Ports are good. As many games as possible should be available to as many people as possible.

I agree with this. Capcom get a lot of gooseberry fool for porting Resident Evil to every console under the sun but IMO it’s not a problem, just means a wider potential audience for the game.

I like this in theory, but I can’t help feeling that each and every port takes some resources off a new game, unless the work is entirely handled by a specialist porting studio. Also it sometimes feels like Nintendo is happy to put out a port for its big release of the month, which feels like padding the schedule a bit - but which, I suppose, is #betterthannothing.

I’m also bitter because the Switch has got a single game that wasn’t a last-gen-or-earlier port from Capcom. WHERE’S AA7 GOSH DARN IT

Nintendo put out ports when they have nothing else. Stuff like NSMBU they sat on for awhile until there was a gap in the schedule that needed filling.

I don't think games today are necessarily easier ("the Dark Souls of x" is its own subgenre now!) but they present difficulty differently for sure.

@Pedz:   Yes, I guess my indie game hate is my contribution to this thread!

I kind of like hearing about indie development - you know, how people approach level design, is there any interesting tech going into the game, etc. And I'll sometimes play very short experiments people make (like some of the stuff RKN has done). But 99% of the time I'm just not interested in pouring hours into an indie game, I have too many proper games to play and not enough time to play them as it is.

I like the fighting games Skullgirls and Under Night In-Birth, which both started as indie projects (though proper studios had grown around them by the time I got into them and I think that gives them a very different, more polished feel to self-proclaimed "indie" fighting games, you know, nonsense like "Fightin' Herds").

Play Indivisible, it's an Indie game sure, but it's made by the Skull Girls people.

Ports are gooseberry fool, everything should be backwards compatible so I only have to buy a game once. strawberry float ports.

I do agree though, the PC model should be standard now - buy a game once and it just works going forward. I've got a near 30 year back catalogue on PC and the vast majority of games will play fine on each subsequent PC.

Short of a major architecture change in a future generation there's really no reason that games shouldn't work across iterations of hardware and they should have improved performance by default as well!

More difficult when the hardware is integral to the game - there are examples using the dual screens of the DS, 3DS 3Dness, wii motion controls, Vita touch pads. Even some Switch specific setups would be hard to emulate, and that's quite standardised as Nintendo hardware goes.

Also would require a disc slot in the Switch. No reason why downloadable libraries couldn’t have been transferred over though.

Absolutely there will always be some curios and exceptions, but that shouldn't prevent the majority of games from "just working"

I don't mind paying for ports to Switch because of the work involved but other than that I agree, luckily platform owners/developers seem to be in agreement. I'm still fairly certain Nintendo will try and screw us over for ports of N64 and GC games though.

Ports to same gen consoles, not new ones. Resident Evil 2 from PS to Dreamcast to N64 for example. Backwards compatibility should be the standard.

Thats not so bad. Though normally 3rd larty games are developed with the other consoles in mind so its not the norm to need to port a game.from say Xbox 360 to PS3.

If Rare can rebuild Conker's Bad Fur Day from the ground up for Rare Replay, Nintendo can strawberry floating well slap a few ROMs in an emulator without bankrupting us. :capnscotty:
