Spinning out from the My PS4 Life stats, where this bombshell got dropped:

d'mince pies wrote:Top 3 Games
1. Pro Evo 2017 - 391 hours
2. Pro Evo 2018 - 293 hours
3. Pro Evo 2018 demo - 190 hours. (in a demo ffs!)

It made me wonder what other demos people have played for a long time?

At a guess I would say my most played is maybe the Just Cause 2 demo, which gave you a substantial sandbox to play around in on a timer. Alternatively one of the many demo discs I had on PS2 is probably in the running - with maybe the one that came with the console, including Dark Cloud specifically, being right up there. It was another timed demo, so repeated plays let me get further into the game. I never got the full game, but I did get Dark Chronicle on release and absolutely adore it - it's one of my favourite all-time JRPGs.

Probably the Resident Evil 2 demo back in the day, don't think I've played any as many times as I did with that one.

Recently, the PES demos, they now have a rematch option so you just keep playing.

Going back...

NiGHTS: into Dreams (Saturn)
Resident Evil 2 (PS1)
Metal Gear Solid (PS1)
Metal Gear Solid 2 (PS2)
Virtua Tennis 3 (PS3/X360)

The MGS2 tanker demo got a hell of a lot of playtime back in the day.

Also whilst technically not a demo the Halo 3 multiplayer beta that came with Crackdown was also played to death.

I can’t recall the playtime exactly but the Snake Eater demo back on the 3DS was definitely over 20 hours, loved that demo event though it was just the Virtuous Mission.

I think is was the first Skate demo on 360 that I'd boot up every now and again over a 7 year period. It had a 'collapse' action which, if applied halfway through a move, would catapult your character across the map as a ragdoll. I used to try and wrack up the biggest medical bills I could.

Very cathartic.

The Future Cop: L.A.P.D., Metal Gear Solid and Ridge Racer Type 4 demos, back on the PS1. The latter had god tier intro music, which didn't make it into the final cut. :x

Edit: Also, Roll Cage!

The original metal gear solid demo from the OPM was amazing, I played it as if it was a full game.

There was also a demo of a monster truck game for the first PlayStation which was totally different to the game that eventually came out. It was a smallish open canyon type environment that you could drove around in for an unlimited amount of time and do lots of jumps. We put a massive amount of time in on that for some reason.

Edit: here it is

Strawberry-float! I *literally* (literally) was just about to post about that demo! It was terrific; great physics and "drive anywhere" gameplay. IIRC there was a time limit, though; you could only drive for one (maybe two?) minutes before the demo ended. It was brilliant fun careering over the hills and driving into the sea before the timer ran out :-) . I must have played it about forty times!

But... yeah, the actual game apparently lost much of the "drive anywhere" style and ended up being pretty dull :-( .

Played an awful lot of the Sensible World of Soccer demo on Xbox 360. Also Puyo Puyo Tetris on Switch - the full game always seems quite expensive.

I dont remember the time limit, maybe it didnt trigger unless you started a lap, or maybe it was there and i dont remember. Either way I loved it. Then i played the 10fps demo of the proper game :dread:

This reminds me of I think TOCA 2 on PS1, which I only played at a friends, but on one track you could hit a ramp and jump over the fence to get out of bounds, at which point you could drive along the beach and into the sea

I can find no video of this or reference to it online though :(

Metal Gear Solid 2 would probably have to be my most played demo - spent hours messing around on that. Shenmue 2 with OXM and MGS3 with OPS2 were massive too. The most recent ones I think would have to be Saints Row on the Xbox 360 - that pretty much sold on the novelty of it being the first next gen GTA-esque experience - and Dead Rising.

The very first time I put on the Broken Sword demo it took me about 2 hours. 'Wow, maybe they've given away the whole game!'

I loved smashing up the car in TOCA Touring Car. I remember reversing off the starting grid and repeatedly crashing into a barrier.

The Colin McRae demos always had 3 tracks if I remember, but they were completely random upon every restart.

The Resident Evil 2 demo with OPM had a timer clock on it (which remained on screen counting down). I repeatedly kept playing that to try and see how far you could actually go into the police station (can it actually be properly completed?).

In hindsight it's amazing how often these ridiculously short demos (sometimes they'd last literally 2 minutes or cut out after just 1 lap) would be rebooted over and over again. That's probably why so many classic games sit in the mind more than current ones, because BACK IN THE DAY you'd quite happily play it repeatedly. Think how iconic the opening of Resident Evil 2 is for example and yet that bit lasts all of 7 or 8 minutes. Dawdling. I recall Capcom changed it up as well. The first demo on the Director's Cut doesn't feature the ambulance blocking the route behind the basketball court, but on the OPM demo it's the same as in the final game. There's also two variations of the gun shop owner getting offed, depending on if you take the bullets from behind the counter or not. Leave without them and you'll hear the sounds of him being murdered outside. You can then continue on or go back in and retrieve the shotgun.

Die Hard Arcade on the Saturn is the main one that springs to mind, Must have played it hundreds of times. Sadly I never managed to find a copy of the full version in any of my local (ish) branches of GAME, EB or independent games shops.

Loved Christmas NiGHTS and the 60fps version of Ridge Racer that came with Type 4 too.

The original Amiga SWOS demo, or MGS on PS1 (which, I believe, came free with ISS '98... or was it the other way around).

Anyway, both were incredible and I wanted them both so hard.

I remember playing about 10 hours on the Metal Gear Solid 3DS demo back in the day, and I did spend quite a while on a FIFA 13 demo for my Wii U.

Hah, I thought exactly the same thing! Me and a friend played it over a couple of evenings, with the last play being where we'd decided it had to be the full game and some idiot had put it on by accident :fp:

How gutted we were when we finally went down that sewer entrance.

Can't really remember as they never typically happened on Nintendo or cartridge based systems but my girlfriend had played the skies of Arcadia demo on Dc a lot as the game is so expensive.

I do remember playing the GTA2 demo over and over on my Mum's laptop, she wasn't happy about that as we would just pick up the kill spree. Funny now as the game is free.
