Not from what I’ve seen.

And the computer comparison - you wouldn’t get something like that every Christmas. My Spectrum was a combined Christmas and birthday present, and plenty of my mates had to share theirs with siblings.

Someone I work with bought their 14-year-old a strawberry floating MacBook.

Yes, but it’s far worse now. How many kids when you were at school would have regularly been bought something of equivalent value to a smartphone?

I'm not sure that's a good example. A Game Boy Color with a game is roughly equivalent to a mediocre smartphone (£100 then, £180 today). That's in "Christmas present" range for a lot of ordinary families -- not every family of course, but I think a great deal of families, both then and now.

I think you are vastly overestimating how many kids get a brand new smartphone (or MacBook) every year.

But there were kids in the 80s and 90s who got lavish gifts every birthday and Christmas. As with todays kids, those few spoilt kids are not representative of an entire generation.

Yes, but it’s far worse now. How many kids when you were at school would have regularly been bought something of equivalent value to a smartphone? Spoilt is the norm now. If you don’t buy your child everything they demand, you’re a bad parent.

I really think this is bollocks.

I’m only saying what I’ve seen, and we are talking far from wealthy people. In one instance, it was the mother who got the hand-me-down phone, as the child got a new one.

I do sympathise with parents of teenagers, it can't be fun - do you spoil your kid by giving them a smartphone because all of their friends have them, or do you deny them that and risk them getting bullied or left out? School must be brutal these days, it was bad enough in my day if you didn't have decent football boots or a branded pencil case or whatever. I fear for my children reaching secondary-school age :dread:

There's that material issue but then also if you do give them a smartphone do you trust them with unfettered internet access and at what age? I won't go into details but we swapped our 14 year olds iPhone for a £20 tesco keypad phone for being inappropriate on the internet.

Kids have to grow up so fast now, when I used the internet at 14 I never had to worry about doxxing or snapchat or any of that shite. Plus when I got bullied at school at least when school was over I could go home and get peace, teens get tormented CONSTANTLY on their phones now by their peergroup. Like I had a phone at that age but I would only give my number to my pals, nowadays you can look up anyone by their name on snapchat or instagram or whatever and DM them abuse and this does happen I've seen it, it's wild.

My dad sent me some chocolate over from the US when I was a kid. I've never tasted chocolate so foul!

I would agree with that but I've also tried Mexican chocolate, I can't begin to describe how bad it was.

I can't imagine how bad I would have been bullied online at that age, as you said, it was only at school but these days there's almost no escape from it.

Staydead has been doing that for years. Not with 14 year olds though (I hope).

I saw this in the supermarket on the way home tonight and bought the entire supply! It may have cost thousands, but at least I know it's going to a good cause. I've helped literally millions of blind people to see again, just by buying chocolate! 8-)

I will catch up with the thread after I've finished solving the worlds problems by eating chocolate!

Edit: why does it smell funny?

The silly neighbourhood vegetable.
