Spilling out of the Super Mario 3D All Stars chat...

5. ...I think it would have to be SM64. It's not aged well at all but I can't think of any other options that I've played.

My own picks for a top 5:

1. Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
2. Banjo-Kazooie
3. Rayman 2: The Great Escape
4. Grow Home
5. Super Mario Odyssey

I'm being relatively strict on my genre definitions - not counting the Jak sequels despite still having plenty of platforming and not counting the 2.5D Klonoa games. Bubbling under otherwise are the Sly games, Spyro, Mario 64 and Galaxy.

I'm struggling to think of many good 3D platformers even though I know there are lots I've played so this list may change. Also the strict genre requirement does make things harder - some other Jak games and things like Ratchet would come in to play otherwise

1. Mario Odyssey
2. Mario Galaxy
3. Jak & Daxter The Precursor Legacy
4. Mario 64
5. Sonic Adventure 2 (strawberry float the haters!)

Was going to post in the 3D All Stars thread but I’ll post here instead!

1. Galaxy
2. Galaxy 2
3. Banjo Kazooie
4. Mario 64
5. Mario Odyssey

Honourable mention to Conker’s Bad Fur Day. Depending on my mood 4 and 5 could easily switch around.

I loved both Sonic Adventure games. I haven't gone back recently but they were just a hot mess

The first one was far superior, the central hub was neat, the levels were better designed (SA2's gem hunt levels were way too big), and i enjoyed the story a lot more.

Also, that Nights pinball table

Conversely I prefer pretty much everything about the second game! I enjoyed 1 but the sequel feels like it learned a lot from it and is a much more refined experience in my opinion.

Some of the Sonic and Shadow levels in 2 are sublime whereas most of what Sonic gets up to in the original feels like they hadn't really worked out how to handle him yet.

This is a bold list

Spyro 1 over the sequels? It's hard to remember which is which but I think I liked Gateway to Glimmer the most. Can't believe they renamed it for the HD trilogy :x

I just went for the first of each series. Although most of those games’ sequels added a lot, and were arguably better, it was the first in each series that had the greatest impact on me.

Sands of Time is a good shout, that was a very good game.

Surprised there hasn't been more Sly love in here, people are always banging on about that!

Sly 2 was in my list until I remembered Grow Home and didn't want to get rid of Odyssey.

All of the Sly games are great and while it obviously has the whole stealth thing going on and mini-games in the later games it probably stuck the most to being a pure 3D platformer compared to Jak and Ratchet, and it deserves respect for that.
