Since Karate Champ made itself known to me during one family holiday in Sunny Wales when I was a nipper I've been a fan of the genre ever since. Granted I'm not as good at these games as I once was (simply don't play them enough) but I do like to fire up a good fighter every now and then.

Karate Champ (Arcade)

My first fighting game and one that, thanks to the joys of emulation, I sometimes like to fire up. I don't recall getting my ass kicked quite as much though!

Double Dragon (Arcade)

For a few years this was the only reason I would attend the local fair when it turned up at my home town. Of course there were a couple of other games I enjoyed such as Supersprint and Operation Wolf, but Double Dragon gobbled up the majority of my ten penny pieces.

Final Fight (Arcade)

First stumbled upon this in an arcade at Barry Island and was immediately blown away. Beautifully drawn and brilliant to play, Final Fight has been a firm favourite ever since.

King of Fighters 98 (Arcade/Dreamcast)

I was already a fan of the KoF series by this point, but 98 is an absolute belter. Perfectly balanced while sporting an incredibly deep fighting system KoF 98 is, for my money, one of the greatest fighting games ever made. The series has introduced some cool characters and features since then but 98 remains top of the pops.

Tekken 2 (PS1)

I'd already enjoyed time playing Tekken, but when I fired up Tekken 2 for the first time my jaw hit the floor. I literally spent hours upon hours learning all those 10 strings, counters and grapple combos until not a single one of my gaming friends could touch me. Good times.

Dead or Alive Ultimate (OG Xbox)

Bouncing boobs and saucy costumes aside DOA has always been a quality fighter. For this series DOA Ultimate remains my absolute fav. As you might imagine I was gutted when the optical drive for my Xbox gave up the ghost and I lost hours of game time as a result- yes including every costume! Thankfully I've finally managed to get a fully working emulated version via CXBX-R.

BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma (PC)

Beautifully drawn and animated, a whole host of awesome and bizarre fighters to choose from, great tunes and a immensely satisfying fighting system. What's not to like?

There's plenty more, but that'll do for now to get the ball rolling. :D

Scott Pilgrim vs The World

Wonderfully playing 4-player co-op beat 'em up with top tier art and music. This is my favourite and it's a tragedy that it got delisted due to its licence expiring. I still have it installed on my PS3, but I wish it could come back and be made available once more on Switch, PS4 or PC.

Streets of Rage 2 (MegaDrive) - Wasn't a fan of beat-em-ups following a horrible experience with a dodgy cart on Double Dragon (NES), but absolutely loved playing this with friends, the soundtrack is still one of the best of all time.

Mortal Kombat 2 (SNES/MegaDrive) - Blew my mind the first time I played it, on my tiny TV this looked photo-realistic.

Tekken 3 (PlayStation) - This felt like a huge cultural event at high school when it was released, everyone was playing and talking about it. From the characters to the soundtrack the game absolutely oozed style

Virtua Fighter 3 (Arcade) - Releasing a year and a half after the Saturn/PlayStation this looked and felt like a generational leap, the graphics were absolutely mind blowing at the time and the diversity of stages (different shapes and elevations) added so much depth, this remains the peak of fighting games for me.

Smaaaaaaaaaaash Brooooooooooos.

Also Soul Calibur II on the GameCube: I loved the detailed campaign and liked the fighting mechanics, even if I tended to move-spam and never mastered Guard Impact (and I hated Ivy and Taki’s costumes. Talim MVP).

But mostly Smash. I think every Smash game apart from Ultimate has had 100h playtime poured into it, and Ultimate’s catching up. It’s primarily a fanservice exercise, and I’m well aware of that; but I do enjoy the fighting mechanics. I enjoy the chaos, especially in local multiplayer. And I enjoy the variety on offer, all the (Nintendo) characters and courses, making the replayability almost endless.

Does No More Heroes count as a beat-em-up? That was fun, although the more traditional beat-em-up segments were the worst bits.

The original Mortal Kombat. Sunk loads of hours into it trying to beat the main game with every character when I was a wee n00b.

SSBM. Loved this at the time, across all the modes I've probably exceeded 100 hours, thought haven't bothered with any subsequent versions. Seems too "more of the same".

Soul Calibur II. Weapon Master mode > You.

If we're including wrestling games then I'll chuck in a mention for WWF No Mercy. Still think it's the best wrestling game ever made.

Check out my YouTube channel!
One man should not have this much power in this game. Luckily I'm not an ordinary man.

While I did somewhat enjoy SoR 2 at the time I've never been quite as enamoured with it as some. I'd would even go as far as to say that it's hugely overrated, particularly by the more fervent Sega Megadrive fanbase.

Can't say that I'm big on fighting games or beat 'em ups, but there are a few that stand out.

Streets of Rage
You could argue it's the weakest game in the series, but it was the first one I played and it's the one I go back to the most. I used to rent it out and play it all weekend with my brother in co-op. Great times.

Tekken 3
I think this would be my favourite fighting game. The characters, music, and modes were all great, and I don't think there's been any other fighting game where I've played every mode and enjoyed them all equally.

Soul Calibur II
Had this on the Xbox, and played the hell out of it. Just a really solid game in pretty much every area.

Smash Bros Melee
The best in the series for me, of the ones I've played (haven't played Wii U or Ultimate). Every mode was great, loads to do, and I still don't think I did or unlocked everything.

Great call, Nibble! I recall chucking quite a few ten-pence pieces into it!

I've never been one for one-on-one fighting games although I do like scrolling beat 'em ups. Some of my favourites are:

Way of the Exploding Fist (C64) - Tremendous graphics and sound together with simple but exciting gameplay. Yes, it's one-on-one, but once the control complexity progressed beyond this level, I retired from playing this style of fighting game!

Bruce Lee (C64) - A legendary game where you played as Lee, battling baddies across a wide number of screens that contained great platforming challenges, too.

Ninja (C64) - It was pretty basic and very short but, as a budget multi-screen beat 'em up, most enjoyable.

My Hero (MS) - A scrolling beat 'em up that was super-tough, had flickering sprites, but was still great fun!

Golden Axe (MD) - A terrific arcade conversion that offered excellent one or two player action. The screen-filling special powers were great!

Fighting Force (PS1 / N64) - The game gained a mixed reception but I always liked the 3D brawling action.

I was actually reminded of this game by the ARPG thread, but it fits maybe better here

Gladiator Begins (PSP/Vita)

It's a fighting game, but it's also an RPG. After creating your character you start as an unknown slave, and work your way up through the rankings by choosing which battles to participate in. It actually has a branching story with various endings depending on who favours you and who you fight for. Mechanically it aims for realism and is stamina based, with your equipment and armour taking damage throughout fights and wounds carrying over between battles. Damage is limb based and different weapons all handle differently. I favour using a spear and large shield, which plays completely differently to dual wielding knives for example.

It's really good if realistic combat is your thing :toot:

Can't play them anymore but I used to love fighting games, both 1v1 fighters and side scrolling brawlers were among my favourite genres.

Some of my favourites are:

Virtua Fighter 4: Evo
Streets of Rage 2
Fighting Vipers
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Power Stone 2
Soul Calibur
Guilty Gear X2
Samurai Shodown
Tekken 3

I could list loads more.
