Off the top of my head, my most recent-ish disappointments were Mafia 3 and Just Cause 3. Mafia 3 because upon playing it I realised I wanted a more direct sequel than I even realised, and JC3 because omfg those load times were *horrendous*.

I had a similar experience, which normally went one of several ways, either A: dying within 30 seconds of landing B: getting sniped from the top of a nearby hill C: surviving until the top 15 or so by simply never seeing another player until coming across someone with all the gear and who can drop down a massive tower in a matter of seconds. After a couple of goes at this I had not experienced a single moment of enjoyment and the whole thing can be summed up as:

I didn't actively hate it, and I can see why it's the cultural behemoth it is, but it was definitely not fun and not something I care to repeat, regardless of the game which puts a different title on it.

Trying to play anything while suffering with painful pressure sores.

Thankfully I haven't had any particularly bad ones for a while now but I have bad memories of playing Diablo 3 (at launch) while being in agonizing pain from a 5cm diameter sore on my back, kept having to pause every few minutes to adjust my position/swear/cry/avoid passing out.

Whilst I wouldn't put The Last of Us in my least fun gaming list, it's overrated and the gameplay is wank. Good story, at least.

Probably one of my old C64 games where I would have to load a game for several minutes (often more than once if it crashed), and then gave a few more minutes loading when I died (which often happened in under a minute). Queue Millhouse inserting quarters in to Waterworld arcade cabinet.

Also Nightrap. The disc would scratch and fail to load further scenes at the 45 minute mark 99% of the time. So I got to know the first 45 minutes pretty well. When it actually booted the remainder of the game it felt like I had accessed an Easter egg.

Hollow Knight. Explore using a map (which to get in the first place requires needless busy work) and work your way through every possible exit without the map updating to mark which abilities are required to get through said exit. Rinse and repeat every time you get stuck.

Player Freedom and Encouraging Exploration. Shite.

In recent memory, probably my first playthrough of Prey (2016). I came at it from a 'this is Dishonored in Space' position and it really isn't. I spent the whole 20 hour playthrough feeling severe FOMO and becoming increasingly irritated at the achronistic presentation of the side stories and the comparative underpoweredness of my character. I quit about 3 hours before the end in utter frustration.

Then I tried again, took it slow and played the thing as a sedately paced System Shock sequel. And I loved it.

But that first time...awful.

Is fomo a new trendy word?

Or is it that I have never seen it posted anywhere before?

Yeah it's not really a new term.

It's certainly something that stops me from enjoying some games, or playing others in a way that kills the fun. I absolutely hate the idea that I might be missing out on something in game, so for some reason, I always have to fully explore every inch of map, even if it means trekking in the opposite direction of where I need to be too progress the game, and it also means I hate RPG games where certain options are locked out if you don't have certain skills. What if the option I can't access is better than the ones I can? I might be getting sub optimal enjoyment out of the game, so I'd better stop playing completely, just in case.

Ah, that's what it means.

I move from game to game all the time my beaten rate is probably about 5% and 100%ing a game is likey to be 0.01%

For me it really depends. I hate RPGs that give you the opportunity to be great at everything and to see everything Take Fallout 4. The original Fallout games were role-playing games in the truest sense of the word: you played a role. You were never given enough upgrades to be good at everything and the choices you made at the start lasted for your entire game. This allowed you to play a genius bruiser, or a charming idiot, or literally a caveman. In F4 you can max out every stat and become a god-being who walks the wasteland unafraid of anything. It's a direct inversion of the Fallout experience.

Zero-sum mechanics can add to games, but only if handled well.

Assassins Creed, I don't understand how that game got a sequel let along the fifty or so that have been released so far.

And I agree with this. I just find myself in a situation where I want to have my cake and eat it too. I want games that offer meaningful choices, unique stories, consequences, and branching pathways, but I also can't bear the thought of missing out on content because of how I've played, because I know I'll likely never get round to playing through a second time to see what I missed that way.

Basically, I'm bad at being given choice, which is why I think I gravitate towards liking more linear games these days. They give me less to worry about, I don't end up feeling anxious playing them.

I hate being stuck in a route when it comes to RPGs, not because it's bad or anything like that, but I will play for hours upon hours without using ANY upgrade points, due to my indecisiveness. It can't bare to pick things and not get something else
