Chess. In any film. A lazy trope to highlight a character’s intelligence / depth. The one in Independence Day stands out for me as the most memorable but it sort of works as everything else is hammy too

Is the main character in the sci-fi/fantasy TV series actually in a mental institution this whole time?!

The big strawberry floating reset button trope. I hate it with a passion.

Once she's been made up only, though. Actually, in general I'd like American shows more if every young woman involved in them wasn't ridiculously stereotypically attractive.

Oh yeah, here's one:

Character overhears either the first or last half of a sentence (or in rarer cases, all) and gets the completely wrong impression and blows up at the speaker. But whereas five seconds of shutting your gob and listening would sort it out, we now get an eternity of, "NO, it's FINE, I KNOW what YOU MEANT so WHY NOT just GO DO THAT THEN?"

Showing the end of the movie/episode/series at the beginning and then the rest of it is showing how it got there.

It has been used effectively in the past, but it's so played out now by Tarantino wannabes.

God I remember it feeling like Battlestar Galactica had ten "TWO DAYS EARLIER" starts in a row at one point.

It's used a lot to try to show the characters double crossing each other, but when you get the full story it was part of the plan all along to infiltrate somewhere. Such twists.

British people being evil. It's not like there aren't much worse tropes to do with nationality, but this one happens so often and they usually sound like me.

Also: British-accented parent American-accented kid. Unless they now live in America/America-Expy it's ridiculous.
