Never heard of him until that bit where he locked himself in his apartment and filmed himself interacting with the cops that came to check up on him.

Then again when they found his bag a few days ago, after which I kept looking in.

I wasn't a fan of his, but this whole episode was a shame and I can only hope people take it as a lesson to take care of themselves, especially as a streamer I watch is scheduled for something crazy like 12 days straight.

Very sad to hear confirmation of it. I only watched a few of his streams, like when he played Senran Kagura, but it was clear he really loved the games he played. That part where he finds "the nut button" was amazing.

Is this chap that tweeted some homophobic stuff a wee while ago? Unfortunately that was the first I heard of. I feel for his family and friends.

edit: Yeah, it's him https://www.dailydot.com/upstream/etika ... ic-tweets/

Reading that article SoK's posted and... Yeah. That was a guy desperately in need of help.

Very sad.

Just going to C+P what I wrote elsewhere:

He was a very famous gaming youtuber, mostly for his Nintendo stuff and his reaction videos to Nintendo directs. I've never been a watcher of his videos (seen a lot of clips though) but he is very well known across the smash bros scene so my timeline is currently full of people talking about his suicide. It's been public knowledge since last year that he has been having some serious issues but a lot of people made jokes about it and claimed he was doing it for publicity.
Here's the thing about Etika, he acted like a complete strawberry floating madman in his videos and it got to the point where people were unable to separate the personality (Etika) from the person (Desmond Amofah). Even after he posted his suicide note/video and disappeared five days ago people still believed he would show up safe and sound, after all, he was only detained and put into a mental institution twice this year.
Of all the tweets I've seen today I think this one captures his sadness.

Also I haven't watched the suicide note video but I didn't realise until after I had read it that this was the transcript for it.

If nothing else he will become a common case study in academic texts on internet culture in the years to come. A issue people are aware of but are not being vocal about are the private struggles and sense of loneliness felt by youtube content creators and influencer's. Etika was one such case where even though he had thousands of people who listened to every word he said he ultimately had few people he could openly talk to about his problems, especially when a lot of those people were making light of his problems. It completely screwed with his head.

He's not the first youtuber to have committed suicide but he is probably the biggest thus far.

I was there as his stream was starting to gain popularity, watched his Youtube videos, etc. So sad to see it end like this. He was always so up beat, positive and just funny. Seemed like a care free guy, but I guess the pressures of social media and his past got to him. I read his final note and watched his final video, presumably while he was walking to the bridge. Powerful stuff.

I know these petitions never really amount to anything, but I'd love to see his Youtube channel restored: http://chng.it/CnWMHqbpHP

Couple days on and I still can't believe it. It's strange to feel so effected by someone I didn't even know.

I will say one more thing about his passing. That petition people are doing to try and get him buried in front of YouTube HQ because of that video he made saying that's what he wanted is part of the problem, as is people putting things like "No Bitch Ni**a's" signs in his memorial on Manhattan Bridge.
Even after his death people are not separating the person from the personality. Etika was a character who lived a life of memes and fun stupidity, he wanted those things because that was the character. Did Desmond Amofah want to be buried in front of youtube HQ with a tomb stone that said "No Bitch Ni**a's" on it? I doubt it.
I feel like that is the gist of the problem and people are choosing to ignore it, he has been dehumanised even after death. He called himself a clown in his suicide note, it was what his existence had become. More people knew him as Etika, the clownish youtube persoanlity, than Desmond Amofah and that is going to continue to be a trend even after his death.

And that is why no one is going to learn anything from this, and why it will likely happen again to someone else in the future.

While this is absolutely a deeply upsetting situation, I have to comment on this being one of the best Thread Title + OP Username combos I've ever seen.
