As a kid, I'd usually get video games for my birthday. But not when I turned eleven, oh no. That year my parents thought I would be satisfied with the Oxford Dictionary and I've never gotten over it.

Et tu?

Ironically it's hard to find the words to sum up that present.

Wish my image sig would work

The dictionary was actually hollowed out and a game was inside, but you never opened it to find out

For my 30th birthday my parents got me nothing, and for the Christmas straight after I got a Wallace and gromit plastascine set and some LOL curry bum wipes, complete with miniature warning cone to put outisde the toilet door.

For context, the same year my parents took my sister on holiday to the USA, and bought her an expensive digital camera plus a genuine Gucci handbag.

My nan on my dad's side would buy me the exact same massive art set in a wooden box almost every year. Not exactly a bad present, but it wore thin after the first five or so. :slol:

I wonder if you can guess who was the clear favourite out of the two of us....

My dad drunkenly told me at my mum's funeral that they thought I was going to be a girl, so decorated the nursery room for a girl, bought girls baby clothes and stuff, so when I was born they hadn't even thought of a name and were strawberry floating gutted to have me. You should see the photos of mum holding me as a new born, it's basically this :|

Don't worry, they got what they wanted soon after!

Thanks for coming to my therapy session :toot:

I used to get given pretty gooseberry fool stuff for a lot of birthdays from a lot of people actually, especially when approaching my mid 20s (battery powered drum sticks that just make a generic bash sound anyone? :fp: )

I'd rather they'd not bothered really

I've mentioned in other threads the Boris Johnson birthday card I got from colleagues "because I looked like him" :dread:

I did get a giant laughing clown from my nan for Christmas 1990. The present itself was great from what I remember, future family heirloom stuff. Unfortunately my nan died on Christmas Eve before she could give it to me. My obviously devastated mum said that I needed to look after this toy because it was special, so that basically equated to never touching it. Despite the facts that my mum died nearly twenty-five years ago and I'm in my mid-thirties, there's still a toddler sized, plastic wrapped clown doll in a cupboard above my dad's bed

My nan did also get me a Donatello glove puppet that year which I did get to play with though, and my son now loves

Ad’s got the thread sewn up I think. :dread:

For me, it was a DVD from my dad I more or less bought myself for my 16th birthday, on the year he was too busy seeing his mistress in England to get back to Scotland in time to visit.

I was once given a box of tea bags as a present. Just a regular box of PG tips.

When I was 7 I was given a bookmark with a bible verse on it. It was old fashioned and an ugly brown colour. It was hideous.

A girlfriend once got be this sort of sweet/chocolate bundle. She'd asked me what I wanted previously and I said I didn't really know, perhaps a particular magazine subscription but wasn't that fussed.

When I got it I sort of looked at it, looking inside to see if there was anything else, but that wasn't. What made it a bad present was that I was trying to lose weight at the time, and she said actually maybe it wasn't the best thing to get you considering you're trying to lose weight. I'm sure I've received objectively worse things before though.

She wasn't a bad gift giver overall the previous Christmas she had got us a trip to Florence, but hadn't planned how we were getting to Florence from Pisa Airport at midnight.

Edit: Also my sister doesn't manage to get me anything each year. She'll have thought about some kind of outing we can go on, but will never actually get around to organise it (we were supposed to go to an Alpacca farm last year). She's much better at Christmas when she buys actual objects.

Not a birthday present, but for Christmas once when I was aged 7, an Auntie got me a blank VHS tape. Think it was a cheap Maxim brand too.

Didn't turn out too bad though as I recorded Wrestlemania 8 on it.

For my first birthday that we had spent together my wife (or GF as she was then) got me a Airfix model rally car to build. I have never expressed an interest in Airfix, model building, rally cars, or anything that could have pointed her in the direction of this gift!
