I essentially cover the main gen 1 bases

Fire
Water
Grass
Electric
Normal / Flying
Fighting, rock or psychic

I then keep then all about the same level and have rough targets for each gym

16 gym 1
25 gym 2
Then 5 to 10 each gym after that depend how level goes and how easy I smash the leaders.

I usually hold on to my starter for the majority of the run (can't actually think of a playthrough where I've boxed them), and then pick up whatever I find that rounds out the team better than whoever's on the current roster.

This is mostly what I do. I try and aim for a fire, water and electric but everything else is flexible. Normally end up with either fighting, ghost, dragon, psychic or dark though.

Literally level any Pokémon to 100 and steamroll everything. No team building needed.

In all seriousness though, the newer games give you so much XP, my Grookey and Pamcham literally just steamrolled everything, it was a joke.

With Red I had (hopefully still have!) my fully levelled up Charizard, all the legendaries... and Dugtrio. For some reason I just like Dugtrio.

As time went on with the later versions, I tried including more non-legendary Pokemon and developing more intricate strategies, rather than just "who's strongest". I developed a fondess for Bellossom.

It was ludicrous how effective this strategy would be in Gen 1. The only Pokemon not weak to Psychic who could use a Super Effective move against Mewtwo is Jolteon, and even then you wouldn't get STAB. I guess you could use a Tauros and hope to exploit the Hyper Beam glitch.

Both can learn amnesia, and crits are tied to speed, so if they both came out turn 1, it's only a matter of time before Mewtwo wins.

This isn't what I meant  Sorry - I've just re read and my post doesn't read right.

The colours I referred to were the colours of the original TGC "types", of which there were six (+ "normal").

Herdanos wrote:I blame the TGC but ever since Gen I I've mostly tried to build my "main" 6 on the basis of:

1 x red i.e. fire
1 x blue i.e. water / ice
1 x green i.e. grass / bug
1 x yellow i.e. electric
1 x orange/brown i.e. rock / ground / fighting
1 x purple i.e. psychic / ghost

Then Gen II added two new types and mucked it all up

You fit the template exactly, but not for the same reasons!
1 x fire
1 x water / ice
1 x grass / bug
1 x electric
1 x rock / ground / fighting
1 x psychic / ghost

For reference, my first informed* playthrough of Blue involved (IIRC) the below team:

Blastoise
Sandslash
Victreebel
Raichu

Not sure who my fire or psychic reps were.

*My very first playthrough involved me basically only using Blastoise and skipping most trainer battles including the entire SS Anne in order to finish the game ASAP. Facepalm emoticon. I padded out my squad to tackle the Elite Four (which was very difficult) using the three legendary birds and a Machoke hastily obtained from Victory Road. I later discovered the Rare Candy cheat so assembled a team of Blastoise, Dragonite, Gengar, Pidgeot, Kabutops and Wigglytuff. I then learnt more about the whole shebang and started afresh.

Upon switching from Blue to Yellow my team was far more compliant with the above template:

Raichu (yes I evolved him  )
Venusaur
Charizard
Blastoise
Golem
Alakazam

Bit boring though.

Come Silver this was my starting team:

Typhlosion
Octillery
Jumpluff
Ampharos
Piloswine
Xatu

I could continue ad nauseum, but I won't.

No worries :slol:

All the hype about BDSP has prompted me to dive back into Sword and I'm currently levelling up my seventh and eighth teams in that game ready for runs at the League. Felt compelled to discuss Pokemon teams somewhere somehow...
