Hearing Jawa's exploits has made me realise that I really need to get back to this - I think I probably put about 30 hours into it and then got distracted!

I basically spunked most of my upgrades into my Battle Axe which has served me very well up to now - it deals a lot of damage and seems to be great for staggering enemies and breaking their defense when they are blocking. I'll probably find out that I've strawberry floated myself over good and proper and the axe is shite for the rest of the game now!

Either way he's far enough in that he can potentially pick a decent-ish weapon and start upgrading it a little. More damage on the Gargoyles will definitely help as he wasn't doing much with his axe.

+1 for Black Knight Sword, I struck lucky and got one very early (it did involve some pre fix Bottomless Box chicanery to summon in Undead Burg) and once I was strong enough to use it I don’t think I used anything else beside bows.

Yeah I got lucky and it dropped quite early on. So just pumped souls in to the stats I needed to actually use it and it's been a machine since then. Currently got it +2 so it made quick work of the Gargoyles and Capra Demon.

I think they ruined it a little in DS2 as you needed a few points in Faith if memory serves so I never used it.

Would fit in perfectly with Jawas build then!

Jawa has the Halberd btw and I used that for effectively the whole game. Scales well and its actually a very good teaching weapon too as if you miss an attack you recover quite slowly. Really helped make me learn to be more patient and precise. But it depends on what he feels comfortable using. (actually that reminds me of a bug bear I have with these games is that you have to put a lot of time into grinding just to be able to try out weapons)

The Bell Gargoyles are right banana splits. I've never bought into the idea they are meant to teach you to fight multiple enemies at once because well, you have already fought groups. The other famous 2 creature boss fight is far faaaaaaaaaar better designed. It is a complete damage check boss fight though because as soon as they gang up on you your chances of winning are about 1% if you cant deal damage at a good enough rate.

The second phase of Bell Gargoyles is pretty terrible. I actually like them a lot as an individual enemy, they have a cool moveset, but the both-at-once phase really needed a better arena than the rooftop. If the roof had collapsed and you'd fallen into a bigger, more interesting (with some pillars or something) room it would be a better fight.

I always found the Gargoyle fight a little lazy as it's kind of a rehash of the Maneater battle in Demon's Souls. If you didn't play that game then for comparison imagine the Gargoyles fight only on a bridge similar but smaller to where you fight the Taurus Demon

I upgraded the halberd to plus 6, I still haven't ventured into Annor Londo, but that weapon is great. I also got an early black knight sword and boosf stats to use them both interchangeably, and ocassionally a katana or schimitar.

The drake sword is fine for a few hours but don't put any dragon scales into it because it stops scaling quickly and becomes a dead end.

I had heard about the Drake sword and I know that you gain it by repeatedly shooting at the bridge dragon's tail but, by most accounts, it's only good for a while as it can't "scale up". I don't think I'll be venturing back there to get it!

Doing a bit more investigating, it appears that everyone has alternative viewpoints on what skills should be levelled up and, in many cases, the ideas can be contradictory! I think I'll try and put my next few points into STR and DEX.

When I next play, I plan on doing a bit of souls grinding for levelling up and/or weapon upgrading at the blacksmiths. The past few sessions I've been exploring and tackling beasts and I've not kept any souls, so I've not upgraded anything for a while. So, I'll be trying to kill things, collect souls and return alive!

The beauty of this game is there is really no wrong or right way to play it. For the most part you find what works for you and stick with. I always gravitate toward a high strength high stamina tank using primarily heavy armour, swords and a shield plus the Cloranthy Ring to boost my equipment load so I can block almost anything but still move pretty fluidly. I find dabbling a little with pyromancy comes in handy too, particularly in later playthroughs.

The bonfire at the blacksmith is a great place to do some grinding. Do circuits of the church wiping everyone out then go rest to respawn. Rinse-repeat for a little while. It'd good practice for combat, especially worth practising backstabs.

Did you let the guy out of his cell in the church? If not search around for him and let him out. You'll can get something good after you do.

I think Resistance is the only stat you really need to avoid

If you are leaving both STR and DEX though, make sure you're using a weapon that scales with both. I've never really made a joint build like that, I usually go for fast, nimble DEX characters with plenty of stamina. The exception being my current first pkaythriigh if DS2, when I've gone with a STR tank and absolutely obliterating bosses with careful dodges and a heavy R2 attack.

And I didn't mind the Gargoyle fight. The DS2 one is worse (though late game enough that you can be pretty powerful, so I was able to reduce the numbers quicker). Man-eater from Demon's was probably harder too, if you attempted it earlier.

I agree that the other boss fight example is better, as it juxtaposes two different styles more, but I don't feel like the gargoyles are too bad, as long as you're patient and good at dodging. Like I said, the trick is dodging and baiting so you can get them to attack and be vulerable at the same time. Learning how to dodge past them, retreat and recharge stamina was the key for me, baiting them and keeping distance until I saw an opening to hit one. It helps if you can deal good DPS when it's just the solitary enemy at the start.

Spoilers for general Soulsborne boss talk:

It's weird, as I find the traditionally "hard" bosses of the series a little easier than what most people say. I did Fume Knight and Blue Smelter Demon and didn't have too much trouble. Fume Knight I must have died a dozen times, but it was always a stupid mistake. I actually thought it was a really enjoyable battle. The Blue Smelter Demon I beat tonight on my second go. He hits hard and delays his attacks, but not jumping the gun and being good at dodges meant DS 2's i-frames did the rest.

I found Sinh and the gank squad in the first DLC harder (I aware I'm talking about a different game here). Just like I found Maria harder than Orphan or Lawrence in BB.

Like I said before, I wonder if playing Bloodborne first has made the older games a bit easier to approach. I don't use a shield and through 100 hours on BB I got good at dodging trouble rather than blocking it. The enemies in BB are generally much quicker and much more aggressive and a lot of Dark Soul's enemies were big, slow and hard-hitting. A lot of DS 2's enemies were big armoured blokes with massive weapons.

DS3 is now my last title left in the series and obviously the only one made after BB. It'll be interesting if I find that harder seeing as the developers might have mixed things up a bit.

To be honest, having only played through each game once, I reckon the hardest boss in terms of number of attempts for me, is still Fazza Gazza. That fight made me the man I am today.

Yeah, it seems like I'm in a good spot to grind, CD. Will give it a go later :toot: .

I did help him by unlocking the door, but nothing seemed to happen. He made it sound as if he'd help me out "later".

Thanks, Parksey - I plan on levelling / upgrading a wee bit before I then return to tackling the Gargoyle(s). Hopefully I'll be a bit tougher next time!

Enjoyed a terrific session this afternoon; I grinded Souls so that I could add a point to both my Stength and Dexterity skills, and also increase my Longsword to +2 :toot: . It didn't all go to plan, though... thank you to Grum for capturing these clips  .

That last clip

You don't seem to use lock on much, I'd highly recommend it for most situations.

I've started uploading my vids from Twitch to YouTube... err, just in case anyone wants to see my "skillz".
