This is clearly a genre I need to play more of lmao

But if JRPGs count I've been playing FFVII recently and it's fantastic. Asides from that I've been into Monster Hunter for a few years and I like most of the various Mario RPG games.

For anyone that hasn't played Alpha Protocol and is now expecting to pick up a copy cheap and have a great time....don't. You won't have a great time. It's a terrible game.

I've still never actually finished Alpha Protocol but enjoyed it immensely when I did play it. Main advice if playing on PC: use a controller. K+M makes the hacking a hideous experience!

You really should, Warband is a masterpiece. Unfortunately it will also devour hundreds of hours of your life. It's a true sandbox game. It has no story other than the one you create for yourself. It has no win state or end game other than should you conquer the entire land. It's a true roleplaying game from the very beginning when you create your character and even choose where in the world to start. You could become rich from banditry or trading caravans just as validly as you might become vassal to one of the six factions. Or maybe you'll start a rebellion with a claimant to a throne, or even start your own kingdom. It's combat is realistic, deep, strategic, hard-to-master, and it pulls absolutely no punches. Your 10 hours of progress raising an army can be reduced to nothing through one poor decision, or by some particularly vindictive lord deciding to put you to the sword. It can be made easier, if you allow for loading old saves or by tweaking the damage modifiers so that you aren't as weak as any other soldier you fight alongside, but to me those crutches make the experience worse. As a nobody, dragging yourself up through the world to make your name mean something, every small victory earned, that's how the game is best played.

It's a terrible looking, jankily playing and horrendously deep game that is impossible to put down. A rare true 10/10, of the kind that inspires reviews such as these:

Nobody stops playing Mount&blade, it pulls you back in and you'll enjoy it again for a few months. After those few months you'll get bored and refuse to play the game, you'll become bored and people will ask you to come back to Mount&blade. It's a cycle that never ends, I and many others have experienced this. The only cure that would stop this cycle is Bannerlord.

I'm Cheese and I've been addicted to Mount&blade for 6 years.

Step 1 ) Create a character who is of common birth

Step 2 ) Get insulted by lord for being a commoner

Step 3 ) Spend countless days upgrading skills and raiding villages to eventually form a strong party

Step 4 ) Grind relation with the leader of said lords faction which I then join

Step 5 ) Spread rumours about the lords disloyalty so he is exiled

Step 6 ) Have also been secretly building relations with his wife and take her as my own

Step 7 ) Challenge him to battle and then capture him to keep as a prize in his castle that I now also own

10/10 best game I have ever played hands down

Don't expect much playtime, it is a very boring game.

Playing online on the PS4 (while the servers were briefly and tragically half-populated) also led to my favourite clip of me playing anything:

That does sound pretty cool. It often comes up in the Steam sale so might have to finally take the plunge.

*edit* Now on my wish list - GoG.

Grim Dawn is brilliant, not quite as polished as Diablo III but I think I prefer the setting and bleakness.

It was made by some of the Titan Quest devs and actually uses the same game engine, speaking of which, Titan Quest: Anniversary Edition is also really good.

Titan Quest is also a great game. Did they port it to console but it turned out a bit janky?

:D

Good luck, and don't be put off by the initial learning curve. The optional tutorial will teach you the basics of combat, and is definitely worth doing, but I would suggest getting a bow and a horse from the beginning so you can concentrate on ordering your troops around and picking off the enemy, rather than jumping head-first into the melee and getting KO'd (which will make you lose troops and probably battles). The options you pick for your character's background will affect both your starting stats and your starting equipment, so be aware of that. Also in your first game I would recommend making yourself of noble birth, it makes relations with other lords and kings considerably easier (as otherwise you have to earn your banner). Pick a male character too, women are also discriminated against. The opening quest when you start a new game also acts as a tutorial and gets you going with a handful of troops and some money, so is definitely worth doing.

Like I said you can tweak the difficulty quite a lot, but I think it's worth having things manual and learning the mechanics.

I continue to enjoy Kingdom Come Deliverance on and off so am okay with the learning curve that this will present*.

On reading more about the game what I found particularly interesting was the extra challenge playing a female role brings given that the game adopts the sexist attitude of the time. That's something I'll definitely try at a later date.

Thanks for the tips, they'll definitely come in handy.

*Strange to me that I had to reduce the difficulty in Resident Evil 2 to truly enjoy it, but am happy with the tough challenges presented in games like KCD and Warband. I guess my brain is just wired differently for different games!!

Right boysengirls, don't think people have talked much about some of my favourites so it's time for a list. I play a lot of these, so some gems like the Pokémons didn't make the cut.

Zelda
My top 25 games (yes I keep a list) has six Zeldas in it. Ocarina 3D, Minish Cap, Wind Waker HD, Twilight Princess, A Link Between Worlds, and of course Breath of the Wild. Granted, that's partly because I'm a Nintendo fanboy; but on the 'adventure' side of things Nintendo has nailed the formula, and variations thereon, time and again. However, I don't reeeeeeally count them as RPGs; so I'll throw them up top along with Okami (what if Zelda but Japan?) and move on.

Xenoblade
1 and 2, not Chronicles. 1 introduced me to the Xenoblade formula of giving you massive alive-feeling explorable worlds to JRPG in, and 2 refined it and prettied it up. Top JRPGs the both.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
Back when Nintendo weren't afraid to take the Bros. to different places and introduce them to all-new characters, we got this. Turn-based battling with several twists, genuinely funny dialogue, an all-new and charming cast of supporting characters, and the genuinely creepy Joke's End. Brrr. If you never played it on GBA, the 3DS remake is well worth picking up.

Muramasa: the Demon Blade
Little-known action RPG on Wii and Vita where you play as a ninja and feel like a ninja: the showy pyrotechnics type, mind, not the historically accurate kind. The 2D swordfighting just feels tremendous. Also you can slash up Japanese demons and eat dumplings. There's a story too, I think, but I struggled to follow it; but this is a rare RPG where it's all about the gameplay.

Bravely Second
Square Enix's original 3DS RPG, Bravely Default, had a solid job system, a solid battle system, and was oddly user-friendly for a 'true' JRPG. There was just one problem: the story of the game's first half was bobbins, and the gameplay of the second half was worse. (So, two then.) Enter the sequel, which cleaned that right up. Good characters and dialogue too, on top of everything. It wasn't perfect, but it's probably the best 'pure' turn-based JRPG I've played.

Paper Mario and the Thousand-Year Door
The undisputed king of JRPGs. This GameCube classic had turn-based battling with several twists, genuinely funny dialogue, an all-new and charming cast of supporting characters, and genuinely creepy sections. However, it also had a lot of entertaining riffs on the paper theme, a whodunnit on a train, a mechanic whereby you had to appeal to the crowd to power up your specials, a genuinely epic scope, a chapter where you investigate who's manipulating a wrestling ring, and - above all - boldness. A boldness to take Mario outside his comfort zone that Nintendo seemed to lose not long after. Play this at all costs: if it costs a bomb these days, that's reflective of its quality. One of my top three games ever.

Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations
Probably not what you meant, Gemini: check the actual definition for an 'adventure game'. :P

Would it surprise you to know that Wind Waker is my personal favourite Zelda game? For me it captures everything I feel a Zelda game should offer with the added bonus that sailing the high seas is wonderful fun. I love the visuals as well.

Not played an Ace Attorney game myself, but this thread is just for fun so if you feel it fits the criteria for an adventure game then so be it. :D

Not at all, I reckon you’d be in good company! It seems to be the favourite Zelda of people who value story and ‘experience’ highly in games: the expressive faces due to the graphical style, the more sympathetic(?) Ganondorf, and the sense of nautical adventure all rank with them.

Because I’m a soulless husk it’s my least favourite of the six, and wouldn’t be up there at all if the remix hadn’t brought along the Fast Sail: the empty sea, the irritating wind-changing, and the fact that at least one dungeon had been obviously cut out late on all marked it down. But it is a game that gets better the more I remember it! (And the longer since I last played it...)

Technically it is an ‘adventure game’, but I knew what you were shooting for: action-adventure etc. (Except I’ve used it primarily for RPGs, go figure.) I just felt like being (ahem) pendentic.

OoT followed by BotW are my follow up favourites, the latter of which is quite remarkable in many respects. Unfortunately my Wii U (which I've now sold on) decided it no longer recognised my external drive and refused to do anything but want to format said drive. The result? My 60+ hours in BotW were lost. :(

I'd like to buy a Switch, but until the price comes down, if it ever does, then it's not an option for me.

Ooft. :( At least that gives you an excuse to replay it all at some point in the future?

Fair enough! It justified its asking price in its phenomenal first year for me, but I suspect that if you have other consoles or (Heaven forfend) more important things than gaming to splash money on, your view might be different.

As much as I would like to revisit BotW I do have a huge amount of games on other systems and as such I can't justify the cost of a Switch due to it undoubtedly not grabbing much of my spare time for gaming.

Too many to go into detail about. This topic covers my favourite genres, pretty much. As a quick list:

Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy VII
Ocarina of Time
Majora's Mask
Dark Chronicle
Morrowind
Skyrim
Mass Effect 1-3
Xenoblade Chronicles
Fallout 3
