Banjo's character, plot and levels have much more personality than SM64's, that's what edges it for me.

Ah, this is one of those things where I can’t possibly come down on either side! Mario 64 was my first home console game and I have so much love for it, and on an ‘impact’ analysis it’s an easy winner; but Tom is right that it has much less character (and looks worse) than B-K. It was also easier, so I’m skewed against B-K because it was too hard when I was that age.

I suspect what might determine ‘the winner’ now is whether I find B-K’s camera as unwieldy as I did Mario’s last time I picked up 64. Bastard thing. I wanted to stove Lakitu’s head in with his own camera by the end of it.

Anyway, we can all agree they’re both better than DK64, right? :shifty:

DK64 is just another drab entry in Rare's slide from being a quality developer to the one that farted out Grabbed by the Ghoulies just a few years later.

I generally dislike the "character" of BK and the way it makes story more of a thing than Mario 64. Mario gives you just enough to structure the game and says "go have fun with our fantastic worlds, controls and mechanics". Banjo is much more on the nose and I personally cannot stand all the strawberry floating grunts and squawks from the characters every 5 minutes. I also think that Banjo controls far worse than Mario which is a big drawback for a game where movement is so integral to the experience.

It does look and sound fantastic though, there's no denying that.

DK64 was when Rare jumped the 3D platformer shark.

Absolutely criminal we haven't had another 3D DK adventure, although I'd quite happily take Retro finishing their 2D trilogy.

They have to finish MP4 first. :capnscotty:

But yes, I’d love a new 3D DK game. Or indeed a new 3D Wario, or Kirby, or Yoshi game. I can’t be the only one who thinks that Kirby would be great fun to manoeuvre around 3D environments? I guess his games don’t get the budget that would be required for that though. :|

Oh, more than happy for them to finish MP4 first, I just wish they'd done DKCR3 after TF as opposed to whatever cancelled projects happened.

I think everyone would take anything from Retro at this point. It’s well over 6 years since their last game and let’s face it MP4 is at least another 2 years away. 7 / 8 years without a release from a major studio is unprecedented surely? I can’t believe more hasn’t leaked about what’s gone on there. It’s not even like any of their games are huge sellers. Though I guess given Nintendo has been funding them all this time with no output they’re reluctant to bite the hand that feeds.

DK64 > B-K > B-T > SM64

Suck it.

One man should not have this much power in this game. Luckily I'm not an ordinary man.

Replaying a few older titles on lockdown has upended my list a little bit. Some of them just aren't as good as I remember.

1. Secret of Mana (SNES)
2. Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii)
3. SSX3 (GameCube)
4. WipEout Pure (PSP)
5. Okami HD (PS3)
6. Jet Set Radio (Dreamcast)
7. Alex Kidd in Miracle World (Master System)
8. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS1)
9. Perfect Dark (N64)
10. Final Fantasy VIII (PS1)
11. Fable 2 (360)
12. Locoroco (PSP)
13. Phantasy Star Online (GameCube)
14. Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64)
15: Assassin's Creed 2 (PS3)
16: Forza Horizon 1 (360)
17. Pokemon Go (iOS)
18. Zillion (Master System)
19. Soleil (Mega Drive)
20. Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (PS3)
