as I used to call it and still do) turned up either Christmas 1980 or 81. This was a very surprising event because unlike most people, we still had a black and white TV and would not get a video recorder until 1986. My mum & dad were not really (and never were) into technology so the VCS being my dad's Christmas present was quite an extraordinary event. The VCS came with Combat plus two other games, Space Invaders and Indy 500 (Indy 500 also came with its own paddles).

Apparently this was an unwanted present my mum got cheap from a friend at work, but their loss was my dad's gain (or as it turned out, my gain :D ). Those first few days were amazing as I played with my sister and my best friend who lived a couple of doors away. I remember on the first day my friend asking "could he come back after dinner" to continue playing, me thinking "strawberry float off, stop limiting my play time" and my mum saying "yes, of course you can" :x

These were great video gaming days. I'd just started secondary school and a select few people had this and numbers grew over the following couple of years. But for once, I was the trailblazer and had the latest thing. :datass:

Plenty of borrows with cartridges from friends and a near by video rental shop even started renting the games for a couple of quid for a few nights. Birthdays and Christmas presents were cartridge based and Activision came along with games cheaper than Atari's. Even better, they had lifelike graphics that was not found in Atari games.

Ok, so maybe thinking about it they weren't that lifelike but at the time, it certainly looked better than a line and a dot representing a bat and ball. But then it wasn't about graphics, Atari made a good effort on Defender and anyone who played the addictive Pele's championship soccer for any length of time would definitely have got blisters on their hands. Adventure was probably my favourite of the VCS games, Dungeons & Dragons on the big screen, where "big screen" is an 18" black and white TV.

Anyway, that is enough for now. Next time on Death's Head's console journey (if I can be bothered) we move forwards to 1983 where I have a Vic 20 and everyone else has a strawberry floating Spectrum, C64, Atari 400/800, Acorn Electron or BBC Micro. FFS.

Yes?
